A simple, peaceful house with stunning coastal views across neighbouring islands, located in a quiet hamlet above a secluded beach on the western side of the island. The house sleeps six: four in the main house and two in the studio flat, which is below the main house and has its own entrance and facilities. There are four terraces around the house, providing shade throughout the day. The largest terrace has cushion seats and a marble table with a shade canopy, perfect for al fresco eating. It has views across Kini bay and along the coast to the northern part of the island. There is a parking area next to the house. The nearest beach at Lotos is immediately below the house. It is quiet and sandy, secluded and shady, with safe bathing. About ten minutes’ walk away is the larger beach at Kini, a seaside village with local shops, waterfront tavernas, and cafes.

About Nigel Draper
Emma and I (Nigel) look after the house on behalf of the family. We live in the market town of Olney in Buckinghamshire. I am now retired but used to work in media production at The Open University. Emma works in the training department at Network Rail.
Nigel Draper purchased this House in 1975
Why Nigel Draper chose Kini
The house was built in the 1970s by Emma's mother, who is Greek. The views from the house are very beautiful as it looks out to the sea, the coastline and nearby islands. It faces to the west, so the sunsets can be spectacular. In recent years we have installed air conditioning in the bedrooms as well as solar panels to provide constant hot water. We have also installed wifi. Syros is a beautiful island. It has an attractive and busy main port, while the rest of the island is quiet and peaceful and is untouched by mass tourism - very unlike its noisy neighbour Mykonos!

Wonderful house. Island perfect size to explore with or without a car, we had one for half our stay. The house is in a perfect position well equipped and has a lovely feel to it. We felt very comfortable. The beaches are clean, the restaurants great and the people so friendly. All very easy. The house is very special and we would like to return in the future and pick up where we have left off. Thank you for a wonderful stay, we are very sad to leave and are waiting for our taxi to arrive to take us back to the port. Until next time.
Laid Back Charm in the Cyclades
This was the second year in a row we have stayed at Marathia. We adore the house, Kini and Syros. Tranquil, relaxed and authentic, absolutely everything about this place is heavenly. The house is a mere 5 minute walk down to the beach (a choice of two bays), with crystal clear water. Note that elderly people or very small children might find the return walk a little more difficult (it's uphill). The house has two balconies that afford glorious views and wonderful sunsets. The house itself is simple but perfectly appointed. It has a small kitchen with everything you need to prepare meals but you may choose not to cook at all as Kini has a handful of authentic tavernas, with relaxed and friendly service, great food and very reasonable prices. Ermoupouli (over the hill, either by car or the local bus which runs very reguarly) is lovely for a visit also but frankly you won't want to leave Marathia and Kini once you have installed yourself there. We found all the local people to be incredibly welcoming and kind. We think this house is one of the Greek Island's best kept secrets and are booking again for next year.
Charming and convenient
We stayed for almost 2 weeks in Nigel and Emma's top apartment. The views of the Agean are spectacular and the decor is rustic, simple and sweet. Nigel was super helpful in suggesting places to eat, hike, etc. We walked downhill to Loto beach and often took the hike over to Delphini Beach. Wonderful tavernas all over Syros. Ermoupolis was charming (Mazi restaurant is the best food and most beautiful, upscale restaurant I've ever experienced). We absolutely loved our time there. Do note that Syros does require some hearty up and down hill walking!!
Hi Leslie, many thanks for your very kind review. We are so glad that you had a great time at the house and on Syros. It's always good to get feedback on some of the places that we recommend and to hear that they are still as impressive as when we ourselves have been. Thanks for being such great guests! Nigel & Emma
we've had a wonderful time in marathia and highly recommend the house to all those looking for a comfortable, quiet place to spend their vacation. the view is absolutely breathtaking and since the kitchen also has a window to the sea, even dish washing feels like an enjoyable activity. with several balconies and terraces to chose from, you will always find a sunny/shady, windy/protected spot to sit outside and dive into the view. gorgeous!
Dear Thilo and Karin, we are so glad you enjoyed the house and your stay in Lotos/Kini. Many thanks for your great review. We hope you will return at some point in the future to relax and enjoy those beautiful views.
Beautiful views, silent and peaceful place
This is the fifth time I come to this house and I can't imagine a better place to stay in the whole island of Syros.
The views through the sea and the sunset are unforgettable, the house is always clean and prepared in time and the furniture is delicate and tasteful. The atmosphere of the house is warm and it looks like it has been made with patience, handmade works and a lot of love.
It was lovely that you were able to come again, Clea. Thanks for the great review.
A wonderful home in a charming location
Very confortable House, a beautiful location at a lovely village. We mostly enjoyed our breakfasts and dinners with stunning views to The Aegean Sea. It's localed near a small and almost private beach. There are great and conveniently close resturants where to have dinner at low price.
Thanks for the kind review, Sebastián. Thanks also for your help with the garden!
The nearest beach is immediately below the house. It is quiet and sandy, secluded and shady, with safe bathing. About 10 minutes walk away is the larger beach at Kini, a seaside village with waterfront tavernas and cafes. You can also get a boat from Kini to the island's secluded northern beaches. About ½ hour walk along the coast from Kini is the beach of Delphini. The resort of Galissas is also not far.
From the UK we recommend flying to Mykonos, from where you catch a ferry to Syros (c.40 mins). Alternatively, you can fly to Athens and then take a train or bus to the port of Piraeus and pick up a ferry to Syros – the ferry takes about 4 hours.Sitting on the deck of the ferry can be a very pleasant way to start your holiday. The ferries are all excellent and are very reliable.
It is a ten minute walk to Kini, which has local shops, tavernas and cafes, with a bus service to the island capital of Ermoupolis (about 20 minutes), from where buses serve most of the island villages and beaches. Taxis are plentiful and very reasonably priced. If you want to travel around more, it is best to hire a small car or motor bike. Arrangements can be made for guests to be collected from the port or airport by taxi. Car hire can be arranged.
The ‘capital’ of the Cyclades, Syros was once the wealthiest and most important trading centre in the Aegean. Unique in having a large Roman Catholic population, it still retains much of its former grandeur in the form of classical town houses and 19th Century buildings. At the heart of town is the magnificent Miaoulis Square with its imposing town hall, and there is even an opera house. Ermoupolis has lots of shops and a busy harbour lined with waterfront cafes and tavernas offering an exciting and vibrant evening atmosphere. There are interesting walks around the town and particularly up to the old town of Ano Syros, with its tiny houses climbing up to the hilltop cathedral. Away from the busy port, the island has lots of sandy beaches and the largely undeveloped northern part of the island has dramatic mountain scenery. There are many mountain and coastal walks around the island. In addition, Syros has regular boat services to many other islands in the Cyclades including Mykonos and Tinos and the very beautiful and historic Delos.
