About the property

House nr Periana, Andalucia. Rural bliss, 30 mins from Costa Del Sol,

A most beautifully renovated mill in Southern Andalucia, El Molino offers character and comfort: huge, cool reception rooms with wifi internet access, satellite tv and netflix (English/Spanish) 4 bedrooms (all with en-suite facilities, 3 with very substantial bathrooms); a large pool (11m x 5m) with numerous patios and terraces on which to eat, drink, relax or enjoy the views out to the mountains at the back or down the valley towards Lake Vinuela. Enjoy evenings outside on the patios or inside in front of the fire (in Winter!) watching Netflix in English or Spanish, Spanish tv or English satellite channels on the widescreen tv or playing one of our many board games in English or Spanish. The house is on the edge of Guaro, named after the river (stream, really) that runs in front, and near the thriving market town of Periana in the Axarquia. This is rural Spain, even if it is only 30 minutes from the beaches of Torre del Mar and 50 minutes from Malaga airport and you will enjoy watching our neighbour Rafael taking his herd of 100 goats past the front patio twice a day.

About Ross Collins

Ross and Lindsay Collins bought el Molino in 2005. The decision took about 5 minutes from our entering the house and we still regard buying it as the best thing we have done (bar 'producing' our children, Lucie and Ally, who themselves both adore the house). We are both priests, living and working in Dorset, where Lindsay is chaplain of Sherborne School. Ross is developing micro finance projects in Africa. For us, living in tied houses through work, it was important to acquire a bolthole - and somewhere we could retire to (a long way off!). We never thought, though, that we would find a place we would fall in love with and which, even now, is for all us just 'home'. Our children are perhaps even more caught up with it and Lucie, now 18, is working and studying in Madrid and 16 year old Ally pursuing his own engagement with Spanish language, culture (and football!). It is one of greatest pleasures to be able to share this magical place with guests.

Why Ross Collins chose Periana

Periana is relatively undiscovered by Southern Andalucian standards and very much retains the feel of a Spanish town. If you want fish and chips and a copy of the Daily Mail, you can pop 15 minutes down the road to Puente Don Manuel, but where we are, you are far more likely to find herds of goats crossing the road, groups of retired men sitting chatting in the square and small-holders selling peaches by the side of the road than hoards of ex-pats. The scenery is beautiful and our home nestles at the bottom of a valley with the river Guaro (a small stream in summer but you should see it in spate in the winter!) in front and 5,000 ft mountains behind. It's very quiet save for Rafael's goats trotting past twice a day and the odd farmer coming by and saying 'hola!'

What makes this villa unique

Where do we start? Our neighbours' produce coming to our door? The space inside the house? The character of the property and its sense of history? The large bedrooms and huge bathrooms? The cool of the large pool in summer? Sitting on the patio under the walnut trees reading a book looking up every so often at the mountains? Being half an hour or so from the coast and yet in another world? The sense of seeing a form of life that goes back centuries? We truly believe el Molino is a special place and we love working with our guests to ensure the house is as special for them for a week or two as it can be.

Notes on accommodation: The house is perfect for families and has hosted quite a number (including the owners'!). It is safe and secluded, and it is possible to secure many places (e.g., the main patio) so small children cannot 'escape'. There are, of course, steps in different places which one has to be careful with. The house, being so old, was built with very thick walls (about 75cm). It is excellent for the summer, keeping out the heat and for the winter, keeping the house warm. In deepest winter (pleasant though that is!), there are 2 fireplaces downstairs, 1 of which provides heating to the master bedroom suite. There are also electric radiators which can help. Outside: The swimming pool is large for a private house being at least 11m x 5m. It is surrounded by a large patio with a stone ledge for seating running around half the pool, various sunloungers etc. There is a further patio overlooking the pool with a separate balcony where the views down towards the Lake Vinuela can be enjoyed even more fully. We have had parties of over 60 people who comfortably fitted around the house. Directly in front of the house is the main patio, a large area that has the barbecue and a table and 8 chairs. This can be cordoned off. There are a number of pieces of garden around the property with walnut and apple trees, palms, flowers and so on. The house is flanked on 2 sides by streams and surrounded on 3 sides by fields which are used variously for grazing, tomatoes and olives. Utility Room: The utility room downstairs has a washing machine and tumble dryer. It is also the downstairs bathroom, with a shower, toilet and sink. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels and linen are included. The house is cleaned thoroughly between guests though cleaning mid-visit can be arranged. The pool is given attention at least twice a week.

Relaxing, rural, well equipped

Myself, 18 month old daughter and 4 family members stayed here for a week at the start of June.

The villa is incredibly comfortable, the kitchen a delight to cook in, lots of places to relax and read a book, the giant circle bath in the master bedroom was a luxury (or a swimming pool for my daughter).

The stairs are quite steep but I think this deterred my toddler from attempting them.

The set up for young children is outstanding with high chairs, baby bath and changing station all available to use.

The pool is lovely though as it was the start of the season and around 24 degrees it hadn’t quite warmed up yet but we still managed some nice swims.

In the local area we enjoyed little walks to see the agriculture and wildlife, the flora is spectacular. Wild mint and fennel grow by the stream.

We would highly recommend Cantueso restaurant on a hill through the other side of the Periana top road. Particularly good if you have vegetarians in your group - we struggled a bit for the first couple of days.

Ross has been a pleasure to communicate with and has answered all our queries promptly and in a friendly manner.

The property is situated in a beautiful place, and has all the facilities you need.

Due to a mix up over our arrival, the property was not ready for us. Sadly this mean't that we were left with ongoing and disappointing issues during our stay. However, since our return, the owner has addressed the situation and we have accepted his apologies and do believe that this house is usually, a lovely place to holiday with our experience, a 'one off mistake'. The village up the lane is very pretty and a nice (uphill!!) walk and the area is quite simply 'stunning' in every way. We felt very lucky to see traditional goat herding, and hear nightingales singing all night during our stay. It was also Orange Blossom time and Spring flowers were blooming in the fields and hedgerows. Periana, the nearest town has lovely shops, welcoming locals and all you need for self catering can be easily found there. If you want to go further and visit The Alhambra Palace in Granada, you MUST pre book tickets, otherwise you will drive a long way and be disappointed, except the drive there, avoiding the motorway is again, stunning scenery in itself. Cordoba was an easy reach and beautiful. We also had a nice day down in Nerja but were very happy to climb back up into the hills and mountains and drive back to lovely Guaro.

The owner leaves a really useful letter with lots of tips and idea's on it, which is really handy and gets you to the best shops and experiences if you don't know the area.

The property is a lovely old building, built on a slope, and as such, there were more stairs internally and externally than we had expected from the description, but we did feel 'fitter' after our holiday than before, so it turned out ok. There is plenty of seating and cutlery and crockery and all the bathrooms were well appointed with loads of hot water and ever so clean. The laundry room has everything you need, and was very useful. If you like a lot of clean 'oxygen' with your holiday, beautiful, breathtaking scenery, acres of olive groves and fruit tree's, friendly people, great walking and excellent Rioja, this is the place for you.

Comfort and relaxation in the Spanish countryside - highly recommended

We stayed at el Molino for a week at the end of August - 2 adults, plus three 'children' aged 20, 19 and 14 - and would highly recommend it. We found the mill had lots of space to accommodate us all and that the bedrooms and bathrooms were very lovely - especially the master one! It really is a home rather than a rental property and you can feel the difference. There is loads of space for sitting/lounging/eating inside and the outside table and chairs are ideally located for watching the world go by including the famous goat herd. It was our favourite sport for early evening drinks and cards and waving to the very friendly locals as they passed by. The pool is also lovely with some good chairs for further lounging!

The restaurant at the top of the hill is fab - a challenging 900m walk in the heat! - and the lovely lady who runs it was only slightly phased by our request for vegetarian paella for our daughter! Strange English people! The local town is also very friendly with some nice tapas bars and we went down to the beach at torre del mar one day which is not too far and great if you like a Spanish (rather than English) filled beach which we definitely do. All in all super-great for those seeking relaxation in the Spanish countryside - and who wouldn't! Many thanks Fiona Patrick Jamie Nick and Katie

Splendid place

We are six friends who first met as students at Edinburgh university, many years ago. We keep in touch and like to spend a holiday together when possible.

El Molino was a great find, we loved it. The house is charming and has a comfortable , relaxed feel about it. Pool is lovely too.

The weather was hot, blue skies every day. It was a delightful experience to see, first hand, country life in this beautiful part of Spain ( there is a goat farm next door).

It has a peaceful, rustic setting but you can easily make a day trip to Granada and Cordoba, through great scenery, and take in their interesting history. Or a trip to the coast, under 1 hour.

Splendid place. We had a most enjoyable week.

Excellent holiday home for families or groups looking for a peaceful break

Welcoming, comfortable home with a great pool, outdoor BBQ/ breakfast area, vine-shaded terrace with open views over rolling countryside and hills. Lots of space to relax/ cook indoors and out with good satelliteTV/wifi network. Local shops in Guaro and Periana about 10 m drive away with a large supermarket at junction of Malaga motorway (about 45m). Hill-top restaurant La Caseron is a good uphill walk but worth it for the views. Friendly, relaxing, peaceful - even has a local goat herd strolling past twice a day to graze. Housekeeper Maria-Cruz lives close by and was friendly and very helpful. Granada and La Alhambra 1hr+ hour drive - well worth it (especially if you take the mountain road and avoid the main motorway but this takes a bit longer to drive). Estupendo!

Dearest Mr Landlord

Although we were only in Spain for a few days it was our greatest pleasure to benefit from the luxuries of your spacious 'villa.'

We loved the sprawling house with its magnificant views, the carefree space to run and just to breathe in the fresy, healthy air, and the thrill of living in some remote place in the mountains.

Torre del Mar beach is about 30 mins away and is quite pleasant. A further 15 mins will take you to Nerja, a very pretty little town, with a number of very fine beaches and numerous places to eat.


Malaga airport is about 50 minutes away. Granada is a little further but that can be compensated for in the ease of getting through it. Having a car is essential and if you are not driving all the way (and many people do!), you can hire cheaply from both airports (Malaga must have about the largest range of car hire firms in Europe). We have a link with one firm and can offer 15% discount on bookings. Please ask for details.


Periana is a market town and is 3km away - it will probably be the source of most of your banking, shopping, etc.

Velez-Malaga is 20km, Malaga 50km, Granada 85km, Alhama de Granada 20km, Nerja 40km.

Further Details:

Periana has small supermarkets and a full range of restaurants, bars, bakers, a fishmonger, butchers, a bank with an autoteller, a dentist (hope you don't need this one), pharmacies and a doctors' surgery.

There is a hypermarket, Eroski, at the Centro el Ingenio at km272 of the Autovia del Mediterraneo (about 20km away), where you can select from an enormous range of food.

You will no doubt know about the joys of the Alhambra Palace in Granada, the exquisite Moorish quarter and mosque of Cordoba, the impressive cultural capital that is Seville and the imposing gorge at Ronda. You might even be looking forward to shopping and celebrity-spotting at Marbella (well, maybe not). However, there are other lesser-known joys you can experience near us; the Picasso Museum in Malaga (and the centre of Malaga is remarkably pretty), the beaches at Nerja, the hot springs at Alhama de Granada (try it in January with snow lying around you), the walks in the mountains behind the house.

Booking Notes:
Bookings can be made by e-mail below or phone at (UK) +44 7738 478 548. Reservations are for Saturday to Saturday occupancy in peak season but for any period outside of that and will be secured by a non-refundable deposit of 30%. The balance should be received by us at least 6 weeks before the start of the holiday.

Changeover Day:
Saturday to Saturday. Arrival is after 4pm and departure by 10am. However, other arrival days will be considered out of high season (June to August).

Notes on prices:
Prices are for the property per week in UK Pounds. Price includes a welcome pack including fruit and vegetable from the fields next door, wines, local ham and honey, cheese, eggs and so on. Wifi internet access is provided free of charge. A 15% car-hire discount can be arranged, if requested. Wood for the fires in winter can be purchased through the owners.
