A total gem of a property
Right from the moment we arrived, Chris and Martin (and Ziggy) made us feel extremely welcome. The welcome basket, the property and the pool were just perfect. We couldn't have asked for better. We were able to have a totally peaceful and relaxing week with great hosts - there when we needed them but not intrusive. Thank you so much and we will definitely be back. We can highly recommend the property, the pool, the location and of course the hospitality of Chris, Martin and the lovely Ziggy. Thanks again. We feel ready to face the world again :) x
Debs - thanks - we're pleased you had such a good time and we look forward to welcoming you back ! It was a pleasure seeing people so obviously enjoying the relaxation of the holiday - and we're pleased we got the balance right in being welcoming whilst not intrusive ! Thanks again. Chris and Martin (and Ziggy !)
Beautiful location- wonderful retreat.
Gite had everything necessary for a beautiful break. Martin was a perfect host. The garden and pool exemplifies a holiday haven. We would not hesitate to re-book.
Thank you for your kind review Sharon ! We're pleased you enjoyed your stay - and that (in Chris' absence) Martin rose to the challenge of being the perfect host !
An example to others
As serial renters for over 40 years in every continent we have come across the good, the bad and the extremely ugly but our stay at La Vieille Grange was up there with the best of them.
The owners, Chris and Martin, were the perfect hosts and, just like good neighbours, were there when we needed any help (local attractions/restuarants etc.) but not intrusive when we wanted peace and quiet.
We've stayed at many properties where the mysteries of the air con/microwave/ washing machine/dishwasher etc. remained just that, but there were user guides for everything in their comprehensive guide to the gite.
The property, pool and gardens were in great condition, very clean and well maintained, we were blessed with great weather and were able to enjoy the pool with the water temperature at 25c in mid May.
We wouldn't hesitate to recommend La Vieille Grange and plan to visit again to enjoy the peace and pleasure of the region.
John - many thanks for your generous comments. We're delighted that you enjoyed your stay, the weather was kind to you - and that we succesfully balanced the welcome/advice with being discrete/invisible ! We look forward to welcoming you back. Thanks again. Chris and Martin
Just a great place to relax, enjoy the sunshine and all the lovely French food
Great to have a really good size swimming pool that you can really swim in. Relax by the pool with a really lovely view over the French countryside
Tranquil, peaceful, beautiful part of France
Lovely location with brilliant owners who could not be more helpful yet very discreet whilst living on the same site. The gite has all mod cons required for a relaxing and restful stay . If you are looking for somewhere to re-charge your batteries look no further. You can spend a lazy day by the pool or explore the Poitou-Charentes area. It's a fabulous place for doing nothing!! or doing lots.
Many thanks for taking the time to leave your very kind review. It was a pleasure welcoming you and we're delighted you enjoyed your stay - both "at home" in the gite and out and about the local area. Thanks again. Martin & Chris
Fab place to stay
From the moment we arrived we were made very welcome by Martin and Chris. There was a 'welcome pack' waiting for us with everything we needed to get us started and even a vase full of tulips, (from their beautiful garden I assume)!
The garden room, with its perfect view of the pool, garden and village beyond, is a lovely place to spend some time.
The gite is in a very good location to explore the gems of the area including La Rochelle, Bordeaux, all the small villages along the estuary and much more.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in May/June and wouldn't hesitate to return to stay at the gite if we decide to visit Mirambeau in the future.
Thanks again Martin and Chris for a wonderful holiday.

Situated in the beautiful Charente Maritime (land and sea the elements of success), but in the south of it (where the countryside is more interesting/undulating) and within easy striking distance of the Aquitaine/Gironde, including the Medoc. In the middle of the countryside (surrounded by vines and sunflowers) but within 10 mins of the Gironde Estuary (with nature reserve and new bird sanctuary) and within 30 minutes of the nearest beach.
By road : easiest is Brittany Ferries Portsmouth - St.Malo (4 hrs drive), or Portsmouth-Caen (5 hrs). Or Channel Tunnel to Calais (6½ hrs away), with autoroutes almost all the way (avoiding Paris!). By air: flights to La Rochelle, Bordeaux, Poitiers or Nantes from across the UK and Ireland including Birmingham, Bournemouth, Bristol, Cardiff, Cork, Dublin, London (x3), Manchester, Nottingham, Shannon and Southampton. By rail: Eurostar/TGV to La Rochelle, Bordeaux, Angouleme. Car is essential.
The property is in a small hamlet of about 12 houses and a farm, but within 10 minutes of the nearest small town (Mirambeau) and 20 mins of a larger one (Jonzac). Within easy striking distance are : Chatelallion Plage, La Rochelle, Ile de Ré, Ile d'Oléron, St. Jean d'Angély, Angoulême, Royan, Rochefort, Cognac, Blaye, Saintes, Niort and even Bordeaux all within 1 hour drive.
There are loads of interesting places to visit and things to do (if/when you tire of just lying around the pool during the summer!), including sleepy villages and livelier towns, beaches, chateaux/wine tasting, nature reserves, new bird sanctuary, outside activities (for those into them!) including fishing, horse riding, walking and bird watching - or just sitting outside bars watching the world go by!
Pets : one small dog may be welcome - please check with owners.
