About Suzanne and Rob Lea
We moved out to the Chamonix Valley in 2001 because we love the beautiful mountainous setting and the wonderful outdoor adventure playground which it provides. We also love being here - meeting our guests personally at the Alpine Retreat whenever possible and ensuring that they have a memorable holiday. We enjoy all the Winter sports in season, paragliding in Summer, and running. We know we are very lucky to be here and are always keen to share it with you!
Suzanne and Rob Lea purchased this Chalet in 2000
Why Suzanne and Rob Lea chose Les Houches
This area is justifiably world-renowned as a Mecca for outdoor enthusiasts as well as a haven for those wanting to relax and unwind from the stresses of everyday life. We have proved to ourselves that this really is true! The easy access by motorway, (almost empty by UK standards!) and the availability of cable cars in Spring, Summer and Winter enable even the youngest and our more mature visitors to appreciate the high mountains at their very best. The skiing is right on the doorstep and the Summer activities range from canyoning/white water rafting through to biking, hiking, climbing and even flying! So there is truly something for everyone...
What makes this Chalet unique
The Alpine Retreat is ideally located between the 2 ski lifts of Les Houches Ski resort, Chamonix. We are just 5 mins walk from both stations and you can ski right back to the garden. The snow canons enable skiing from mid-Dec to Mid-Apr; the North facing slopes are perfect for good quality snow throughout the season. The excellent mix of runs favour mixed ability groups, with the famous World Cup run passing by the Retreat for the more adventurous! There are bars and restaurants about 5 mins walk down the road and the village centre is about 10 mins walk or a free bus ride away. The huge garden is ideal for sledging and snowmen in Winter, and after the snows, the uninterrupted views of the majestic Mont Blanc range are unsurpassed in the valley. Sitting and relaxing has never been so good!
100% refund for cancellations more than 60 days before check-in date.
Best time ever, location in very good area with gorgeous view, thank you to the host and warm welcome!!!
Thank you, Zinaida, for your lovely review - you were our first Romanian/Moldovan guests and we loved your idea of the BBQ in the snow! Thanks for a great evening, fascinating company, superb home-reared/grown food and genuine hospitality. A lovely stay - do come again! Suzanne and Rob
We had a fantastic week staying in the lovely farmhouse. Excellent location, stunning views, well equipped house and beautiful garden all combined to make our stay to celebrate my 40th birthday as perfect as i could have hoped for. Les Houches is a great location away from the bustle of Chamonix but only a short free bus ride away when we wanted to visit. Hardly needed to use the car as free public transport in the valley was so good.
Frankie and Jerry were very welcoming and were so helpful with local knowledge.
We enjoyed trips out to Aguil du Midi, Mer de Glace, Brevent and Flegere cable cars, Mountain tramway, Annecy and generally exploring Chamonix and the whole valley. Being there to see the finish of UTMB was an added bonus.
Best bits. ...too many to mention. Worst bit...leaving to come home.
Thank you for a very special stay. We definitely want to come back.
Thank you so much for such a wonderful review of your birthday adventures at The Alpine Retreat! We were delighted that you enjoyed your explorations and saw so many fantastic places. Frankie and Jerry really enjoyed your company and we both would like to extend a warm welcome to join the growing band of our many returning guests .....thank you for choosing the Alpine Retreat - we hope to see you again very soon :-)
Wonderful stay in Les Houches
Wanted to see the mountains in summer for the first time. Heard a lot of Chamonix so went there for hiking. We were chosing where to stay based on location and price. Alpine Retreat is just few steps from several nice trails, lifts are around the corner in case you need them. Enough of activities for family with three kids for at least couple of days, no need to use a car or public transport.
Easy to get to any location in the valley from Alpine Retreat. Several grocery shops are in vicinity though for serious shopping we went with the car. Closest bakery is few hundred meters away (bread is good but croissants are not the best in the valley).
The house is clean (most important for us) and really convenient for whatever duration stay. Kitchen is good with enough of equipment though rather old but in good condition (dishwasher is terribly loud but you do not hear that upstairs). They even have washing machine (big bonus for us).
Sleeping rooms are upstairs. Did not use one of four rooms at all. Everyone slept conveniently. Double bed could be a bit longer though. Would not chose to stay with another family or friends, would not be enough of privacy in that case, one family fits perfectly.
Three bathrooms is a good thing for a big family obviously. Although using of two showers at the same time dd not work well, not enough pressure for hot water,
Hosts were very nice and welcoming. Could advise on where to go and what to see. We were too engaged in our planned activities so did not have enough time to chat with them bit more which could be nice as we felt.
Completely enjoyed our stay.
Thank you, A B, for your nice review - we were delighted that your active family had such a great time exploring the mountains from the Alpine Retreat.
We will take a look at the water pressure situation in the showers - we didn't know that the pressure needed boosting, so thanks for letting us know!
Sorry you found the beds a little short - whilst they are the full length - you are even taller than Rob (lucky for you!) and so we are not at all surprised!!
You would be very welcome to return and we hope that you do. Good luck with your family fun and thank you again, Suzanne and Rob
Alpine Retreat farmhouse
We enjoyed another great walking holiday this summer whilst staying at The Alpine Retreat in Les Houches – the weather improved just in time for us. The Farmhouse is ideally located for our group, with a bus stop just 50m from the door that gives easy access to Argentiere and beyond, or we can catch the valley train, or use the Bellevue lift (a few minutes walk towards the village) that opens up lovely walks to Les Contamines or St Gervais. And it’s always great to get back for tea and cakes in the lovely garden and to enjoy the spectacular view along the valley to Aiguille du Midi and the other famous peaks in the range. We mainly self-cater, the local supermarket is well-stocked, the kitchen is well equipped, and we spend most of the evenings chatting around the dining room table in the comfortable warmth provided by the log burner. The guardians appointed this year by Rob and Suzanne were very helpful, it was a pleasure to meet them. All in all, an experience to be recommended.
Had a fabulous week staying at The Alpine Retreat. The house is so spacious, clean and comfortable and its position in the village is perfect. It's such a relaxing home from home after a day on the slopes. We were a family/friends group of 8 and really appreciated all the space, no tripping over eachother here!
Suzanne and Rob made the booking process so easy. Communication was prompt and any query dealt with immediately. Chrystine and Richard in resort couldn't have been more helpful, but also very discreet. Thank you all so much.
We would love to return and have no hesitation in recommending this wonderful property!
Dear B, Thank you so much for making time to write such a lovely review - we and Chrystine and Richard are all delighted that you and your ski group enjoyed such a fantastic holiday here at The Alpine Retreat. We are also thrilled that you would like to return - you would be extremely welcome :-) The same pleasure awaits you all! Here's to Winter 2016/17 ....
Magnificent week in Les houches.
A fabulous week at the farmhouse once again. Great hosts in Rod and Suzanne. I think this must be our fifth or sixth time at the Alpine retreat and it never disappoints. If anyone is wanting a great self catered location with access to fantastic skiing this has to be the place to stay. Roll on next time.
Thank you, W, for your lovely review of The Alpine Retreat Farmhouse! As ever, it was great to have you and your family around :-) It was also good to meet your friends, and we were delighted that you all had such a good holiday. In your words "You'll never have a better holiday, but you might have one equally as good!" We hope to be part of that, and look forward very much to seeing you again next time round. Thank you and have a happy and active 2016! S&R
Local lakes provide ample opportunities for swimming in the summer. Several of the lakes have artificial beaches (sand covered areas) along part of their length.
Most of our guests either fly to Geneva airport (Easyjet) which is less than an hour's drive from the Alpine Retreat or drive from the UK (8 hours from the French ferry ports). Other airports include: Lyon (2 hours), and Turin (1 3/4 hours) drive. We can arrange transfers from Geneva airport if required.
We are ideally located in the village of Les Houches, Chamonix, and are only a 3-minute walk from shops, restaurants and bars.
The Alpine capital of Chamonix is just 5km away. We can arrange free tickets for the regular local buses and trains up and down the valley. For a taste of Italy, why not use the Mont Blanc tunnel; in less than half an hour you can be enjoying a pizza in the Italian town of Courmeyeur or hiking in the beautiful Val Ferret, or relaxing in the Roman Spa at Pre St Didier.
In the Chamonix valley, the whole concept of easy access to the mountains is born out in reality with trains, tramways and a host of superbly efficient cable cars which whisk you up to the hundreds of well-marked walking/biking trails. It is also easy to visit one of the many glaciers or to get a taste of river-rafting, canyoning or even paragliding, or perhaps to visit one of the many animal parks. Additionally, several activity centres offer everything from tennis to swimming and ice-skating to golf. Both Les Houches and Chamonix have a wide range of restaurants and bars which offer cuisine and entertainment to cater for every taste and budget.
