Villa in Competa, Andalucia, Spain - Peaceful Location within the Sierra Almijara National Park

Very much a one-off and unique villa, secluded but not isolated, with very private pool enjoying dramatic and spectacular south facing views over mountain, valley and sea. A quiet 2 bedroom and 2 bathroom recently upgraded finca, well furnished, modern kitchen and a large living area. From the terrace one can sometimes see the lights of the North African coastline and the Rif Mountains beyond to the west and the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range to the east. All windows have stunning views. 10 minute drive away to Competa. Loungers and parasols are provided. New recently extended terraces create loads of shade and loads of sun and usually a gentle breeze. Wonderful sunrises and amazing sunsets. Large new barbecue recently installed.

About Rory Carson

We're a family from Oxfordshire and in 1982 we bought a property in Menorca when our children were young and then decided to move to mainland Spain when they got older.

We have 2 Labradors which tend to limit us on travel (!)but spend as much time in Spain as possible; we love the country and we love the people.

We chose this villa in Competa because the village is not too small and not too big! Great variety of restaurants and walks etc. The villa itself is a complete one-off with some of the mos spectacular views, from its terraces, in the area. The North African coastline and mountains can sometimes be seen in the distance! The local Spanish community are very friendly and, whilst keeping their traditional culture, mix happily with the tourists and expats.

Location, location, location!

This property is situated on the top of a hill overlooking the Sierra Almijara mountain range on one side and the Mediterranean Sea on the other.......sometimes with the North Africa coastline and the Rif Mountains looming in the distance. Although remote the villa is not isolated, with Competa being about a 10 minute drive away. Away from the tourists and away from the masses!

On the other hand the beach restaurants of Nerja, offering some of the finest and freshest sea food, are about a 30 minute drive and the historic city of Malaga about 45 minutes with a ferry terminal to the Spanish enclave of Mellila in North Africa.

The villa is in a perfect base to visit, Sevilla, Cordoba, Ronda and Granada with the Alhambra Palace is only about a 90 minute drive.

What makes this villa unique

The property is comfortable but not ostentacious. It is quiet and the night sky is virtually pollution free! The traditional Spain is on your doorstep with the local goatherd being shepharded around the local countryside. The vineyards and farmland are still being hand harvested and the land is worked throughout the seasons. Competa wine, grown on the vineyard local to the property is well known and an ideal present to take home. The Competa honey collected in beehives in the mountains overlooking the property is another "must have"! The cooler mountain walks are easily accessible from the villa and the book "The 25 best walks in Competa" which provides a great selection and variety of different grades of walks is available in the villa.

Notes:
Notes on accommodation: Each bedroom has ceiling fans and radiators. The property is situated on the top of a valley with views to the Nerja coastline and the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Outside: The pool is private to Finca Tabitha residents, is totally secluded and not overlooked and is approx 12 x 20ft. 4 Sun loungers are provided along with table, chairs and 2 barbeques (one electric and one wood / charcoal). One large sunny patio and one with sufficient all day shade. Parking area for upto 2 cars. Utility Room: Washing machine. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels and linen are included but beach towels are not. Property is cleaned before and after every rental. To ensure the property is cleaned to a high standard it would be appreciated that arrivals should be after 3pm and departures before 11am.

Brilliant view but a great time was not had by all!

Firstly I must say that the owner Rory was very helpful, and accommodated our stay to the point of deferring his own planned break . That said , we did not have a good fortnights stay. The weather has been bad in Spain as it has been here, so Spring was only just happening . The drive up to the house was challenging without recourse to a 4 wheel drive. Once there we loved seeing Hoopoes and swallow tail butterflies. The view was great . The house itself was very cold and felt damp, which is not unusual at that time of year in that region, but we missed the comfort of a wood burner stove. We had difficulty with the gas fire, and only managed to light it successfully on one occasion. So, our days were warm but the evenings very uncomfortable, we took a trip to buy sleeping bags which improved things a little for nighttime. An electric convector heater, oil radiator and aging portable gas heater (which the Owner kindly arranged) were not enough to keep us warm. During our second week , possibly on Good Friday, the coffeemaker shorted the electrical fuse box and it transpired, after Easter weekend that a new cooker was needed. We took a trip to Córdoba but had we not done that would have been without a cooked meal for several days rather than just a couple . So, all in all it wasn’t a great time but I think it was a combination of factors and an element of bad luck. I can imagine that the view and swimming pool during the summer would make a stay quite delightful .

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review. I was aware that your trip to Finca Tabitha was not a great success. As you say the weather in the Iberian Peninsular has been one of the worst, cold, wet and windy and when we arrived, just after you, there was even snow. The remoteness of the villa is part of its charm and a couple of years ago we concreted the road which makes access much easier. The gas fire was serviced in mid February and according to our agent, was in perfect working order; we certainly relied on it when we went out just after you. It is undoubtedly far more heat efficient than a wood burning stove and our website never said or implied we had a wood burning stove. I understand our agent came up to the villa on various occasions to explain how it worked. In addition to the gas fire we have convection heaters in both bedrooms, as well as sufficient duvets and blankets, and as instructed our agent also bought up a portable gas heater for you. We replaced the oven and hobs promptly after the Easter break and of course there was always a microwave and kettle. We have had the property for many years and 3 month winter lets are not uncommon and the villa usually warms up pretty well and pretty quickly. I feel perhaps with the exceptionally cold weather during your stay we should have made sure the heating was on for 2 or 3 days before your arrival. I know how important this holiday was for you both and I am sorry it did not live up to expectations. If you feel brave enough to go again in the warmer months let me know and I am sure we can arrange something for you.

Beautiful and relaxing

Outstanding views, the quietness and the privacy totally eclipsed any disappointments.

The road quickly turned to track and our Fiat 500 shuddered, nonetheless we continued onwards and upwards literally.... hairpin turns, a final push we arrived and the need for a stiff drink evaporated upon seeing Tabitha and her views. Internally, clean with a homely feel. We drove straight into Competa and found the residents to be friendly when attempting Spanglish to purchase food and water supplies.

Finca Tabitha is a cosy home with good facilities

We enjoyed our stay, the finca is comfortable and in a fantastic location, the views are spectacular, very private but in close access to Competa which has good amenities. We would return for another stay.

We stayed 3 weeks in Finca Tabitha. We have stayed many places all over the world, but never had a view like this, it is amazing. The directions we recived from the owner, was very good, and was a great help, to find the house. The house has all you need. If you want to stay away from it all, and all in private, we certainly recommend Finca Tabitha.

Great place to stay central to the coastal regions of the Costa del Sol

Beautiful place and like a home from home. Fantastic views of the mountains and coastline and great sunsets! Very close to Nerja and other areas and the town of Competa has many places to eat and quite a lively place at night. Would definitely recommend staying here. Very peaceful and relaxing. Special interest holidays:

This holiday mountain retreat acts as an ideal base for exploring the local white washed villages, walking in the hills, bird watching, horse riding, photography, painting, quad biking, hang gliding, 4x4 excursions or just lazing by the pool! Competa has a local tourist office where it is possible to arrange all or any of the above! A Spanish learning school is also situated in Competa. Ferries ply daily between the Malaga ferry terminal and the North African mainland. Further along the coast it is possible to cross the Mediterranean from Algeciras (or Tarifa) to Morocco, with or without car, which can take from 35 mins (phone 0034 956681830). Trips to Gibraltar are also possible. In the winter months there is active skiing in the Sierra Nevada about 90 minutes away.

Coast/Beach:

The nearest beaches are at Nerja and Torrox (about 30 minutes away) which boasts some of the finest beaches in the Costas. Additional more secluded beaches can be found situated further along the coast. Nerja has some spectacular underground caves believed to be the largest in Europe, which are well worth viewing as well as various beach restaurants some providing excellent locally caught fish.

Travel:

The nearest airport is Malaga which is about 60 minutes away. There are frequent flights from many UK airports to Malaga from less than £69 return. It is possible to rent a car at Granada airport and visit the Alhambra Palace and surrounding area and drop it off at Malaga airport at the end of the holiday. Car rental is essential and is competitively priced with prices ranging from less than £15 per day. For car rental try Scott at IVR on 01442 230050 who can usually give some pretty good prices

Distances:

Competa is a 10 minute drive away. Malaga is about 45 minutes away. Granada and the Alhambra Palace is about a 90 minute drive away. Gibralter and the ferry terminal to Africa is about a 3 hour motorway drive. The Malaga ferry terminal to the North African Spanish enclave of Mellila is about an hours drive.

Further Details:

Competa is a small but thriving village which hosts a hotel, many restaurants and tapas bars, a night club and a variety of supermarkets, banks and commercial shops selling local honey and antiques, etc. A Spanish language school is also situated in Competa.

Booking Notes:
A non refundable 20% deposit to be taken at time of booking with the remainder 8 weeks before departure. A £100 deposit is taken against breakages and damage which will be refunded within 7 days of vacating the villa. A welcome food and drink pack can arranged at a cost of 10 euros plus the cost of the provisions requested.

Changeover Day:
Changeover day is Saturday but can be negotiable. The property is available from 15.00hrs or thereabouts and should be vacated by 11.00hrs although this can also be negotiable.

Notes on prices:
