About the property

Cottage in Thorigne En Charnie, Mayenne, Pays de Loire, France - Quiet Countryside Location with Excellent Views

Our comfortable detached cottage is perfect for a relaxing, countryside holiday in summer or winter. We have an outdoor pool for the summer and central heating & a wood burner for the winter months. We are in a quiet rural location with excellent views over open country. The house is sited within a 3.5 acre plot with over 1 acre dedicated to the gite. Whilst we are 5 minutes drive from the local shops we are just a few minutes from the main highways with easy access to Laval and Le Mans which are just half an hour away. There are many excellent local restaurants, Debra and David will be happy to give you directions to these and all the local attractions upon your arrival. The garden, pool, children's play area, summer house, patio and BBQ are for the exclusive use of our guests. If booking for Christmas a free bottle of champagne is included in your welcome pack.

About Debra Worboys

Debra and David Worboys and their two Westies (Lilly and Bela) are happy to welcome you to their home - La Bonne Marie.

David is officially retired - although he says he has never worked so hard and I (Debra) run the gite and look after several other properties for friends in the area.

We & the dogs love the outside life - which is just as well as the garden is large!!

Life here is good, we love it.

Debra Worboys purchased this cottage in 2005

Why Debra Worboys chose Thorigné-en-Charnie

We bought our house for many reasons but I guess the most important was the location. It is just 4.5 hours drive from Calais, 2.5 hours from Caen and has airports at Dinard, Rennes and Tours.

Whilst the house is in a quiet rural location we have easy access to local towns and are approximately half an hour from 2 major cities - Laval and Le Mans.

There is just so much to see and do around here - visitors that come for 1 week wish they had booked for 2.

What makes this cottage unique

We have been told by many of our guests that the photographs we have on the web site just can not do the place justice. They are impressed with the amount of space that is dedicated to the gite - the very private pool, patio area, BBQ, summer house, kids play area etc.

We have tried hard to make this a home from home and from the amount of return visitors we get we seem to have things about right. However we are always open to suggestions and improvements.

Guestbook comments from the owner

There is a visitor's book in the gite which is available to read and add comments. Some example comments from 2011: Mr and Mrs Burchill (plus Ethan and Charlotte) from Lancashire: "We have had another brilliant time, we have to say goodbye to our favourite place in the world, count down on to next year".

Mrs Barriskell from East Yorks: "What a wonderful place you have here, I could sit all week in this beautiful garden and not move. We are impressed with your attention to detail, you have thought of everything".

Mr and Mrs Gardener from Cumbria: "Came here for some R&R and that is exactly what we got. Really beautiful gite and surroundings and very comfortable with everything you need".

Notes on accommodation: The cottage is beautiful with a really homely feeling, however we do feel we should point out that it was built in 1535 and it has many very large, very old beams, a couple of the ceiling beams in the lounge are quite low so, depending on your height you may need to duck. Dogs are welcome by appointment, please call to discuss. We do not allow smoking in the cottage however there is a summer house in the garden that you can smoke in. There is a washing machine in the cottage or we can offer a laundry service of washing, drying and ironing but a charge would apply. Additional charge may apply for central heating if required in summer months (May - Sept). Outside: The secure wide open garden that goes with the gite has a paved patio area with patio furniture, a charcoal BBQ is provided. A summer house - providing shade from the sun and a cosy environment for summer evenings (or somewhere for smokers if it rains) this is a totally private area for the exclusive use of our guests. The swimming pool is an above ground pool, 5.5m across, there is a security ladder (so that the pool can be kept safe for children), plenty of toys for use in the water and the pool area is fenced. There is ample car parking for 2 -4 cars, a very short distance from the cottage. The gite is within approx. an acre of dedicated garden which is completely fenced, however the whole site is 3.5 acres. We have a children's play area which includes swings, hammock, swing ball, tyre swing, platform with a slide with a childs den underneath containing a toy box etc. There is plenty to keep the kids (and adults!) occupied without having to leave the very secure garden. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Bed Linen and towels can be provided for an extra charge of £10 per person (this covers up to a 2 week stay, change of all linen available). Other: We can provide cover for storage of bikes (including motorbikes) etc.

Great stay, it really is a home from home

  • 5 of 5

Debra and David are very helpful and welcoming, they did an Easter egg hunt for our children as we arrived on Good Friday which we all loved and was finding eggs for the rest of the holiday. La Bonne Marie is very comfortable and has everything you need for self catering accommodation and more, it felt like being at home. The outside area is great and safe for children and loads of room to run about and use of the large playground, the gardens are beautifully kept and I even spotted Owls at night! We didn’t use the pool as it was too cold (weather wise). There are plenty of sun traps to relax in with sun loungers. Again there are loads of outdoor games for adults and children. Inside the La Bonne Marie there are DVDs, English TV, loads of tourists information and an informative welcome pack. We had a great stay and would recommend it.

Wonderful Holiday

  • 5 of 5

This property has every comfort from home and more whatever age you are. The owners go out of their way to make your stay enjoyable and stress free. If you have children there are wonderful facilities if not every comfort inside and out with swimming pool. Close to places to visit and Le Mans only 30 minutes away and the roads are fantastic. Lovely town nearby, Evron with supermarket, farmers markets and restaurants. We would highly recommend this property for a stay at any time of year.

Special place that steals your heart in an instant

  • 5 of 5

As we entered the beautiful grounds of La Bonne Marie on Christmas Eve, it felt like we had stepped into a fairy tale. The grounds are breath-taking and the views really take you by surprise. We could not stop smiling and saying ”wow”! The peacefulness we felt was instant.

The very kind and generous owners, Debra and David, had thought of everything, from decorating the cottage with Christmas tree, lights and candles, with even the table laid out for our Christmas dinner, and presents wrapped up for us and our dog! We have never received such a warm welcome anywhere.

La Bonne Marie is not a holiday home, it feels like a home, and not only that, but a home with a soul. The atmosphere in the cottage is truly special, it is very romantic and cosy, and you just feel like you don’t want to leave the house at all. Every time we went out somewhere, it was so nice to come back – it almost felt like the cottage wanted to say ”welcome home, you have been missed”.

Our dog had the best Christmas of her life, we hardly saw her! She was playing in the beautiful, huge garden all day long, and her happiness was so nice to see. When we had packed up and were ready to go home, she refused to go in the car, and was standing inside the cottage with the saddest eyes ever, saying ”Please can I stay here forever”!

Thank you Debra and David for the most wonderful time, for helping us out with our car trouble (we would not have made it back home without you), for organising the vet, for our presents and all the extras, and most importantly, for giving us the spirit of Christmas which we had lost back home. This is how every holiday home business should be ran – with a big, big heart!

Absolutely fabulous

  • 5 of 5

Having gone to France to look for a new home I was lucky enough to stay at La Bonne Marie owned by Debra and David. Myself and and my 3 spaniels had the best time ever and when not house hunting we stayed put on site because everything we wanted was there for us. Debra even arranged for me to go to her Vet for my dog passport requirements for returning home. The Gite is just perfect and we topped it off with the most amazing weather ever. The Gite itself had everything I needed. It was clean, comfortable and warm, really home from home and very well furnished. The gardens which are totally private allowed the dogs to play and sleep in the sunshine for hours on end and allowed them so much freedom. The supermarket is only a short drive away but the Gite itself is so central for going anywhere really for days out. One tip I did find in the end that by actually putting La Bonne Marie and the postal code into my sat nav, it came straight up pointing at the property and took me right to the front door, which I found very handy after days of house hunting and all roads looking the same in the end.

Debra and David are 2 of the nicest people you could meet. Debra runs a tight ship and is always very friendly and helpful in fact she was so nice I was able to run past her the properties I was looking at, and the advice she gave me on buying in France was really very helpful. Nothing is too much trouble for her. David.......Well David bless him, helped me out when my car developed a problem but it was sorted in double quick time and back on the road.

I wish Debra and David all the very best at La Bonne Marie and have already recommended it to numerous friends of mine. Anyone going there will have a lovey relaxing holiday in beautiful tranquil surroundings, and I bet they spend most of their holiday at the Gite instead of going out for the day because it has everything you would want.

Thank you for a peaceful but very enjoyable stay.

Owner's Response: It was a pleasure to welcome Beth and her lovely dogs to our home and we are very pleased that they have decided to come back for a few days later in the year. Beth and her dogs are a rather special one could not see, one could not hear and the other has brain damage, it needs a special person to take these dogs on and luckily Beth steps up to the mark.

Perfect family gite in a beautiful part of France

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 2 adults, 2 children aged 9 & 6 and our lively spaniel spent a relaxing and fun week in this glorious gite. Everything has been thought of to keep the whole family entertained, including the fantastic pool and extensive gardens and play area. Lots to do and see in the surrounding area too if you can bear to tear yourself away from the gite!

Perfect, especially for families w/ small children

  • 5 of 5

We were very impressed with everything about our stay at La Bonne Marie and will definitely be coming back in the near future. The cottage is set away in a really quiet tranquil spot, yet it's only 10 minutes to the nearest town, supermarket, etc.

The property was immaculately clean and well presented upon arrival and Debra and David had very thoughtfully left us some chilled beers, wine, water and even ice lollies for the children. Everything was perfect - comfy chairs and Freeview TV in the lounge, lovely soft beds, everything you would need in the kitchen (oven, microwave, fridge, freezer box, etc).

Outside, the main reason we came and the absolute highlight for the children (and therefore us) was the playground. This has got even bigger since we booked and got slightly bigger still when David added a second slide one afternoon during our stay.

This typifies the care and attention that Debra and David obviously put into the place; one morning we were just chatting about a slight concern that the kids might be able to get into the pool area (it was already pretty safe but I was being paranoid) and by the afternoon a very professional lock (with key) had been put on to make it like Fort Knox for my 3 year old!

The owl competition was brilliant as well - finding all of the owls in the house and garden (some huge, some tiny) took up many an hour and involved us all, real good fun.

I would absolutely recommend this property to anyone, especially anyone with small children. We could easily have spent a few weeks here without leaving the cottage once, the kids loved all of the toys, the playground, the pool etc and even when it rained, dominos were provided and childrens' TV and DVDs kept them quiet.

Recommendations for around the area once you're here - the market in Evron on Thursday morning is worth a look (the big supermarket is here too), the castle in St Suzanne has some great views and the kids loved running around and climbing up and down. The creperie very close to the cottage (out of the gates and turn right) is worth a visit and the camp site in Brulon does a mean pizza!

It speaks volumes that we were asked what we'd do to improve the property and I struggled to think of anything at all - it was perfect. Perhaps if you're coming here with any intention of doing any work, the wifi isn't brilliant (provided by satellite and quite slow) but that was more of a bonus for us to force us slow down and relax for once. Superb.

Owner's Response: We are so pleased this lovely family enjoyed their holiday, it was a pleasure to have them here and we would look forward to their visit if they want to come back another time. We are always looking for ways to improve the facilities here so whilst there is currently nothing I can do about the speed of the free Wi-Fi (we are in the hands of the satellite service provider who we are stuck with as we cannot get a normal internet service at this location) I will keep an eye on any opportunities for the future. I have to say I use the Wi Fi every day and am happy with the speed; I find it is great for keeping up to date with your e mails and for research on the internet. However if you need a faster connection for work there are other possibilities nearby. We are having a great Summer with fabulous guests and lovely warm weather – long may it continue.

The nearest village is St Denis D'Orques for bread, delicatessen, petrol station, hairdresser and 2 restaurants, this is just a 5 minute drive from the house. We are just half an hour from Le Mans and Laval, 20 minutes from the market towns of Sable or Evron. All of these towns have excellent supermarkets, restaurants etc, we are happy to advise the days of the local produce markets. A full range of tourist information is available in the gite.

Further Details:

You are ideally situated to explore the Mayenne or the Sarthe regions. Le Mans is just half an hour away, it is famous for the 24 hour racing, however there are events at the track from April to October, as well as an excellent motor museum. Also you should visit the cathederal and old town as these are exceptional. There is so much to see and do in this region, there is tourist information available in the cottage but a must would include: A visit to the caves and canyons at Saulges, this is literally 5 minutes away and is an amazing place. The caves of ‘Margot’ and ‘Rochefort’ were inhabited from the Paleolithic era, tours of the caves are available from April to November. There is also the beautiful shrine to Saint Cenere at Saulge, found in a very relaxing park with sports and swimming available in the summer months, with a creperie on site serving great food and drink. Saint Suzanne is also 5 minutes from the house, this is a petite town of character with a chateau and fortress.

There is a magnificent chateau at Mezangers, the grounds are well worth a visit and a very excellent water park just outside the same village. Or you may be interested in the ancient Roman town of Jublains, with its fortress, hot baths, temple and theatre. There are many Brocantes, bric-a-brac markets and collectors fairs (full details are available). There are many churches, abbeys, parks and gardens to visit or many forest circuits to walk or cycle. You could play golf, or hire a boat in Sable to cruise the Maine or Anjou rivers. The town of Durtal is on the river Loire & has a spectacular chateau, the Anjou vineyards can be found just 4km outside of Durtal. The air is very clean in this region and as such the clear night skies offer the most excellent star gazing. We can arrange to post you information on the local area after you have confirmed your booking or let us know what interests you and we can research this before you arrive.
