Boa Vista is a large (222 sqm) detached villa on an 800sqm lot. Unlike many properties described rather exaggeratedly as being "in Tavira town", the villa is 6 to 10 mins walk (depending on age, agility and encumbrance) to the old Roman Bridge which is generally regarded as the centre of Tavira old town, a car is not essential. With a wrap-around marble-tiled terrace at ground floor level and a roof terrace beside the master bedroom, it offers panoramic views of the Algarvean hills, the river and the Roman bridge, the Moorish castle, and out to sea. It easily accommodates eight to nine guests (a cot and/or a high-chair are provided). The pool area has 8 loungers, umbrellas, etc and a child security fence -- and underwater lighting for night-time pleasure. Alfresco dining for eight is provided close to the pool and also on a shaded portion of the terrace beside the kitchen. Tables, chairs, umbrellas are also provided on another section of the terrace off the utility room and on the roof terrace (which also has some loungers). Wi-Fi internet access (100Mbps unlimited download) is included and there is a very strong mobile signal (free WiFi is also provided by the municipality at several locations around the town). Air-con (included in the rates) is provided in lounge, dining room and in all four bedrooms. The villa is equipped throughout to a very high standard. A portion of the wrap-around terrace is roofed beside the kitchen - you can eat here protected from the sun (and there is a gas BBQ) or in the air-conditioned dining room or al fresco by the pool (all three seat 8).

Quoted rates are based on a party of max eight. A ninth guest can be accommodated in camp-bed or baby cot at an additional charge of £9 per night.

Around the corner from the villa (approx 50m) you have a very upmarket gym for those who are foolish enough not to relax when on vacation -- just Google Gymnasium Tavira Facebook -- temporary membership €40 for 30 days.

Cable TV in the living room provides more channels than you are ever likely to watch (including English, French, German, Dutch, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese). Cable TV is also provided in the dining room, the master bedroom and one of the twin bedrooms.

An informal paperback library (mostly English) is at your disposal -- feel free to exchange your books for ours.

A pathway around the corner from the villa leads down to the old town. For the young and agile, it's a six minute walk but eight to ten minutes for the relaxed or older folk. Coming back is uphill, many people walk down and take a €5 cab back.

The old town offers a huge variety of restaurants. There are many simple restaurants where dinner (including the house wine) can be had for €10 to €20 per head or you can opt for the stately splendour of the Pousada (the Portuguese version of the Spanish Parador) where the waiters wear dickie-bows and a bill of €100 per head is quite possible. But you've also got everything in between.

Nearby Ilha da Tavira (Tavira Island) boasts 12km of some of the finest white strands of the Algarve. It's reached by ferry from the old town or there's a cartoon train that runs across a causeway to the island. With 12km of beaches, it's never overcrowded -- and there's even a secluded nudist stretch!

The local Camara (Town Council) goes to great lengths to entertain visitors. Fairs, exhibitions, folk music and dancing, aerial displays, balloon races, a film festival -- rarely a day goes by without some event. The municipal market is also well worth a visit -- the variety of fish on offer is truly astonishing.

Tavira is surrounded by the Ria Formosa Nature Park, one of the "Seven Natural Wonders" of Portugal. Here you can go bird watching, butterfly chasing, horse riding, cycling, wandering, fishing – or just “wander lonely as a cloud” a la Wordsworth.

Half an hour's drive from Tavira you come to the Guadiana River valley, the border between those old enemies Spain and Portugal. The medieval walled towns of the valley are a sight to behold. I recommend an upriver cruise from Villa Real do Santo Antonio -- you visit several of the walled towns (my favourite is Mertola) and lunch en route is included.

The Algarve is a golfer's paradise. There are six or eight courses within half an hour's drive. The nearest course is Benamor at 5km which, even if you don't play golf, is well worth a visit for a delightful lunch! For the keen golfer, a temporary membership of a local golfing society can be arranged – this offers inexpensive club hire and huge reductions on green fees.

Informal array of pool toys, flotation aids, tennis rackets, basket ball, etc. Small pets may be accepted but only by prior arrangement. Welcome pack provided free on arrival, includes the basics so you don't have to rush out to the shops first thing. Toilet rolls, soaps, detergents, etc, also provided. Outside: The 11 x 5m (36x16ft) private pool is screened by high walls and has a child-security fence. There are umbrellas and loungers (8), etc, and a large pergola at poolside. An 8-seater table with umbrella allows for al fresco meals on the patio (another 8-place table and chairs is provided on the roofed terrace area off the kitchen). A poolside shower is provided. Eight sliding windows open onto the wrap around terrace on the ground floor. The wrap around terrace has two furnished areas overlooking the pool, one shaded. A postern gate at the rear of the property gives access to a footpath leading to the centre of the old town in 6 to 10 mins depending on age and agility! For a recent, detailed description of Tavira, Google "New York Times, The other Algarve" -- the villa looks down directly on the bridge in the main photo in this article. Utility Room: Washing machine, drier, iron/ironing board, sink, etc. Detergent provided. Additional maid service on request. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Villa cleaned, Linen/Towels changed each 6-8 days. One Beach towel per guest but you wash. Property manager on call 24/7 for emergencies. Pool cleaned weekly (and additionally, if necessary). Other: Furnished roof terrace with panoramic views.

Fantastic villa with all amenities

My wife booked this villa for eight of us six adults and two children as we had visited Trevira the year before and we thought we would take children this time. The booking process with the owner ted Mooney was no problem at all we arrived early before the Villa was ready but arranged to leave our bags around the back on the patio The cleaner would ring us when it was ready so we went into town for a drink and something to eat. She rang a couple of hours later and we returned to the villa which was spotless with some groceries and beers supplied The rooms are large and comfortable the living room is huge as is the kitchen there are quite a few balconies and seating areas on different levels the swimming pool is spotless and plenty of sun loungers and areas to eat outside . There is a fantastic view straight down to the Roman bridge which you can take in whilst drinking your gin and tonic with fresh lemon picked from the tree in the garden there is a gate by the swimming pool which you can use as a shortcut to the steps which go down to the town but with two buggies it was easier as you come out of the Villa turn right walk 200 yards and the steps start between two buildings and you can go down that way We hope to return very soon and will definitely book with Ted again.

Great location, beautiful villa

The villa is in a great location within easy walking distance of the town and its lovely restaurants and bars. The villa itself is very big with everything you could want including a welcome pack of food and drink (as well as alcohol!) toys for the pool and a really well equipped kitchen. It is really well maintained, very clean and well looked after. Ted was really helpful with providing us with local information and I would recommend paddle boarding in Cabanas with Elios - great fun. All in all a fabulous place to stay and I would highly recommend it. I hope we will be visiting again. Thank you so much for the use of your villa - what a lovely place to live in!

Wow!!!!!!!!

What a great residence. Fabulous property, Fabulous location, Fabulous views. Swimming pool was a perfect size and whilst we were there, had a water temperature of around 28 deg C. The view over the town and out to sea is fantastic. It's about a 10 minute amble to the centre of town with all its shops, excellent restaurant's, and music shows of all genres. A 15 minute amble takes you to the ferry or water taxi that takes you to the nearest beach. Do you need a car? Probably, if only to see the surrounding countryside, towns, villages, attractions and other beaches. Otherwise, not really. There is air-conditioning in 3 of the 4 bedrooms and there are 3 bathrooms. All rooms are spacious. There are various terraces on which to sit, one of which is covered if you want a break from the sun. The property was spotlessly clean and everything was in excellent working order. The owner's local representative is there to meet and greet you and takes you around the property to explain what everything is and how it works. Both the number of the owner and his representative are available if needed. I would recommend this property to anyone. Pro's - see the above comments. Cons - absolutely NONE. If you want a quiet relaxing location with the ability to stroll into Town - this is it!

Excellent family villa

From the moment we arrived we were really impressed with the villa, the welcome, and bits and pieces left for us by the owner, was excellent. The property itself is a good size for 8 people, clean and very well maintained. The kids loved the pool and the town of Tavira itself was a really nice place to holiday. We'll be back.

Special interest holidays:

Tavira is surrounded by the Ria Formosa Nature Park, one of the "Seven Natural Wonders of Portugal". This is rich in flora, fauna, lepidoptera, etc, for the more academically minded. For those interested in relaxing, it offers horse-riding, cycling, just plain wandering, etc. Tavira itself offers a variety of Roman, Moorish and Crusader sites. In the Guadiana Valley, you find remains going back to Phoenician times. The Guadiana Valley (the border between Spain and Portugal) is 20km/15miles away and has several ancient walled cities well worth exploring; you can take a river-boat cruise up the river from Villa Real do Sto Antonio to visit the walled towns, it stops for lunch en route. In the hinterland, the Algarvean hills offer some wonderful scenery and wildlife and an insight into what life was like in this part of the world 100 years ago.

Coast/Beach:

Tavira is on the estuary of the River Gilao. Ilha da Tavira (Tavira Island) boasts some of the best beaches in the Algarve; it is reached by several ferries, by water taxi or (over a causeway) on a "cartoon" train beloved of young and old alike. The white strands of Ilha da Tavira stretch for ~13km (8 miles) and even include a remote nudist beach. There are bars, restaurants, massage facilities, loungers, umbrellas etc on the island at several locations.

Travel:

The nearest airport is Faro (35km/20miles/35mins) but Seville (2 hours drive, motorway except last 4 miles) sometimes offers an attractive alternative. Jerez and Lisbon also possible but 3 to 4 hours drive. Car is not essential - you are in Tavira town and taxis are plentiful/inexpensive by UK standards (2017 rates €4 in town, Faro airport €50 (5/6 PAX). Car and bicycle hire are available locally. The Algarve boasts excellent and inexpensive regional trains and buses and fast express buses.

Distances:

Distances from Tavira are as follows: Faro Airport) 35km, 35 mins taxi. Seville 150km/90 mins (Airport 2 hours). Lisbon, Jerez 30km/3 hours. Alcoutim, Mertola 60km, approx 1 hour. Spanish border (no formalities) 25km, 20 mins. A commuter train serves most of the main towns along the Algarve coast at a frequency of approx once per hour. A high speed train runs Faro to Lisbon. Express buses connect Tavira with Huelva, Seville and there are regular buses to the smaller local towns.

Further Details:

Tavira has several major supermarkets such as Contintente, Mini Preço, Pingo Doçe, Lidl, Aldi. The large Tavira Gran Plaza shopping mall offers, hypermarket, boutiques, food hall, cinemas, hair and beauty salons, etc. Restaurants vary from the formal splendour of the luxurious Pousada Convento da Graca (from €50,00 per head) to simple local restaurants where dinner with wine can be had for €10 per head. Banks, ATMs, etc are within 10 mins walk. The area boasts gyms (there is a very upmarket gym at 50m from the villa), tennis, scuba diving, microlites, paragliding, horse riding, surfing, cycling, canoeing, bird-watching, hiking, trail biking, etc. During the season (June through September) the Camara (local town council) organises a wide range of entertainments - street theatre, a film festival, exhibitions, fairs, balloon races, aerial displays, concerts, folk music and dancing, etc.

The Guadiana River marks the border between Spain and Portugal. Centuries of conflict have left a series of walled towns along the river valley. Take a boat trip upriver from Villa Real do Santo Antonio (25km/15miles) to view these towns with a stop for lunch en route upriver.

Local entrepreneurs offer fishing (deep sea or inshore), boat rides, sight-seeing tours, horse-and-carriage rides, etc. Express buses connect Tavira with the shopping delights of Lisbon and Seville - the dedicated shopper can go there and back in a day. There is also an express train service to Lisbon. Train and bus fares in Portugal are extremely inexpensive by UK standards. The port of Tavira is still an important fishing centre and the local fish market displays an astonishing variety of seafood on a daily basis. Day-charter sailing can be arranged on a luxurious 42 ft yacht. You can go butterfly-chasing or bird-watching in the Ria Formosa Nature Park, enjoy the 13km of white strands on Ilha da Tavira which boasts bars, cafés, massage, loungers, umbrellas -- even a cartoon train to take you there! Or you can just relax by your own large pool.
