We had a wonderful week in La Rongere, thank you for having us. The weather was gorgeous, the garden is my 'perfect garden' and the owner and gardener service was impeccable. Thank you for a great stay.
Gorgeous huge chateau
What a place! Absolutely massive with tonnes of areas to explore (top tip - excellent for hide and seek with the kids) - so big in fact that it wasn't till the last day I discovered an entire floor of one of the wings I'd not been in. Gardens and pool are lovely too.
It's blissfully in the middle of no-where, so you'll need a car or a bike when you want to go and explore. We had an amazing week and Christine et al couldn't have been more helpful.
We could not have imagined how wonderful Chateau de la Rongere would be when we made the booking many months ago.
The building itself is stunning and full of history. It was easy to get lost as there are so many rooms but each one with a different character. This home is well loved and thoughtfully styled. We were welcomed with vases of fresh flowers from the garden.
The gardens are utterly beautiful and we ate salad and herbs from it each day. The pool is gorgeous and a wonderful place to hang out as we had such warm weather. The ping pong table also got a work out!!
There are lots of places to explore and discover and even with a big group you can find some solace in the grounds. It is very private and no need to worry about neighbours.
The kitchen was equipped with pretty much everything you need and lots of crockery/cutlery. We ate outside every night and the AGA was a delight to cook on once we got the hang of it.
There is a small village and larger town nearby to get supplies.
Overall we had the most magical 10 days celebrating a milestone birthday (thank you to Emmanuel again for your beautiful table arrangement and Christine and her daughters for looking after us) and look forward to returning again one day. For a uniquely French country experience, La Rongere can not be faulted. Thank you to Bridget and her team for welcoming us.
Thank you for such a lovely heartfelt review. We look forward to hosting you again in the future!
A truly magical and restful place to spend a holiday!
This place has five stars for good reason. Everything about it was wonderful — from the maze-like array of rooms to the amazing grounds with endless activities. And everyone associated with the property was fantastic to deal with, starting with the incredibly patient Bridget, who helped resolve an inadvertently overly complicated booking, to Kate who graciously and seemingly effortlessly wore many hats during the week from caretaker to masseuse to caterer — it's a shame that visitors after September won't meet her as she is moving back to the UK, but I look forward to visiting her massage therapy business after she gets set up! And thanks too to Annie for the fabulous last night dinner (if you are thinking about having any meals catered, I highly recommend it — the food was perfection and the cost very reasonable) and the suggestion to take a final photo with everyone in the chateau windows.
As for the house, it took ages to figure out who went in what bedroom because there are so many rooms and rooms off of rooms. This is one place where a floorpan isn't really much use, so I suggest getting advice from Bridget or simply waiting until you're there to sort it out (we ended up not using all the rooms). But what rooms! From the largest room up one level with the shower in the tower to the princess bed single room, there is something for everyone (which was part of the challenge). But do be aware that some of the bedrooms feed into each other, so best if everyone is on friendly terms! :)
We were grateful for our one partially rainy day because we finally made use of the gorgeous dining room. Otherwise, all of our meals were held outside with the large kitchen as a hangout hub, made more so because of the comfy couch and arm chair. And the small lounge off to the side was a perfect place for pre-dinner cocktails and oysters bought in Cancale (a day trip worth doing)!
I could go on, but suffice it to say that I highly recommend staying here. It feels like a well-loved family home but of a grand scale — one that is elegant but not precious, and above all, welcoming. As one of my friends wrote after we left, "It was honestly one of the best holidays we've had and absolutely the most memorable." Thank you for making my birthday celebration so memorable for me and my family and friends. I couldn't think of a more perfect spot to spend the week and ring in the next decade!
(Note: we rented the cottage as well, and I'm putting a separate review there.)
Serene, calming, beautifully aged
This property has reserved all the charm that centuries of use has given it while having just the right amount of modern conveniences to make our stay comfortable. We had the best nights sleep and memorable days. Whether we spent our time at the castle or went to a local attraction, nothing disappointed.
Rustic but with modern amenities in a beautiful setting
What an awesome stay. The house and grounds are lovely. The house is rustic, but it is also from the 11th century. Rooms are spacious and the kitchen is cozy. We loved the dining room, which has a really long table and can accommodate 12 or more people. The owner Bridget was so easy to work with and Kate who helps manage the property was wonderful. She cooked us a very delicious meal, but hurry if you are going to use her as she will be returning to England in 6 months. Our family would absolutely choose to stay at the Chateau again if the opportunity arose. Thanks Bridget and Kate for an amazing experience.
Thank you very much Julie. Your group was wonderful and treated the chateau so well. We hope to have you as guests again in the future!
