About David Priestley
We came to live in France in November 2006, having dreamt of doing so for many years. We were lucky enough to be able to take early retirement, having both held pretty busy stressful jobs and so we came to this area having taken our holidays in France for many years. We knew the area a little from those holidays - we loved La Rochelle and the islands for example - and so chose to move here for a variety of reasons, not least of which was the ease of access to the UK to visit families etc. We have settled quickly into village life here and are heavily involved in several aspect of that life. We have made many good friends and feel very much part of things. We both love welcoming guests in our gite and we have made some enduring friendships in our years of running Valentine Cottage.

Why David Priestley chose Usseau
We chose this area for several reasons: ease of access to and from the UK, both by air and by sea; we knew well and loved, La Rochelle and the Atlantic Coast, which are only half an hour away; the glorious Marais Poitevin can be reached easily within 20 minutes and provides a huge variety of leisure opportunities. Still, after nine years here, we are still discovering more of it's treasures. So, we think we have the best of all worlds; we live in a tiny village with all the tranquility we sought, and yet are within easy reach of towns, the coast and the Marais Poitevin.
What makes this Cottage unique
Our gite - Valentine Cottage - is an old traditional cottage which has nonetheless been updated to ensure it has all the equipment and other facilities needed to make your holiday comfortable and problem-free. We are both traditionalists and so we hope that what we have done in making those improvements doesn't detract from the charm and style of the place. Without exception our guests have reassured us that they have found it to be so. So, the cottage has a traditional open plan downstairs with a fully equipped kitchen and benefits from a totally new bathroom and WC upstairs. The cottage enjoys total privacy whilst being sited in our grounds. It has a walled back garden with plenty of garden furniture and guests have unrestricted access to our 10m x 5m open air swimming pool. Valentine Cottage is a strictly no-smoking property.
Pool / Spa
This is now our third Gite holiday in a row and can safely say that Valentine Cottage was by far the best we've had.
On our arrival my wife, daughter and I were greeted by David and Niky who made us feel at home from our very first meeting.
The Gite itself has everything you could wish for (assuming you're not a huge party) with the kitchen being very well equiped, large dining table and very comfortable lounge area. Both bedrooms to were more than adequate and can I also stress very very clean unlike some other places I have had the misfortune of coming accross.
The real star of this property is the swimming pool as you can probably see from the pictures. The pool area really is a sun trap and is kept very clean along with the pool itself which David covers every evening and cleans every morning and was a real joy to use (if you've got young kids though be warned as if they are anything like my 5 year old daughter, you'll have your hands full trying to get them to leave it and go indoors).
All in all a wonderfull holiday with wonderfull hosts, so much so we are going back next year.
The Atlantic coast is 30 minutes' drive away. Fabulous beaches at La Rochelle, Chatellailon-Plage, Fouras, as well as the stunning beaches on the nearby islands of Ile de Re and Ile d'Oleron, are all family-friendly and safe. The two smaller islands - Ile Madame and Ile d'Aix - provide wonderful excursions, with great walks; local historic and cultural interest and good eating.
The nearest airport is at La Rochelle, with others easily reachable at Nantes, Poitiers, Limoges and Angouleme. The channel ports of Caen and Le Havre are 5-6 hours' drive. St Malo is slightly nearer; Boulogne and Calais are 9-10 hours' drive. Car use is needed to make the most of your holiday at Valentine Cottage. The area is rural and public transport is very limited. Car hire is easily arranged from the airports.
The centre of the village, with its boulangerie/shop. bar/cafe/restaurant is a few minutes' walk. The nearest town (Mauze sur-le-Mignon), with its shops, doctors, dentists, pharmacies, supermarket and weekly markets, is an easy 10 minute drive. The historic town of Niort, with its many shops, restaurants, museums and other tourist attractions, is a 20 minute drive. The beautiful Marais Poitevin, with its many rivers, pretty river-side villages and excursions by boat, cycle or on foot, is nearby.
For those willing to explore slightly further afield, Cognac, Angouleme, Bordeaux are all easily reachable for great days out, as are the many chateaux and towns on the Loire Valley.
