About Simon and Paulette Appleby
2005 We moved to France in 2003 and have spent 7 years renovating our property. Simon was a manager with Reed in London and Paulette was a Director of QS plc, near Brighton. We decided to leave the UK, our very hectic lifestyles, to try and spend as much time as we could with our 2 children; who were 6 and 4 when we moved; while they still wanted to spend time with us! We have less money now but are free to do what we want when we want. We don't regret a single day here and we appreciate how lucky we are to be able to spend this time together. We love it here and are very surprised to find we have no desire to return to the UK and neither do the kids! In the winter we ski and in the summer we spend days at the beach. All of the activities we recommend we have tried during our time here - tree climbing, water sports, motor sports, rugby, and of course wine tasting! 2016. Well as it's over 12 years ago that I first wrote this, I thought a quick update might be called for! Our 2 boys have grown, the eldest is now 20 and studying at Loughborough and the second is soon to be 18 & is also planning to head to the UK for Uni. Simon has started a new business which involves lots of foreign travel and a reawakening of his business brain! Life at home remains a pleasure, the gardens are maturing and we are all fluent. No plans to move back to the UK still, although I'd like to join Simon in his travels a little more! Surprisingly we now have regular winter lets, so have fully insulated and installed large log burners in 2 of the gites. We have updated gites 1 & 2, and all 4 have been redecorated, as indeed has the pool area. We have built a childrens play area, playhouse & sandpit. We have a regular customer base, who return each year. which is lovely as they have become good friends. We have found that the people that are drawn to book our property have a similar out look on life as us which has lead to some very convivial summers! Life is good!

Why Simon and Paulette Appleby chose Madiran
We love Madiran - it is a small pretty village, in between the mountains and the coast. The house is right in the middle of the vines. There's loads of space and its very quite and peaceful. The heated pools look towards the mountains - you can swim while looking at the snow. We spent 3 years trying to find a property in France - and looked at hundreds of places - but bought Le Prielle as we fell in love with it at first sight, meaning our original budget had to be "tinkered with!" Although it's remote, we still have a very active social life with Fetes, tennis club, SAMBO, tournaments, art classes and rugby at weekends. We have integrated well into the French life, making friends easily with other parents, as we all speak French, although the kids are much better than us! Simon was voted on to the local council - which involves us in many local activities. There lots going on all year round for all ages. Paulette was on the village school PTA and has taken groups of children back to the UK including 3 "class de decouverts" she runs a weekly Art Workshop. Simon has taken 2 rugby tours to the UK & Ireland.
What makes this Farmhouse unique
Peace, calm and space. A real rural retreat providing time & space to enjoy your family, with mod-cons when you need them. The home and gardens are immense, with so much space for everyone. The evening silence, sitting sipping wine as the sun sets & the stars appear is always a joy. The unspoilt night sky enables fabulous views of the Milky Way and is constant wonder. We like to come back from an evening out, uncork a red & just lie on the grass gazing at the stars,, its quite unbelievable and something we could never have seen in Sussex & something you never tire of looking at! We have found the time to do those things we really want to do, but seldom have time to do. It's a special place that brings you back on touch with nature, family and what's really important in life. A very beautiful part of rural France.
