Overview

About the property

Farmhouse in Longoio, Bagni di Lucca, Tuscany - Terraced Garden with Breathtaking Mountain Views

Set among terraces at 500 metres and reached by a narrow tarmac road, this newly restored farmhouse commands breathtaking mountain views. A shop in the next village supplies basic provisions - just a few minutes by car or a pleasant walk. Bagni di Lucca, with restaurants, outdoor swimming pool and thermal spa, is a 15 minute drive. The walled city of Lucca is 40 minutes and the small ski resort of Abetone under an hour. There are large sunny patios back and front (sunloungers and garden furniture provided) and a wild terraced garden of about 2 acres. The interior is typically Tuscan, with tiled floors, whitewashed walls and exposed chestnut and terracotta ceilings. Well equipped and comfortably furnished, the thick stone walls keep it cool in summer, while central heating and woodburning stove create a cosy haven in winter. The house provides an excellent base at any season for exploring the surroundings by car or on foot, and many beautiful walks start from the door.

About Dr K J T Wright

Ken is a retired doctor and practicing psychoanalyst, Alice a retired RGN. We enjoy foreign travel but prefer independent holidays in quiet and interesting locations. We enjoy meeting people from different cultures and the moments of connection that transcend language barriers. We love beautiful and unspoiled scenery and closeness to nature is part of what we look for when we go away. As we've got older, we've enjoyed the feeling of making a home from home, while using the materials and idiom of the local culture. We enjoy the feeling of returning to these domains and renewing the friendships we've made.

Dr K J T Wright purchased this farmhouse in 2001

Why Dr K J T Wright chose Bagni di Lucca

In some ways the house was a lucky chance. We went out to see a property we found on the internet and fell in love with the area for its forested mountains and beautiful rivers, its unspoiled peacefulness and friendly people. We then looked more seriously, viewing many, and the house we bought was the one we had put at the bottom of the list! The photo had portrayed a ruin with major work to be done but when we stepped out of the car the decision was instantaneous - the setting and view had bowled us over. It was close to a village with a village shop - now sadly closed - and only a a short car ride to Bagni di Lucca, an enchanting old spa town loved by the 19th C. literati, and now a sleepy market town with low key tourism. And somewhere in the ruin, we could see the house of our dreams.

What makes this farmhouse unique

What do we enjoy the most? Peace and relaxation, beautiful views, mountain gardening - we have built a beautiful rock herb-garden behind the house - walks straight from the door. Walking of all sorts - from the old mule tracks between the villages to strenuous mountain-walking on marked trails. The mountain air, the fireflies in June, the local food from a really good choice of restaurants. The outdoor swimming pool in Bagni di Lucca - one of the best we have seen. And the city of Lucca - a hidden mediaeval gem so much more manageable (and nearer) than Florence - with its mediaeval walls, palace lined streets with beautiful doorways, and incredibly tasteful and tempting shops! Finally, the house itself with its two patios that invite you just to sit and look... and look... and look...

Notes:
Notes on accommodation: Parking in front of house. Central heating (gas fired boiler), woodburning stove. Mains electricity and water. Drainage to septic tank. Might not be suitable for very young children because of steep terrain. Swimming towels are not provided. The garden is sometimes visited by a couple of semi-feral cats. They are very timid and easily shooed away and we strongly discourage feeding them or letting them into the house. Outside: Large patios at front and rear of property with panoramic views. Sunny even in winter, but some shade always available. Expanding teak table with large parasol and 6 teak chairs, 4 sunloungers, deckchairs, barbecue. Wild terraced garden of two acres (partly wooded). Parking in front of house. Utility Room: Washing machine, folding clothes dryer, iron and ironing board, portable gas heater. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels and bed linen are included and changed weekly. Cleaning before and after visit only.

A lovely house, fantastic views, peace and quiet

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely holiday enjoying the house & garden with views to sit and just look. We loved the house with its terraces & different places to sit with a morning coffee and evening glass of wine. Loved the area exploring all the hillside villages.

It was a pleasure speaking to Ken via email in the run up to our holiday. Thankyou Ken and Alice for sharing your house we will go back in the future definitely!

Lovely house

  • 5 of 5

Lovely house. Well equipped with everything we needed. Bed was surprisingly comfortable, as at first glance it looked as if it could be a bit 'solid'. Super views from the property. Plenty of garden furniture for the time we spent outside on the patios. The cats were no problem really. A previous holiday maker had left a bag of food which the cats knew about. A quick fill up of the bowl outside and they were happy. There was a bit of a cat smell around the back patio but we got used to it pretty quickly. The instructions to the property are fine during daylight hours, but finding the 'yellow house' in the dark is an impossibility when you don't know the area. The roads to the property itself are very narrow and a smaller car is advised. We would definitely recommend this property and would consider a return visit at some time in the future.

Wonderful place with everything you need

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here in the first 2 weeks of august. It was very hot, but inside the house (as long as we kept the doors and shutters closed) it was nice and cooler. The house was great, it had everything we needed. Our daughters (ages 5 and 9 yrs) loved the garden and played there all day. They also loved the cats! Feeding them and petting the ones that liked to be touched was a real treat for them. Especially the little kitten!

We loved the views, sitting on the terrace until it was completely dark. The silence , the peace and quiet, all was great!! We made some trips to visit Lucca and Firenze, but mostly went swimming in the river or at sea and just enjoyed the house and it's surroundings. We'd love to come back sometime!! Stunning

  • 5 of 5

We left the uk with high expectations - a family of 4 with 2 children aged 10 and 17 - so not easy to please!

Simply put the house and the area was stunning and exceeded our expectations. The house(all you need and more) and location are perfect, the views, the sounds, the tranquility would be enjoyed by anyone. The location is ideal for visiting Florence, Lucca, Pisa etc - we used the trains from Bagni and found them very good - once we had found the station in Bagni.

Bagni itself has everything you need - good restaurants, local shops - the bread shop and the fruit and veg shop in particular. We all enjoyed too much Gelato. Our Daughter loved the swimming pool once there she hardly came out of the water - a great value day at 6.50 euros per day and never really got overly busy.

The ultimate compliment I can make is that all of us said tht this was the best overall holiday experience we have had - and we have done similar all over France previously - and we will be returning.

Further Details:

The Garfagnana and Val di Lima are little known areas of Tuscany and still relatively unspoilt. The people are friendly and tourism is low key. Separated from the sea by the Apuan Alps and lying in the foothills of the Appennines, the region's scenery is wild and beautiful deer, wild boar and porcupine are plentiful - you may glimpse them on your travels and if you're lucky, in the garden. The landscape is dotted with mountain villages, each with its own charm. Longoio is one such village and at 500 metres escapes the worst of the summer heat. The area is ideal for walking at all levels, especially in spring and autumn. Escorted riding can be found near Bagni di Lucca, river bathing is possible in a number of places and caves can be visited at Grotto di Vento.
