I don't know which came first - falling in love with Gozo or my Maltese husband!

After spending ten years working around the world and living out of a suitcase, I admit to being less than excited about being sent to Malta. With visions of crumbling buildings, endless churches and a slow pace of life, I was unprepared for the vibrancy and beauty of these islands. Infact, I actually loved them so much that I ended up moving there and marrying one of the locals.

Now, several years later, we are lucky enough to own two beautiful apartments, one in the idyllic seafront village of Xlendi and the other in the tranquil country village of Gharb, both of which we have furnished with considerable thought and effort to reflect the peace and character of these islands.

We have succeeded by creating a haven of peace and relaxation; a place to generally kick back and unwind. We have named our properties 'Azure and Scenic Escapes' as they really are an escape from the rest of the world. As one of our guests summed up, 'It was always a pleasure to return there at the end of each day'.

PS. I was right about the churches though!

Xlendi is undeniably very pretty with the village being centred around the horseshoe shaped bay that is superb for snorkelling, swimming and diving with its own natural reef. The beach is ideal for children as it gently slopes down to the water with several restaurants that overlook it, meaning you can relax while the children play. The bay is especially suited for those wishing to try diving as you can swim out from the edge and there is plenty to see even up to the 10 metre trial dive limit. There are plentiful restaurants including Ta'Karolina, voted 2nd best restaurant in Gozo, within a few minutes walk as well as a superb gelateria while a very friendly fruit and vegetable man and van visits every week day. There is also small supermarket open daily from 7am-7pm. Please note there are some wild hens and peacocks in a bird sanctuary opposite the apartment so the birds can sometimes be heard in the morning so if you are a light sleeper then please bear this in mind when booking the apartment. With tastefully decorated bedrooms, large open plan living area with balcony overlooking the village and a kitchen equipped with fridge freezer, halogen hob, coffee maker etc together with numerous guide books and local information, our apartment offers you a peaceful retreat whatever time of year you choose to visit.

About Elaine Meli

As my husbands family still live in Malta, we have been regular visitors to the islands since I lured him away from the sunshine to live in the UK many years ago. He claims he is still waiting for summer to arrive! Needing a bolthole from the hecticness that comes with being part of a large and noisy Mediterranean family, we bought our first property in Xlendi in 2003. It's only when various friends asked if they could stay that we thought maybe renting was the way to go. The overwhelming interest took us by surprise, so we felt more confident in buying our second property in 2007, this time with a pool, because us Brits do love to swim in a pool rather than the sea! Desperately not wanting to fall into the pot of cliches, but both places truly are magical, charming and sooo relaxing.

Why Elaine Meli chose Xlendi

I used to live in Malta and Xlendi was the first place I visited in Gozo. I just love the location and the friendly villagey feel to it, even in the height of summer. The shopkeepers have always got a smile and time to chat. It's a great place for a morning swim then you can chill out while having your post workout cappucino on the waterfront or equally a great place to sit in the evening with a drink while the harbour lights sparkle on the water. There is a great choice of restaurants that defy the size of the village and the best gelateria by far on the island. If I sound like a walking gastronomic advert, well it can't be helped really and you will see what I mean once you have been there. It's a pretty well connected village by Gozitan standards with a regular bus service.

What makes this apartment unique

Our apartment is in a quiet residential cul-de-sac set back against the cliffs so there is no traffic passing in front of us or behind for that matter! It is a large apartment and being third floor it looks out over the rooftops of the village, rather than at a brick wall, so it is bright and airy too. It is within a minutes stroll of the waterfront and restaurants, yet it is quiet and peaceful; a winning combination.

My partner and I stayed at this apartment for a week from mid-September and were overall very happy. The apartment would even suit 4 people comfortably, having 2 bedrooms and spacious living area and a balcony. The WiFi also worked flawlessly, which is important these days. The owner Elaine gave us detailed yet easy to understand instructions on how to get to the apartment. Xlendi Bay itself is a stunning area. We compared it to the other villages we visited in Gozo and we were extremely glad we chose to stay at Xlendi. There is a great selection of restaurants close by, favourites being The Boat House and Ta Karolina both of which are closest to the apartment. If using public transport then note that there is just one bus that runs every hour to Victoria, where you will have to transfer onto another bus to go anywhere. Journeys can take a while but that was not too much of an issue for us as we were on holiday and taking it slow. We also walked a lot and took taxis occasionally. We had a fantastic holiday and would definitely recommend this apartment to others.

Notes on accommodation: We provide a selection of books, board games and cards, DVDs and Xbox games. Free broadband WIFI is available and a telephone that can be used with a phone card that can be bought locally. The apartment is non-smoking. Cooling: Portable fans are provided plus the sliding patio doors have insect screens to provide day long fresh air circulation. Heating: Each bedroom has a portable heater and thick fleecy blankets and extra pillows to ensure a cosy home atmosphere for those cooler months - not that there are many! As we do not have to rely on solar power, there is always plenty of hot water for relaxing baths or showers. Outside: As well as a table and chairs and pots of cactus, the balcony has a fully retractable washing line for drying towels and wet costumes. The balcony has views over the village rooftops and valley and is a perfect spot for watching the local fireworks and festas which are almost a weekly occurrence in the summer months. We are in a quiet residential cul-de-sac and there is often parking directly outside the apartment. On the occasions when this is not possible, there are half a dozen spaces just around the corner or the free public car park in the village has plenty of spaces and is only a couple of minutes walk. We are literally a one minute stroll from the small shingle beach and village amenities and there are award-winning restaurants within a couple of minutes walk. There is a cashpoint in the village and a fruit and veg van comes at 1pm (not weekends) plus there is a Tourist Information office and a small supermarket open daily from 7-7. The regular bus services runs from a stop just a couple of minutes walk. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Indoor towels and bedlinen (except for the cot) are provided. Please bring your own beach towels. Apartment is cleaned on a weekly basis and the linen is also changed weekly. Other: We provide a travel cot and mattress which you are welcome to use but please provide your own linen. There is a bird sanctuary next door with a dozen or so birds that can wake early.

The apartment was great and was fully equipped, with plenty of towels, toiletries in case you ran out, pots and pans, storage, and entertainment.

It is located a 2 minute walk to the sea front so is in an ideal place. Although the bird sanctuary next door was loud, it was great to see and hear the tweeting of birds, from geese to peacocks.

The flats and the village is really quiet too. Lots of bars and a couple of little shops to keep you supplied. Munxar is about a 25 minute walk and Victoria around 30-40 mins. Both have shops with plenty of products for when you need to stock up.

The buses are just 2 euros and are quite punctual.

We rented this apartment for 2 people and it was more than big enough - easily sleep 5 and be comfortable! Great stay!

Good spaceous apartment

The apartment itself was generally quite good with plenty of space. However, the climb of 60 stairs to get to it may not suit everyone (it did not bother us).

There is a bath but if you want to use it you will find that the hot water supply is not enough to fill the bath, so you have to supplement it with other hot water.

Also, there is only one parking space at the bottom of the Block, so when this is occupied you have to park in the village somewhere and walk back to the apartment... not much of a problem when we went but I would imagine it could be at the height of the season.

Xlendi itself has many restaurants that are quite good but there are no shops and this is the second busiest place on the island after the capital (Victoria). The capital itself is about 3 miles away. All-in-all we found that Gozo was a bit quiet for a full holiday.

Owner's Response: Many thanks for your feedback and comments. All the points you have mentioned are things we make guests aware of before they book so they can make an informed decision. If the parking spaces near the apartment are full then there is a large free public car park in the village which is about a 3 minute walk. There is a small grocery store on Xlendi that is open daily but it does have the charm of a local village without the big shops so if you need somewhere a bit livelier then perhaps Victoria or the bigger more touristy seafront village of Marsalforn or even Malta are better options.

comfotable flat in good location

Elaine's appartment was great. It was clean and tidy when we arrived and the descriptions were accurate. It was great to have access to all the books and leaflets on local walks and events.

If you are planning to walk then i would recommend buyiong a map of the island as the tourist guides about walkes are very difficult to follow and are mainly a work of fiction!

Xlendi haqd a great range of places to eat even at this time of year and a small shop of breakfast basics so again out of season it is a great place to stay.

Great Apartment, Great Location

A very spacious and comfortable apartment tucked away in Xlendi Bay but a minutes stroll from the sea front and local restaurants which served very good quality food at very reasonable prices. The apartment was clean throughout and provided all you needed for a family stay and easily catered for our party of 3 adults and 2 children. Parking was no problem at all with opportunities to park within minutes of the apartment (a little tip though - dont park under the trees over night)

This was the first time we had stayed on the island in February and it was much quieter than during other times of the year, which was a nice change, however as the weekend approached the area became more lively for a change of pace. We have visited Xlendi in the summer too and it can get very busy and seems to be a popular area for divers.

The local shop stocked the basics needed but the bigger supermarkets are not far away - no more than 5-10 minutes by car.

Will recommend this apartment to family and friends.

Great location and bright, clean apartment

We were a little disappointed that the apartment didn't have any views of the harbour (our fault, should have looked at the description more carefully) but the sun drenched balcony and quiet position, set back just a few metres from the seafront, soon made up for this.

Good public transport links and plenty of places to visit with some tasty restaurants right on the seafront. Recommend Moby Dick's for delicious food and excellent service!

Apartment was very clean, spacious and welcoming (especially with the much appreciated welcome pack!). No air-conditioning so relied on fans to keep cool.

Not suitable for less physically able as on third floor and there is no lift. Great exercise on a daily basis but not good for trying to heave suitcases up and down.

Would be nice to have a microwave as there is only a hob with no grill or oven, so eating in was rather limited.

Really enjoyed our stay, owner very helpful with transport organisation, lovely to sit out on balcony and listen to the peacocks!

The warm, gentle waters of Xlendi Bay are ideal for families with children because of the protection from strong currents provided by the natural reef surrounding the bay. Ramla Bay is a magnificent sweep of red sand on the north of the island, there are also several rocky coves for secluded swimming and several good sandy beaches on the north west of Malta. The apartment is an excellent base for exploring the rest of the island with the capital Victoria and its' markets only 5 minutes by road.


Fly to Malta's International Airport from London Heathrow/Gatwick in just 3-3½ hours. Malta is also served by numerous other large European airports and is very well connected. Prices can start from as little as £50 plus tax per person.


'Azure Escapes' apartment is situated at sea-level (a lot of rental properties are situated at the top of a very steep unlit hill approx 10 mins walk from the village) on the right hand side of Xlendi bay. We are approx 5 mins by car from the capital Victoria and 20 mins to Mgarr harbour and the ferry to Malta. We are just 7 minutes from Dwerja and the Azure Window and only 10 minutes from the red sandy bay of Ramla and the prehistoric temples of Ggantija.

Transfers to Gozo - There are several options as detailed: For a stress free start to your holiday, we can organise private transfers from Malta airport direct to our apartment. Please contact us for a quote. Alternatively there is a public bus service from €4.50 (£3.40) per person direct to Cirkewwa where you can catch the regular Gozo ferry. The ferry runs frequently (approx every 45 mins) and costs €4.75 (£3.60) per foot passenger. The crossing takes around 25 mins. The other option is to hire a car at Malta's airport. Car hire is amongst the cheapest in Europe, with prices starting from €18 (£14) per day. Please contact us for a quote. Whichever mode of transport you choose, it is a scenic journey along the coast road and the ferry has excellent facilities including a magazine kiosk and cafeteria. The total transfer time should not exceed an hour and a half. Xlendi has some excellent restaurants with a choice of Italian pizza and pasta, local cuisine and fish and seafood. Xlendi is also home to some superb family owned and run Mediterranean restaurants. During the summer months, there is a popular open-air venue called ‘La Grotta’, situated in an open cave approx half a mile away on the hillside leading out of Xlendi. It is ideally positioned within walking distance but far enough away that you will not be disturbed by the music if you prefer a quieter evening. Gozo is home to some beautiful peaceful beaches, sleepy villages, prehistoric temples older than Stonehenge, the legend of the goddess Calypso and some of the most spectacular diving sites in the Mediterranean. Wander around the baroque modern day capital Valletta, peruse the delights of colourful Marsaxlokk and its famous Sunday market; amble through the medieval 'silent city' of Mdina for breathtaking views or unwind in one of the award winnings spas.
