Characteristic Village House With Stunning Mountain Views

Bedrooms 2
Property type house
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

House in Pigna, Liguria, stunning mountain views. Wifi. Step into another world!

Charming 500 year old townhouse on 4 levels. The property is south facing and gets the sun all year round, yet in the summer the thick walls keep it lovely and cool after a day in the sun. On the ground floor is the kitchen/dining-room with beautiful vaulted ceiling. A bedroom with 3 beds and a bathroom with shower is on the second floor. On the third floor is the master bedroom with stunning views. On the top floor is the bright, sunny living room where the views get even better! One can gaze out at night and see the village of Castelvittorio seemingly suspended in the air. The living room has a large comfortable sofa . It has a cathedral ceiling and french doors leading onto two small balconies. The house is very quaint but has all the mod cons for your comfort. The property has rare vehicle access close to the front door for unloading and there is parking 100m away. We have central heating making the house lovely and cosy for those winter nights. Free Wifi available.

About Gillian

My Husband and I and our three teenage children live in the North-East of England where we both work in education. My husband is also a musician and I use to be a professional dancer many moons ago! We have an incredibly busy life as most people do these days and long for our holidays in Italy when we can totally unwind.

Gillian purchased this house in 2006

Why Gillian chose Pigna

I always say the house chose us as I came across it whilst looking on the internet for a holiday in France! We loved Italy but had only ever been to Lake Garda and Rome. I couldn't get the house out of my head and was very pleasantly surprised when my husband didn't think I was completely crazy when I told him about it.

Considering it was a completely impulsive decision we have never regretted it. Although we had never heard of Liguria we have completely taken it to our hearts and have made many friends. The location is fantastic and the scenery beautiful. We are in a mountain location but have the best of both worlds as the beaches of both the French and Italian Rivieras are so close. You can practise both your French and Italian!

What makes this house unique

In the summer when the beaches are busy we don't even have to leave Pigna. There are beautiful swimming lakes which are very refreshing and they are extremely relaxing to spend a day by. However in the winter when swimming is not possible we are so close to lots of interesting places that it is perfect for an all year round holiday. We still have so much left to see. It can be a totally relaxing holiday or an active holiday as there are great walks and tennis courts. Our guests quite often feel as though as they have been on holiday with friends or family as my friend who looks after the property takes them under her wing. If they want to be left alone that is fine too.

Guestbook comments from the owner

> Just to let you know we had a lovely holiday, your house was great and had

> everything we needed. What a great base Pigna is for visiting the surrounding areas. We travelled around quite a bit visiting most of the small towns and some parts of the South of France. Christine, July 2012

Everything was wonderful, it was exactly what we wanted (old Italy) we fell in love with Pigna and the surrounding area and the generosity of the people was very good. We loved the house- beautiful! and the wedding was more then we could have dreamt, everything from the restaurant, photographer, flowers etc.. Liam and Barbara, Feb 2008

As if the views and vistas weren't enough, the kindness of the locals, the food and the wine made this holiday 'all it could be'. Justin & Anne Marie, Canada, May 08.

We have absolutely loved it here. We have found so much to do, it was impossible to do everything in the two weeks. See you next year! The Prudhoes, Sept 08

Notes on accommodation: The house has central-heating. Small children would have to be supervised carefully because of the stairs and balconies although we do have two stair gates. We have an English-speaking representative who would meet you with the keys and offer any advice needed. Everyone comments on how helpful she is and how she goes out of her way to make guests' stay as enjoyable as possible. A welcome pack of tea, coffee, a bottle of wine, bread, jam, biscuits and toilet rolls is provided on arrival. Sorry, no smoking or pets allowed. Outside: Two balconies on the top floor large enough to sit out and enjoy a drink whilst enjoying the beautiful views. The balconies are south-facing and because of the house's high position in the village enjoy the sun all year round. Everything in the village is within easy walking distance, piazza, bars, shops and restaurants. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Additional fee payable locally for cleaning. Linen and towels included. We respectfully ask that the property be left tidy and all rubbish be removed from the property. Other: There are brand new bunk-beds in the small bedroom with a third bed which pulls out from underneath. All have lovely comfortable mattresses making the beds suitable for adults as well as children.

Clean, stylish, and comfortable.

I'll start this review with a caveat, in that my wife Silvia and I are experienced, occasionally long-suffering, travelers and house-renters, and speaking for myself, age has made me rather particular (some might say fussy). We married in Pigna three years ago, so were very excited to be coming back to stay for the first time with two additions to our family, Alice & Arthur. Gillian was very helpful and communicative making sure we had relevant telephone numbers and contact details for Georgia (her Pigna based house manager who was wonderful), and was fabulous supplying and putting up two cots for us to use and a high chair which made our stay so much more comfortable (so 10 out of 10). Furthermore, we left Pigna to travel to Umbria but enjoyed being there so much decided to come back for another 10 days (but sadly in another house owned by someone else) but Gillian made sure the cots and high chair were lent to us in that house as well; we appreciated the gesture enormously. The house itself is arranged over four floors, with the kitchen conveniently for us, on the ground floor. We enjoy cooking and didn't want for anything. The bedrooms were cool, and the master bedroom had lovely sash windows opening up delightful views of the town and surrounding woodland and most importantly a big comfy bed. Likewise, the living room on the top floor, with even better views, was comfortable and stylish. The bathroom was clean and pleasant. Pigna itself is full of confusing little allies and walkways to the newcomer but Gillian's house is super accessible at the top of the village close to the piazza, so convenient for loading and unloading the car. Our experience was wholly positive and enjoyable and we wouldn't hesitate to come back to the same house when we inevitable return. As for Pigna, it is an idiosyncratic Ligurian working town, full of curious welcoming locals (a rare thing) and hidden charms; it crumbles and creaks in places as you'd expect from a medieval town but is delightful, historic and charming, surrounded as it is by fabulous mountains with hidden rock pools, waterfalls and wildlife. We loved our stay and will be back for certain!!

Owner's Response: Dear Giles, Silvia, Arthur and Alice, Thank you for the lovely review. We are delighted you enjoyed your stay in Pigna and our house so much. It was our pleasure to try to make your stay more comfortable. With three children ourselves (now grown-up), we appreciate that arriving somewhere after travelling, with tired little ones and finding things set up, can make all the difference. We are so glad you find Pigna so charming, as we do, and hope to see you back soon!

Perfetto Pigna!

  • 5 of 5

Absolutely stunning location, gorgeous town house and the owners really have thought of everything. Exceptionally clean, all the amenities you could possibly need and plenty of friendly people in the town and surrounding areas. My husband and I had an unforgettable stay here at the start of August and we will definitely return! The location is perfect for exploring the Italian - and French - riviera!

Lovely stay in Pigna

  • 4 of 5

We really loved Gillian's house in the old mediaeval town of Pigna. No cars, just the sound of people talking as they walked by. The house was well equipped and renovated to a high standard. We particularly loved the living room with its splendid views over the surrounding countryside.

summer 14

  • 5 of 5

We had a great week in Pigna, the house was all that we expected, cleaan and tidy and with great views, and I for one enjoyed the bells.

Although Pigna is small it is lively in the summer with several bars and restaurants, and surprisingly we found both affordable. The coast in is only 20 minutes away from where you can catch a train along the Riveria coast.

The owners are very helpful and really easy to deal with, absolutely no hesitation in recommending this property, in fact I already have to several friends.

Charismatic pig a

  • 5 of 5

Pigna is a quaint, beautiful town full of charm and character. I couldn't believe how friendly everyone was. This town house possesses all of the same charm and character that Pigna does. It also has all facilities that you need to ensure that you have an enjoyable stay.

The lady who greeted us was very helpful and friendly as well as knowledgeable of the local area.

There is lots to do round about Pigna too. The natural swimming pools were idyllic as was the concert that we went to at one of the beautiful, ancient churches. We also popped over to Monte Carlo and Nice!

All in all a fantastic holiday!

There are many more restaurants in the vicinity. It has 3 grocery shops and a chemist. There are beautiful natural swimming holes dotted around the village if you want a change from the beach. A nearby campsite has a swimming pool which can be used for a small fee - they even allow you to take your own food and drink. On a Saturday the market is held in the piazza and you can buy delicious cooked chickens perfect for a light lunch! Italians from cities such as Milan and Venice come to Pigna to escape from the hustle and bustle and relax and enjoy the simple life. Pigna has a wealth of art, monuments and history. The church of San Michelle, which dominates the village, is home to the famous 'Polyptych' painted by Giovanni Canevesio in 1500 whilst in the chapel of St Bernado you can admire the frescoes depicting 'The Last Judgement', also by Canavesio. The house is a good base from which to visit the Grand Prix in Monaco. The house is available for long winter lets at a heavily discounted price. Please enquire.
