LAKE VIEW VILLAS - A Little history

Lake View Villas was built by a granite merchant, a Monsieur Pierre Loirat, who employed 200 people in Huelgoat in his quarries.

Before the outbreak of the second world war, he built Brest Naval Academy which was later captured by the Germans' and was where they built their massive U-boat pens. During the war the British tried to destroy them with the "Tall Boy" bombs. Ironically, German officers took over Lake View Villas during the war also. When the Germans left, the Loirats' returned to their Villa, and once again, his company rebuilt Brest Naval base and a good deal of the surrounding area. Brest Naval base and the U-boat pens are now the home of the French Navy and submarine fleet, including their nuclear aircraft carrier.

Madame Loirat worked for the Red Cross in the Villa towards the end of the war. You can see the old war chests upstairs where some of the toys are kept.

The Roman legions left Britain in 410 in order to try to defend Rome from being overrun by the Huns and other barbarians. Britain was effectively defenceless and, as well as attacks in the north and west, the real invasions were of the Angles in the east (East Riding, Lincolnshire, East Anglia) and the Saxons in the south (the south Saxons in Sussex, the east Saxons in Essex, the west Saxons in Wessex etc). In time the Angles and Saxons would occupy what became Angle-land or England. Many of the indigenous British were killed by the pagan invaders. This was what today is euphemistically called 'ethnic cleansing' on a huge scale. Those who could fled to Wales, Cornwall and the Lake District. Some of the rich British went to north-west Gaul which became Brittany, the land of the Britons.

One of the last places to hold out against the Angles was Elmet, part of the West Riding. That was not defeated until the beginning of the seventh century. Leodis or Leeds may have been the centre of Elmet. Very little is known about it.

In the ninth century it all happened again with the Viking invasions when eastern 'England' was occupied by the Danes. It was Alfred who really created a unified England after defeating the Danes.

Huelgoat is derived from the Breton words, 'Huel' (High) and 'Koat' (wood or forest) i.e. 'The High Forest' or 'The Tall Wood'. Caesar’s legions camped here during their occupation some 2000 years ago, due to its high strategic position. This is known as Camp d'Arthus. The legend of King Arthur also There was a lot of resistance to the Germans in this area by the Bretons, as you will see in the monuments to the many resistance fighters who lost their lives fighting in the woods, not to mention the tank battle between the Germans and Americans in the square by the church. There is a monument to these brave souls by the Maree's office.

"Definitely a fabulous place to choose if you want space and a really good level of comfort" Reviewed Sept 2014

“Exceeds expectations!” Reviewed 5 August 2012 for a stay in July 2012

"If you think that the description might be "too good to be true," fear not! Lake View Villas and Huelgoat exceeded our expectations in every way. The house is more beautiful than the photographs, it really is situated within easy walking distance of the hiking trails, centre-ville, and supermarket, and the owners and caretaker could not possibly be more generous and helpful. In preparation for our trip, we asked about a driving route from Paris and were answered with detailed directions for two interesting routes, illustrated with photographs. The welcome basket and amenities go far beyond the necessary in an effort to make the home truly comfortable."

Huelgoat is like a little town in a fairy tale. True to its name, La Forêt Enchantée must be peopled with fairies and moss-men who move about when no one is looking. The owners provide thoughtful information on the town itself and the many wonde

Notes on accommodation: You will be greeted by our caretaker who will ensure that you are familiar with the villa and have everything you need. This is a beautifully restored villa, with lots of space for all ages to relax and enjoy. We have left toys (in the old Red Cross chests from the last war) books, DVDs, and CDs for all ages to enjoy. Outside: Lake View Villas sits within a large private garden, perfect for relaxing, playing, eating and laughing together. The minute you arrive the children can go on the timber play frame with a slide, rope and swings. Table & chairs, barbecue, table tennis, swing-ball, badminton, boules and football facilities are all provided. If your children like playing hide and seek, they'll love this and so will you, while you have a drink in the sun and they let off steam under the giant rhododendron and camellia bushes. I have personally planted 2000 bulbs including daffodils, tulips, Crocus, Bluebells as well as sowing poppies and a number of fruit trees, including apple, plum and peach. There are benches located around the grounds to sit on along with some bird boxes to keep you occupied while you relax and take it easy. Utility Room: Washer and separate dryer. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: We provide clean linen and towels. These are changed once a week. Should you require any more, this can be arranged for a nominal charge. We provide robes for up to 6 adults in your party, along with luxury toiletries. Other: There is a pool room with a complimentary stocked bar for you to enjoy, including 1 bottle of Champagne, 2 bottles of wine, 24 bottles of lager, soft drinks for the children, along with crisps and chocolate. Also, Phone, Wi-Fi, Internet and cable TV

Cold, Damp and Smelly

  • 1 of 5

This property should not be rented out until major maintenance work has been undertaken.

When we entered the property we were hit by a wall of foistiness and it was cold and damp.

The smell infiltrated all my clean clothes which had to rewashed when we got home.

After 24 hours in the place, three phone calls, one text and an email we got the heating turned on and the lounge was 14degsC........just not acceptable in 2018

Owner's Response: Many thanks for your review and sorry you feel this way about your recent stay at Lake View Villas. We have successfully let Lake View Villas for the last 14 years. The Villa is a historic old property sat on the edge of the forest in the Parc D’Armorique looking on to the Lake. It has an earth cellar floor and stripped wooden floors throughout. So much so, that you are more aware of the environment when the weather changes. There had been some unseasonably stormy weather on our guests’ arrival. As a consequence, there was higher than normal humidity and the villa may have felt colder than it would normally at this time of year in June. There is normally no requirement for heating during this season. I did receive an email in the UK asking about the heating as it had turned chilly, but unfortunately didn’t see it until after our guests returned to the UK. My sincere apologies for me not seeing this at the time. Our caretaker lives a mere 50 yards away opposite the villa and her address and all contact details are marked clearly on our information pack that we give to our guests. Our guest’s email was received around teatime on Sunday 3rd June, a day after their arrival. Our caretaker did not receive numerous phone calls and responded the moment our guests contacted her. I received an email from our caretaker on Sunday evening, saying she had turned the heating on, so our caretaker assumed that everything was ok as did I. As for damp, the Villa was scaffolded at great expense a couple of years ago when we had cowls put on the chimneys to stop rain coming down the main chimney and onto the surface of the large granite chimney breast in the front room making it cold to touch. Unfortunately, if the rain drives in sideways, it will still come down the chimney as it did in the recent storm. It merely changes the colour of the granite to a darker shade, which soon dries out again. We have no control over the unseasonal weather and had it been its usual higher temperatures don’t believe our guests would have felt the same way. A bit of sunshine goes a long way.

Further Details:

Situated in the Parc D'Amorique, Huelgoat sits on a beautiful large lake and is well known for its spectacular scenery, woodland walks, rock formations and caves. It has many amenities, all within walking distance of the villa. They include lakeside bars and restaurants, a town square with an abundance of traditional shops, 2 supermarkets, cinema, tennis court, bicycle hire, horse riding, archery, fishing, boating and golf nearby. Huelgoat is less than an hour from both the ferry port of Roscoff and Brest Airport, while the beautiful coast of Brittany is accessible within approximately 40 minutes. During the summer time there are plenty of festivals to celebrate - don't miss the 'pig roast and Breton dancing' that is held in the square each August. The fireworks over the lake are a spectacular scene, especially from the villa. May and September are also popular months for exploring this town and area - and the colours of the trees in the forest in Autumn are breathtaking.
