About john elmer
Barbara and John Elmer prior to retirement John owned & ran a busy hardware store while Barbara owned & ran a successful holiday cottage business based mainly in Yorkshire. we both enjoyed meeting people.
john elmer purchased this Villa in 1980
Why john elmer chose Bagni di Lucca
We were very busy people and constantly in the public eye,who loved Italy and the Italians, already having friends in Pallanza., because of this we wanted our own piece of this beautiful Country. When we first saw this place it was a ruin with no acsess completely overgrown with trees and Brambles but we had the splendid view and the most wonderful feeling that it was right for us. After years of hard work we still have that feeling and love the house with all our hearts.
What makes this Villa unique
The cottage is quite a surprise when you drive or walk up the lane and see the sparkling pool with the building beyond nestling amongst the trees and gaze at the magnificent wooded slopes and the Carrara Mountains in the background where The Romans obtained their Marble and the Italians still do. The peace is all consuming and you quickly learn to relax

We have just returned from a very hot, weeks stay, at Villa Joba. What an amazing place to base yourself! The villa with it's lovely pool, allowed us to avoid the midday sun in the most pleasant way. It is in an area of the mountains with beautiful views and just the right amount of seclusion from the nearest villages. The local area is stunning, with a gorgeous river in the valley, and many small towns to explore. We watched the eagles, spotted some deer, and narrowly avoided two porcupines, whilst returning from the local restaurant. We had a hire car, and visited Lucca, Pisa, and Florence on different day trips, with no difficulty. Highly recommend the villa, and would love to go again.
Many thanks for your wonderful review, we really appreciate it.
A magical place to stay
This was our fourth time at Villa Joba - it just gets better. The swimming pool and extension have made a big difference but without detracting from the beauty and tranquility of the place. We had intended to revisit Lucca and Pisa which are only a train ride away, but the weather was very warm so we stayed put and soaked up the peace and tranquility, sitting looking out on to the fantastic views of the valley and marble mountains beyond - and making good use of the pool!
The villa is extremely well equipped, both inside and out, and you will want for nothing. The barbecue provided is excellent for cooking the local produce from Bagni di Lucca which is a lovely small and friendly town with good food shops, cafes and bars.
So if you want a truly magical place to stay then Villa Joba provides that and much more - a little bit of heaven on earth. But if you also want a base to visit the historic towns and cities, they are all easily accessible from here. We can't wait to go again.
Good property near to Bagni Di Lucca.
The villa sits in a very secluded spot with good views across the hills. Unfortunately the peace and quiet we had hoped for from the description and reviews was marred by the daily construction works to the river in the valley below. This started very early and went on all day! We used the trains at Fornoli Station to Lucca, Pisa and Florence - all worth visiting.
We are very sorry that your stay was disturbed by some local reconstruction work, the work was completed by mid September and now complete peace has been restored.
A beautiful Italian idyll!
A beautiful quiet retreat in the Italian hills of Tuscany. The villa was rustic and homely with all amenities for a wonderful stay. The pool was clean and inviting with some lovely outdoor features, such as eating areas, swing-seat, BBQ, umbrellas and sun loungers. Fantastic views of the valley and hills across the way.
We experienced some wonderful local wildlife; such as fireflies and lizards and a locust. The odd very harmless snake whizzed by as we were relaxing by the pool!
The villa is located in an ideal spot from the point of view of sightseeing. We caught the train into Florence. Easy to do and better than the hassle of driving and parking. Also it gave us an opportunity see the sights of Italy from the lofty heights of a double-decker train. Inexpensive also. Florence was just wonderful.
Bagni di Lucca is a gorgeous small town with lots of history and a good local supermarket and information centre. Very pretty and nearby to the villa.
We loved it all. The villa and grounds was private and pretty. Would recommend to anyone.
I spent a delightful week at Villajoba, Bagni de Lucca. The property was very clean and beautifully maintained. The furniture was of a high standard and the bed I had was very comfortable indeed. The views from the villa are spectacular. The grounds are well tended and it was lovely to sit out and appreciate the views. I was lucky enough to see 3 eagles flying high above the trees, hear a cuckoo and watch the lizards darting about the garden. There are many local bars which it was a pleasure to visit and I enjoyed excellent meals at three restaurants nearby. I enjoyed walking up the quite steep road to the villa but a 4 wheel drive is provided with the property for those not quite so energetic. I would recommend this property to anyone.
Many thanks we are so pleased that you enjoyed your stay. Thank you for your delightful and informative revue.
Barbara and John.
Villa Joba Heaven
If you want to be alone, quiet, communing with nature - enjoying birdsong (eagles included) come here. If you want a mix of peace halfway up a mountain with a lovely pool but also enjoy the local bars restaurants and local friendly people, come here. If you seek a base central for the many delightful villages and cities of Tuscany, come here. The property is spotless and lacks nothing. John and Barbara seem to have thought of everything. Our hosts are friendly and knowledgeable about the area. The tuition needed to attempt the ascent up and down the private road is patient and exciting. This house has been built with love and it shows in every respect. We particularly liked eating breakfast on the patio, barbecuing the excellent local produce in the evenings and making 7 days feel both like an eternity in a delightful place but at the same time far too short. Honeymooners and families, or jaded businessmen and women all love this haven. There is good railroad access from Bagni di Lucca to the Tuscan cities and as far as Rome should that be your choice, so no need to drive every day.
The coastal resorts of Viareggio and Versilia are less than an hour's drive away.
The nearest airport is Pisa a 45 min drive away. Pisa is served by low-cost carriers Ryanair, Jet 2, Thomsonfly, 1st Choice, Easyjet as well as BA . They offer flights from Gatwick, Stanstead, Manchester, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Leeds/Bradford, Liverpool, Newcastle, Coventry, Bournemouth, Bristol and East Midlands. Ryanair also fly from Brussels, Eindhoven, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Barcelona and Sardinia to Pisa. There is also an airport in Florence which offers more destinations but it's a longer drive.
The villa’s location provides easy access to the local medieval villages and National Parks. The nearest town is the spa town of Bagni Di Lucca, and the impressive walled City of Lucca is only a 30 min drive away. The A1/A2 motorways provide easy access to Pisa (1 hour), Florence (1.5 hours) and the city of Siena, town of San Gimignano and the Chianti region (2.0 hours). For motor sport fans the town of Maranello (the home of Ferrari) is a scenic 2.5 hour drive.
The Spa town of Bagni di Lucca is 2km from the villa. It offers many restaurants, bars, small shops and boutiques and also a supermarket. The Spa offers a variety of treatments at reasonable prices to help you relax and unwind. There is a very popular tennis club & large outdoor swimming pool. There are many local restaurants - not surprising in an area famed for it's gastronomy. The most popular with our guests has always been the Antico café Del Sonno which offers a very good choice of classic Italian and regional dishes. This is located in Bagni di Lucca. The bar and pizzeria 'I Folletti' is on the main road into Bagni di Lucca and offers a huge selection of pizzas and foccacias. The restaurant of Villa Aurora is located on the road to Casabasciana, in a rural location, they offer a large range of home made Italian dishes and during the summer you can eat outside on the terrace. One restaurant in town rated by Michelin is the Corona where it is possible to enjoy top quality cuisine served in the dining room or on the terrace overlooking the river. There is an excellent restaurant in the small town of Ponte a Moriano The Locanda di Sesto has good food at reasonable prices.
