About Graham Rait

Although my family, (one wife, Hazel, two daughters, two sons in law, three granddaughters, one grandson and a black labrador) now live in the English Midlands I was born in Aberdeen and spent my early years in Huntly,- about 12 miles from Lumsden, and I have great affection for Scotland. I am now retired and spend time in Scotland whenever I can.

Graham Rait purchased this house in 2000

Why Graham Rait chose Lumsden

We built this property 12 years ago, to our design, and we feel that it has all the facilities that you could want in a holiday home. We consider it to be a very user-friendly house with a very welcoming atmosphere and a very safe home and environment for children.

If you need any further information read the reviews from Australia, USA, Spain and the UK or telephone me on 01536 726623

What makes this house unique

Peaceful, safe, fantastic views, within reach of so many attractions from castles, mountains, distilleries, beaches, golf, fishing, walking, climbing, skiing, restaurants, etc, etc, and Aberdeen is less than an hour away. What else could you want on a Scottish holiday.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a fabulous stay in Lumsden. 'Clayhooter' was perfect. A perfect size and layout with space for all the family to spread out. It was spotless when we arrived; Karen does a brilliant job.The snow was fun and my 11 year old nephew from Australia had a wonderful time with your sledge. It made the holiday for him as he has never seen snow before.

The very large, safe and fenced in garden was perfect for the dog.

We will certainly be in touch in the future.

A five star rating property.

Outside there is a large lawned area of garden. The property is located on a quiet road, where there are unlikely to be more than a half dozen vehicle movements a day past the house, yet it is only 250 meters from the village where there are two shops, the public house and the garage. There is a very fast sledge in the garage should conditions allow. Alford, the nearest town, is nine miles away and has the full range of shops, pubs, restaurants,a supermarket, banks, swimming pool, golf course and a very interesting and informative motor museum. Huntly, which is 12 miles north of Lumsden, is a larger town with more facilities, a very picturesque golf course and the ancient castle.

Thanks for a great holiday .

Clayhooter was exactly as depicted on line - it was spotlessly clean and well maintained with a fully equipped kitchen.

Although in a rural area, it was surprising how close we were, by car, to Aberdeen, Royal Deeside, Banff, etc to the north, and in about 2 hours, we were in Dundee. There were many walks in the nearby districts.

Unfortunately we couldn't dine at Glekindie Arms as it was closed and up for auction: however, there was Kildrummy Inn for Sunday lunch, Forbes Arms at Brig o' Alford, choice of cafes in Huntly, etc etc. Our favourite was lunch or afternoon coffee was at Kildrummy Castle Hotel, where, whether wet or fine, we were entertained by the squirrels.

We travelled from Australia and had a wonderful holiday whilst based at Clayhooter. We;ll be back!

Owner's Response: Taking up a booking in Scotland from Australia, when you have never been to the country before, is a bit of a 'blind date' but from this review the property appears to have met all their requirements. I am very pleased that they enjoyed their stay.

"Clayhooter", Lumsden, Aberdeenshire, Scotland

  • 5 of 5

"Clayhooter" was a very comfortable and immaculate home, which met all of our requirements. The setting was gorgeous and perfect for long walks, birding, close to several towns and excellent restaurants. The village was a short walk for papers and basics. Our granddaughter enjoyed the games, books and puzzles that were available for her. TV was available for us, which we enjoyed in the evenings. Neighbors friendly. We could have just stayed! Definitely would recommend "Clayhooter to our Friends.

The location was perfect for sightseeing. Many excellent castles and gardens were within a 6 to 20 mile radius.

Day Trips: The drive across the top of the Cairngorms to Inverness and on to Urquhart Castle is totally spectacular; Castle Fraser; Fyvie Castle; Huntly Castle; Ballindalloch Castle & Gardens; Kildrummy Castle Gardens, and Leith Hall Gardens. The Glenfiddich distillery in Dufftown was an interesting outing a bit farther away.

Food: Kildrummy Castle and The Glenkindie Arms. Groceries: ASDA & Tesco - Huntly and Inverurie. The Grampian Transport Museum in nearby Alford was most interesting and the fish & chips shop almost next door scored high.

relaxing retreat

  • 5 of 5

The house is clean, light and airy and yet so cozy on those dull days. Spend time in the sun room soaking in the view and watching the wildlife.

There is so much to do in the area castles (in abundance), mountains, distilleries (sample the goods!!! ) walk along the beach and then visit a charming cafe for scrummy fresh seafood. If you don't want to go far there are some lovely walks straight out of your front door

Clayhooter,on the outskirts of the village of Lumsden, has outstanding and uninterrupted views over the surrounding hills and the varied wildlife. The village has a public house, two shops,a hairdresser, garage and a children's play area. Lumsden is 32 miles from Aberdeen and its airport at Dyce and is very well placed for the many leisure and cultural activities which are available in the area. There is skiing at The Lecht ,when conditions allow, several golf courses, horse riding and pony trekking, walking or climbing either locally or in the Cairngorms, fly fishing in the renowned local rivers - the Dee, Don and Deveron or at the trout fishery in the village, and the Highland Games in the summer. The coast with its spectacular scenery, beaches and its old fishing villages is only 40 minutes away and Lumsden is set in the middle of the castle and whisky trails with famous castles such as Balmoral,Craigievar, and the distilleries at Glenfiddich,Glenfarclas, and many more all close by.

Other Activities: Castles and distilleries. Pony treking.Gardens.

Golf: Within a 20 mile radius there are 6 golf courses that cover the full range of difficulty and slightly further away there are several links courses. Visitors are made very welcome at these golf clubs but you should always check first to make sure that the course has not been pre-booked for a competion. Prices vary from about £15 upwards.

The nearest course at Alford (9 miles) is flat but interesting, Huntly (13 miles), is a mixture of hills and flat ground and is situated in beautiful countryside between the rivers Deveron and Bogie and Huntly castle. The courses at Dufftown and Lumphanon are very hilly and challenging and should only be only be played by those looking for some competion from the natural elements. Tarland is very pretty and for those wanting an easier game it is a nine hole course, although you can play round twice from different tees to make up the 18.

Ski: The Lecht Ski Centre is 20 miles from Lumsden through Strathdon and is open whenever possible when conditions allow. The Cairngorm Ski Centre is about an hour and a quarter away by car. Before setting off to either of these Centres, check on-line at Ski-Scotland to ensure that the Centres and the roads are open.
