Apartment in Siracuse, Sicily, Italy - Close To Historic Sites And Good Shops

I live in England but spend as much time as possible at my apartment. It is home from home and has all the necessary amenities for a wonderful holiday. I am trying to learn Italian as there is less English spoken here than other parts of Italy. I live amongst Italians and have made many friends here. I especially like it when my neighbours and the local shops, including the market, recognise and acknowledge me every time and make me feel so very much at home.
Jan purchased this Apartment in 2003
Why Jan chose Syracuse
I first visited Siracusa in 2001 and did not know about Ortigia but when I first drove over the bridge into Ortigia I fell in love with it. It is wonderful, full of beautiful old buildings Ortigia oozes history and it never ceases to amaze me. You live amongst real people, doing their daily work. The fish market is real and alive and just sitting at a local coffee bar you can capture every aspect of local life whilst watching the world go by. There is something to suit everyone, eating a meal in a romantic setting overlooking the sea, swimming from the rocks, shopping in designer shops or the market, relaxing on a beach or visiting fabulous historical sites. Horse drawn carriages, cobblestone streets where you can wander for hours and lovely churches to admire. This is real Italy.
What makes this Apartment unique
My bedroom and lounge overlook the sea and I love to watch the sunrise in the mornings from my bed then eat breakfast on my terrace, whilst still being able to see the water. To be able to shop at the market on a daily basis for fresh fish, fruit and vegetables and to banter with the shopkeepers whilst being offered samples of their foods. To walk to the rocks and swim for an hour or two and if it is too hot to go down again in the evening for another swim. There are also many historical opportunities ranging from the Greek ampitheatre, even watching plays there to the catacombs and fabulous archeaological sites both in Ortigia and within walking distance. There is also Interbus direct from Catania airport to Siracusa which runs several times a day and is only €5.70.
Wonderfully situated Appartment
The appartment was in a perfect position for my daughter and I and is easily walkable to everywhere in Ortigia. It was very well equipped and comfortable. Jan is also in the process of re painting it all and the new windows look great. Parking directly outside the appartment is difficult but a car park is a couple of minutes walk away is easily accessed and always had spaces. Lynette, who let us in to the appartment, was lovely. She was a font of knowledge and was always there if we needed any help or advice. The views and sunrises were spectacular. Ortigia is a fantastic place. I would highly recommend Jan's appartment to anyone. I certainly hope to come back.
Thank you Michaela for such a great review, I am so pleased you had a such a wonderful time at my apartment and I agree totally, Lynette is my secret weapon. Such a fabulous lady and as you say a font of local information.
Great place to stay near the centre of Siracusa
The apartment was well equipped and in a great location, on the edge of the old town, within easy walking distance of the main sights. We managed to find free parking close by on each evening. Sunrise through the window in the morning was spectacular!
Thank you so much Alan, we enjoyed hosting you. The sun rising every morning seen through both the master bedroom window and the lounge, is one of my favourite sights too. I am pleased you found my apartment well equipped, its my home from home where I spend a lot of time. The location is perfect and free parking is an absolute bonus.
Fantastic Getaway in Ortigia
We spent a little over a week in this apartment in Ortigia. The apartment itself is fully equipped and absolutely charming, with a cottage feel. It also has a wonderful, unobstructed view of the sea. The location cannot be beat for anyone wanting to explore old Ortegia, or just wanting to spend time relaxing immersed in what seems like another world. We spent many wonderful afternoons just strolling around the island, going to the local market, or enjoying a drink or meal at one of the many wonderful restaurants in Ortegia. You are also just a short walk from the bus and train stations in Siracusa, which provide ready access to much else that Sicily has to offer. Would highly recommend.
Location location location
This spot couldn't have been better for our sea/city trip! We could walk everywhere, we grocery-shopped, we cooked in the apartment, we watched movies. It was super!
(and when we forgot our cell phone, Lynette met us at the apartment to pick it back up: and she got us to a tire repair place after our flat tire -- above and beyond the call of duty!)
Hello Laurie, I am so pleased you enjoyed your stay and the dvd's too. I love it there, just a little walk around the corner to the market, then bringing it home to cook and enjoy. As you rightly say location, location, location is so very important. Lynette, is my secret weapon, she is amazing and is an absolute bonus for my guests, and yes Lynette always goes that extra mile. Thank you so much for choosing my apartment and we would welcome you anytime again.
Kind regards, Jan
Lovely homely apartment
Myself and husband enjoyed a two week stay at this lovely apartment. Excellent service by owner and team. The view is stunning and it is in the heart of the old town within minutes of everything needed. There are numerous bars and restaurants all around. We did not hire a car as there is no parking, we used public transport to visit other towns and the tourist information office organise trips. There are no sandy beaches and most swimming is from rocks or man made platforms, there is some pebbly areas where less confident people could paddle from.
I haven't given 5 stars as I think the apartment is due a bit of TLC. Over all would recommend.
Thank you so much Lorraine for your review. I am so happy that you enjoyed the views and Ortigia, I think its a truly amazing place. My apartment is due to be redecorated within the next few months as there will be a new facade in place, new windows and some updating inside. Thank you for choosing my apartment and hope to see you again.
Kind regards, Jan Sheehy
Food lovers heaven
We spent a week at Jan's apartment in May and found it as described on the listing and spotlessly clean. Amazingly convenient for the fabulous market which was less than 5 mins walk away plus you can arrive to the door by taxi and the little city shuttle bus stops on the road outside which is very convenient for going up to the Greek ruins or the railway station for trips further afield.
Lynette was charming and was there if any problems arose which they didn't. We know the city well and have spent time there before on a number of occasions. You can swim from the bathing platforms just around the corner and there are two small supermarkets within 5 minutes walk of the flat.
Try Trattoria da Pietro for Sunday lunch with the locals and go for all the antipasti - raw fish platter, octopus salad, mussels in white wine, fritto misto etc. Cooking at home and eating on the terrace also a joy when you have a such a market close by.
Jenni and Marius - Liguria, Italy
You can both swim and sunbathe from the rocks a five minute walk away and during the summer there are nearby lidos. Boat rides to nearby beauty spots are available, a 10 minute walk away. The local bus AST, takes approx 30 mins to Fontaine Bianche and Arenealla which have full facilities, sunloungers, cover, activities and bars. There are other nearby places to swim from such as Ognina a short drive away.
Catania Airport is the closest airport to Ortigia approx l hr away and Palermo is approximately a 3 hour drive. Interbus has a direct service from both Palermo Centrale and Catania Airport into Siracusa bus stn, from there it is a 10 min taxi to the apartment. Ortigia is best experienced on foot but to explore Sicily more there are car hire companies located at the airport or in Ortigia which rent cars on a daily basis. There is also ample public transport, bus and train.
Ortigia has many impressive historic areas especially Piazza del Duomo which is surrounded by Baroque architecture. The Neapolis Archaeological Park where both the impressive Greek Theatre and the Roman Ampitheatre can be seen are within a 15 minute drive or a 30 minute walk. Noto is approximately 30 minute drive south and has many beautiful restored Baroque buildings. The Valley of the Temples at Agrigento would take approximately ninety minutes and Mount Etna is about an hour north of Ortigia.
The nearest local grocery shop is within 100 metres of the apartment, turn right into Via Vittoria Veneto and it is on your left. The local fish market is open daily up until l.00pm selling an amazing variety of freshly caught fish, locally produced cheeses, wines and vegetables and is just a 5 minute walk towards Piazza Pancali. Ortigia has many wonderful restaurants and busy vibrant bars, and there are both local and designer shops within the town. There are ample cash points, banks and public transport and horse drawn carriages.
