Pristine apartment in 16th century building being part of Bayeux Cathedral square - unique setting

Le Guillaume is a tastefully re-furbished apartment on the second floor of a very old building, once part of the Cathedral. We purchased in 2002, and had the entire apartment internally demolished, and re-designed to make it suitable for modern living in the 21st century, yet remaining part of a stunning medieval setting. The property is not suitable for young children or the very old because it has a spiral staircase approach. It has four rooms. A living area with the original ceiling oak beams, Victorian cast iron fireplace surround, and solid wood floors. Wi Fi connection. A kitchen which is part of this living area, cleverly divided with a breakfast bar, and with features such as lowered ceiling, spotlights and hidden extractor fan. A lovely bedroom with a "corona" over the bed, the whole room decorated in pinks and white, and a blue and white shower room, available to both guests in bedroom and those using the living room. The shower room boasts an Italian walk-in shower. The apartment is superbly equipped.

We do not allow animals in the apartment.

About Dawn Petts

We are a retired couple who have been living in/visiting Normandy for many years. Jean is a French native having been born in St Lo and we met in Derbyshire in 1988. Jean has a brother and sister in Normandy. Our permanent home is in Derbyshire but we spend probably half of our time near to Bayeux. I am a retired Secondary school Head of Department and Mother to 6 boys, a family which includes 2 sets of twins and I am extremely proud of them. Jean is a widower, a retired University Lecturer, and linguist. Jean has 3 children, all successful business people. We are keen caravanners. I love my gardening, DIY, sewing and when I have time knitting too. Jean is at present learning Spanish, as we enjoy winter holidays in Spain and the Canaries. We look forward to further future travel.

Why Dawn Petts chose Bayeux

We went into the local notaire, and saw a very dull picture of the apartment. It was the location, as next door neighbour to William the Conqueror's' vast and impressive cathedral, that really made us buy it. Certainly not the appalling state it was in when we purchased! We realised that to do the job properly we would have to employ someone locally who could envisage from conception to reality exactly what could be achieved with the internal space available. This meant massive alterations, and at one point no internal walls were left standing. Parking is no problem, as just up rue de jurisdiction opposite the apartment, is a large square called place de Charles de gaulle, where parking is free, safe and shaded. On arrival it is easy to offload luggage right outside the apartment.

What makes this apartment unique

Right outside your door is the cathedral (no bells except on Sunday for services + for weddings/funerals). The area is quiet, and cobbled and picturesque. The bakers, boutiques and glorious selection of restaurants are all within a few minutes walk. Pop out first thing for your hot croissants. Stroll to view the tapestry, the various museums, the English war cemetery within easy walking distance. The supermarket E l'eclerc is 10 minutes walk away, so cooking in the lovely modern kitchen is not a problem. On days for travelling further afield try Arromanche, Deauville, Trouville, the beautiful and moving American cemetery at Omaha Beach, there is an abundance of things to do and see. The flat has lovely pink/white bedroom ideal for honeymooners,-space for 1 more in the living area.

Notes on accommodation: The property is strictly non-smoking. No animals are allowed. Property too small for families with young children. The apartment is all electric - heating, cooking and lighting. The electricity is included in the rental price. Safe, shady parking nearby. All inclusive prices include taxe de sejour. all linen for bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen, wi fi connection, telephone. Absolutely no extras. Outside: There is a small gated yard in front of the apartment building. Some work is taking place summer 2012. The newly opened MAHB museum is attached to the apartment, and the living room windows overlook the impressive glass covered entrance to the museum. As evening descends, the pastel lighting inside the museum can be viewed through the living room windows, and the newly restored ancient arches are directly opposite, also gently lit at night. The museum was opened on 23rd March 2013 and is a great collection of Neolithic through to 19th century Art. The collection has been very tastefully displayed, with a great deal of attention to detail, and notes in both French and English. Spending time in Le Guillaume is an exciting and unique experience, as we have found out fir ourselves during this March, when the Museum was opened. Utility Room: As part of the living area, there is a sliding door cupboard, behind which, is the washer - dryer machine, clothes hanger, ironing board and iron, cleaning materials, hot water tank, and fuse board All very organised and compact, for easy holiday living. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: All towels are provided, and the bed is made ready for arrivals. The extra bedding for the settee is in the bedroom wardrobe. There are tablecloth and napkins, and all kitchen linen is available. For visits of 2 weeks or more, weekly servicing available. Other: The main entrance of the apartment goes out onto a small landing, close to the spiral staircase

Next to Cathedral!

Couldn't have a better location in the lovely town of Bayeaux. The Cathedral is on one side and the sweet museum on the next with fantastic restaurants across the street and around the corner. We appreciated the easy check-in and very responsive owner. It was so special to live in the ancient building. Very nice apartment -- looking forward to returning to this apartment!

Perfect location!!!

We celebrated our son’s graduation from the US Coast Guard Academy with a trip to Normandy. Having the home of Dawn in the heart of Bayeux, at the foot of THE Cathedral made it perfect! We were located close to all the D-Day activities, walked around town, drive the coastline, discovered hidden treasures, ports and such! So much more to France than Paris!

Great Location for Exploring Nomandy Beaches

Perfect location next to my now favorite French Cathedral and short walk to William the Conqueror Tapestry and numerous good restaurants. It was well provisioned to allow for snacks and meals. Parking was fine nearby and driving to beaches was easy.

Cozy, light and well located apartment in Bayeux

We spent 6 nights in this lovely apartment in Bayeux. I was initially worried that it might be too small for three of us (3 adults), but we loved it! I can't imagine a better location in Bayeux. The apartment is clean, comfortable and full of light. The bathroom is relatively large for the size of the apartment with a great shower. It was a pleasure to deal with the owner -- she responded to any questions within hours and all arrangements went without a hitch. We would stay there again in a heartbeat.

Great Location in a Charming Apartment

This lovely one bedroom apartment was perfectly located for all the things we wanted to do in this area of Normandy. It's downtown location made for a nice walk to dinner after driving all day. There are loads of restaurants and stores within walking distance.

The apartment was fitted with everything you could need. It was a very nice stay.

Car: not necessary

Normandy is one of France's most historical regions with a fascinating past which is intrinsically linked to that of English history, and therefore also to the history of many people globally.

Bayeux was the first city liberated by the Allies in 1944 and was pivotal to the their advances in Normandy. The UK War graves site is a moving reminder of this. Bayeux is close to the D-Day beaches and of interest to all visitors. The town is well equipped for English speaking visitors. The property is within 30 minutes' drive of Omaha Beach, the US Cemetery at St Laurent, the Mulbury Harbour and the Canadian Memorial. Under one hour is the German Memorial, St. Mere-Eglise, Utah, and Pegassus Bridge. Many well documented museums harbour relics of this recent past. Because Bayeux is the only town in Normandy not obliterated by air raids and artillery many early Middle-Ages features subsist. The Cathedral is nearly a mellenium, so is the Tapestry and they are next to you. Adam and Eve's timber house is just outside your window. Bayeux and its area is full of historical interests so many of them linked with the English speaking world.


The nearest beach is Arromanches, where the Mulberry Harbour is to be found. It is a pretty beach, with a very attractive town behind it. It has small shops and many cafes and restaurants as well as WW2 museums. Omaha Beach is very large, and even in summer relatively calm and quiet. This takes about 30 minutes's drive, and again there are several restaurants along the sea front.


The train station is about a 10 minute walk away from the apartment. Not so easy with suitcases, so take a taxi from just outside the rail station. Driving from the Port of Caen takes about 1.25 hours, and from Cherbourg about 1.5 hours, at comfortable speed. Driving from Le Havre takes about 1.75 hours. The cheapest ferries comes into Boulogne (ask owners for details) and Boulogne is 4 hours drive along good autoroutes (tolls applicable).

Parking for your vehicle is within 3 minutes walk.


Main street of Bayeux: Rue St Malo : 2 minutes walk.

Bayeux Tapestry : 5 minutes walk.

British cemetery: 10 minutes walk.

Bayeux war museum: 10 minutes walk.

Omaha beach and American cemetery: 30 minutes drive.

Caen: 20 minutes drive.

Cherbourg : one hour.

Le Havre 1.5 hours.

Boulogne/Calais : 4 - 4.5 hours drive.

Further Details:

The apartment is surrounded by excellent restaurants. However, inside, you have difficulty in believing that you are living in the centre of such an old city, because all guests report the living conditons are so very tranquil and quiet.
