About the property

Apartment in La Hayuela, Cantabria - Rural Location but only 10 mins to the coast, less to Comillas town.

Comfortable modern fully equipped ground floor apartment, perfectly located in the rural village of La Hayuela, nestled in the hills between Comillas & Cabezon-de-la-Sal.

The apartment comprises an entrance hall onto the Lounge/ Dining area, separate fully fitted kitchen, two bedrooms, & bathroom with excellent shower. Being on the ground floor it has its own terrace & large fully enclosed lawned garden.

Perfect for families with young & older children, couples & those who especially enjoy walking.

The village has two friendly bars, the nearest one having a bar-football table & a selection of groceries, the other offering snacks & lunchtime food. Every morning we always purchase fresh bread for our breakfast from the nearest bar...& then often stay for an "Americano" whilst there!! An evening G&T in the bar has also become a big favourite with both ourselves & our guests.

In the garden there is a "magic" shed, items stored within including buckets & spades, bats/rackets & balls, body boards, barbecue & garden chairs - all available for use by our guests.

Within minutes of leaving the apartment there are lovely views towards the Picos & over to the coast & there are many walks in & around the village, as well as further afield. Having now walked the area for some years we have prepared a number of walk "guidance notes," & these are available for use by our guests.

It is just an easy ten minute drive to the coast & its many wonderful beaches & bays, & less to the towns of Comillas & Cabezon-de-la-Sal, with their supermarkets, shops, bars & restaurants.

Within 20 minutes drive inland you find yourselves in beautiful valleys & lovely old villages, & it is just a one hour drive to the small town of Potes, nestled at the foot of the magnificent Picos de Europa mountains. As well as the beaches, Fuente De & the mountain villages of Bulnes & Tojos all merit visits.

There is plenty of visitor information, maps & guidance notes available in the apartment, & as said by many of our guests "you never run out of things to do."

About Roger & Helen

We are a couple from Derbyshire, with two adult and independent children with their own families. The apartment at La Hayuela realises a long held dream of having a holiday home. We are not a business, just an ordinary family lucky enough to have a holiday home in this beautiful part of Spain..

Why Roger & Helen chose Udías

We fell in love with "Green Spain" some years ago prior to the arrival of budget airlines, when holidaying via ferry from Plymouth. The grandeur of the scenery, the magnificence of the Picos de Europa, and the "Spanishness" always remained in our memories, and it has not changed. The apartment, on the edge of the rural village of La Hayuela, is perfectly situated for magnificent beaches & is just an hour from the picturesque town of Potes and the drama of the Picos de Europa. No discos or nightclubs here, just two "local" bars, a pharmacy and the sound of cow-bells, or cattle and/or horses being driven along the village lane to the fields. Just 30 mins from Santander airport and ferry port, 1 hour 30 mins from Bilbao airport & ferry port & less than 2 hour from Oviedo Asturias airport - all very easy motorway driving with no tolls.

What makes this apartment unique

A ground floor apartment with large fully enclosed garden, looking out towards the village bar - near enough to watch village life from the terrace, but far enough away not to be a bother. The town of Cabezon is 5 mins, Comillas & it's beach 10 mins, and the beaches of La Oyambre and San Vicente 20 minutes - all excellent for surfing. There are also many walking possibilities, some right from the door and ranging from 10 mins to, well as long as you want. The apartment is cosy, comfortable and with all the necessary amenities. There is nothing nicer after a busy day on the beach, walking and/or sightseeing than relaxed dining on the terrace, a bottle of Rioja and the feeling of being rather happy with life. We are always very reluctant to leave.

Highlights have included walks, local & to Comillas & Trasvia with lunch at the Mirador – not to be missed. Wild flowers everywhere, lookout for the orchids. Red kites also around.

Enjoyed Oyambre beach, especially fresh sardines to share at the Amarillo.

Drive up to Los Tojos was rewarded with wonderful views & sightings of golden eagles. Fuente De, spectacular scenery & sightings of mountain deer – don’t miss the chance to go.

Amio beach is wonderful..lovely sand, pebbles, rock pools & the headland is dramatic, & with peaceful fields inland.

Wow – what a fantastic place – area, village, apartment. There is something for everyone here – lovely beaches, countryside, mountains, views, villages, towns, drives, walks – the list is endless.

The apartment & garden are extremely comfortable – all the little home-from-home touches make holidaying so easy & stress free – thank you.

The kids enjoyed the surfing, body-boarding, & swimming at the beaches – Oyambre, San Vicente & Comillas.

Fuent De, Potes & Santilliana are all well worth a visit. Cabezon is a lovely town with lots of shops & the legendary “Milk Machine”.

The bar opposite is great for fresh bread daily & drinks of an evening – or a nice breakfast with coffee & cakes!

Comillas for eating out in the evening has plenty of choice.

The information & maps that are available have been invaluable & have really helped us plan our days. It’s obvious you really care about you guests & we have really appreciated it. Two weeks is not enough.

Very impressed with the apartment – soo nice to arrive at accommodation which was beautifully clean.

The garden has been perfect for the girls to play in after the beach & in the morning – the arrival of two donkeys in the field next door brought great enjoyment.

The apartment is in an excellent location – close to the beaches, walks & supermarket. We got our bread from the bar opposite every morning.

We fell in love with San Vicente – loved the beaches, frozen yogurt stall.

Everyone so friendly – there’s still so much we want to do & see, but unfortunately no time left.

Notes on accommodation: Located in small rural village, yet only 10 minutes to the coast. Outside: There is a terrace and large lawned garden. The garden is fully enclosed and therefore totally secure for young children. There is also a play area adjacent to the apartments with swings and roundabout, also for young children. Walks right from the door, magnificent views within minutes. Utility Room: Garden shed with barbecue, body boards (of various sizes), buckets & spades, garden/ beach games, garden chairs etc. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: All towels (including beach towels) and linen included in the price. The apartment will be prepared by Paulina (our lady in the village) prior to your arrival and is expected to be left in the same condition.

Beautiful place to stay in a lovely location. Iots of local information about local attractions to visit gorgeous beaches nearby. Lots of places to go off and explore. Would stay again ans reccomend. Fantastic holiday

Lovely, clean property in beautiful setting

Fantastic apartment will all you need. Very clean and well maintained and the 'magic shed' has all the essentials for hitting the beach.

The little village is very picturesque and there are some beautiful walks around the local area. The bar opposite is great for the morning bread run and essentials; unfortunately we did not have time to sample the famous 'G & Ts' on this visit.

The contact from Roger and Helen was first class and all the information they provide both before departure and in the apartment was most helpful.

Lovely property lovely setting

first impressions of the apartment were" Oooh" it's lovely"then. "ooh, it's got a garden". If my children were small again it would have been a perfect place to take them and do lots of days out. As 2 middle aged adults it was pretty good too!

First time for us in this region and it as gone on the list as a must do again, stunning scenery, lovely people and the food.....

This is perfectly situated for adventuring all over the region. We hit the coast several times and the lovely town of Comillas a few minutes away became a firm favourite. We found the weather a bit " British" but if you headed for the mountains It seemed there was adifferent weather system and so we spent 3 days exploring the Picos de Europa again highly recommended.

The bar over the road didn't disappoint either...legendary gin and tonics.......

Highly recommended excellent situation and the info from Roger and Helen the owners is great. Well stocked library, games cupboard and films for when you have no energy left after climbing mountains.

Wonderful Cantabria

After some excellent communication from the owners, we were not surprised to arrive at a lovely modern apartment in a quiet, pretty village about 5 minutes from the sea! the apartment was very clean and tidy and perfect for our requirements. We spent a week exploring the beautiful area, wonderful beaches and a lovely village , Comillas just down the road! Historical, with lots of shops and restaurants. Inland in 20 minutes and it seems like you are in the Swiss Alps!! We explored some lovely old villages, the caves and the beautiful valleys and mountains. Magnificent. It was also lovely to come back to our apartment and enjoy a beer or a Gin and Tonic across the road at a lovely friendly bar/café. They don`t measure the gin, they just pour it until you yell "That`s enough."

Great apartment

We are a family of 5 and really liked the flat. Good points- Ground floor with a garden (ramp and no steps but check with Roger for more details); well equipped kitchen; DVD's to watch and (good) books to read; beach toys in the shed- bodyboards, bats and balls, buckets & spades; quiet location; near the lovely town of Comillas; great beaches nearby; lots of info and advice provided.

You will need a car- public transport in this area is pretty thin and the beaches are too far to walk, but you would struggle or pay a lot to find a place as nice as this near the beach.

The nearest beach is Comillas (easy 10 minutes drive). San Vicente de la Barquera (20 minutes drive) has 4km of lovely golden sands and is very popular with surfers. Oyambre, the most popular beach with our guests, is situated between the two.

There are also many other beautiful beaches & coves in the area - too many to list.


Santander Airport (RyanAir from Stansted & Dublin) and Brittany Ferry terminal 47.5km.

Bilbao Airport (EasyJet from Stansted or Manchester) & Brittany Ferry terminal 142km

Asturias Airport, Oviedo (EasyJet from Stansted) 173km.

Excellent motorway connections from all, with no tolls.

Although there are occasional buses through the village we recommend having your own car.

There are many shops, restaurants and bars in nearby Comillas, Cabezon de la Sal & San Vicente de la Barquera.

La Hayuela is surrounded by lovely countryside and there are many local walks along quiet country lanes - the views are simply breathtaking. Helen & I have prepared a number of walk "guidance notes" & they are available in the apartment for use by our guests.

The Cantabrian coastline is beautiful with a good number of sandy beaches. San Vicente de la Barquera is a delightful seaside town with a castle and 4km of lovely golden sands ideal for surfers and family days out.

There is also the opportunity for horse-riding and adventure activities.

Inland Cantabria is also well worth exploring for its gorgeous scenery and pretty villages.

The mountains of the Picos de Europa are a one hour drive away with Fuente De (cable car), the mountain village of Bulnes (reached by funicular or a 3 hour hike) and the Cares Gorge all meriting a visit.

There are a number of golf courses within easy reach of the apartment, the nearest being towards Golf Rovacias (Comillas) & Oyambre beach.

It is only 5 minutes to the indoor swimming pool, fitness centre & sauna at the Golf Rovacias Hotel - day & multi-entry tickets are available.

Books, maps and full information on the area is to be found in the apartment. There are many "Visitor Book" recommendation.

Other Arrangements -

Recently retired, Roger currently has “free-time” on his hands & likes nothing more than sorting those minor (but also essential) parts of the holiday – flights/ferry, car hire, insurances, etc.

No special offers, just common sense & practical arrangements, as he has been doing for some time throughout our “travelling” years.

So, if you are keen to stay in our apartment but are not of this ilk, are too busy to sort, &/or find such details rather a bore, then please feel free to ask for his help – he would love it.
