About JD Ross

Hi, we're JD & Meredith! We bought the Sunburst Cabin with Meredith's parents as a getaway and mountain retreat and have recently renovated the entire house. We love this cabin like our home and want to share it with others since we can't use it full-time. Our 2 daughters love the flat back yard, the creek that runs across the property behind the house, and watching the birds flutter around all the bird feeders on the back deck.

JD Ross purchased this cabin in 2015

Why JD Ross chose Boone

We chose this property for its secluded feeling, while still being a short drive to all the amenities of the High Country. Minutes from Boone, Blowing Rock, Valle Crucis, Banner Elk, the Blue Ridge Parkway, ski resorts, hiking, fishing, and more...it's really in the perfect location. It has a creek that nearly circles the back of the cabin with trout darting in out of the shadows, and a small waterfall that constantly plays a soundtrack that lets you know you're in the mountains.

What makes this cabin unique

Sitting in the Sunburst Cabin, you look out every window and see nothing but trees, rhododendron, birds, and the hills surrounding the house. Meredith says it's "like being inside a terrarium". There are other homes around and you can even see a few through the trees, but it still feels like you're all alone.

A lovely stay

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I had a wonderful stay at the Sunburst Cabin. It's beautifully decorated, scrupulously clean, and thoughtfully appointed. And the setting, with the stream running through the backyard, just can't be beat. We highly recommend this property.

Wonderful property, great location

  • 5 of 5

The cabin is terrific and the back deck is amazing. I could have sat out there for days... Quick and easy drive to get to tons of restaurants. Owners were easy to reach and helpful with all questions. Our 13 year old loved having a room upstairs to herself. Thank you and we'll be back!

Perfect location for our family vacation in Boone

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here in June 2018 with our 1 and 3 year old kids. It was perfect for us! The home was beautiful and so clean, and felt secluded despite being so centrally located. It was well-decorated and just felt comfortable! Everything we could have needed was there - gates on the stairs, plenty of kitchen items, plastic plates for the kids, paper towels, and so on. It really felt like a little home away from home. We LOVED eating out on the porch - I don't think we ate inside even once. We loved watching the birds, chimpmunks, and squirrels - no TV was even requested by our 3 year old! In the evenings, we enjoyed a quiet glass of wine on the porch, listening to the creek and waterfall.

The kids loved the property, which had some grass to play on, and the creek was good for them to splash in and throw a few rocks!

It is perfectly located, with a grocery store maybe 5 minutes away and Boone just 10 minutes. We LOVED Valle Crucis park - it has a playground, big fields, and Wautauga creek there is fantastic for kids to splash around in. Next year we plan to pick up some tubes from Walmart and let the kids float a bit at the park, which is what all the other kids there were doing! Linville Falls was about 45 minutes away, Grandfather Mountain (a big hit with the kids) was 30 minutes, Tweetsie Railroad was about 20 minutes. If traveling with kids, I'd recommend Lost Province Brewing Co in downtown Boone - they had fantastic pizza and the place was loud enough no one even heard our excited kids!

We look forward to a future stay at Sunburst Cabin!

Perfect Cabin

  • 5 of 5

This cabin was perfect for a family of four with two little kids! Our boys, 5 and 7, loved the upstairs loft and the property had lots of fun things for them to find hidden in the outdoors. The back porch was fantastic for watching birds and chipmunks. It was a private cabin in the woods but close to everything we wanted to do! Tweestie railroad, Foggy Mountain Gem Mine, Grandfather Mountain... Thanks for the local magazines too!

The cabin was well-stocked with utensils and cookware. They even had place settings (and toys!) for little ones. If you are looking for a great place to stay in Boone, you couldn't find a better spot!

Enchanting and blissful

  • 5 of 5

Our 2nd stay at the Sunburst was as relaxing and stimulating as the 1st. There are so many little things, small details, and personal touches that make this cozy home so special to my young family aside from the excellent location, cleanliness, design, and affordability. The Sunburst has become synonymous with our summer vacation and, God willing, we'll be back again next year!

Still Cozy, Clean and Convenient!!

  • 5 of 5

This was our second trip to Sunburst cabin and it was just the same as last year - Clean and well maintained, super convenient to both Boone and Blowing Rock and the owners are accommodating and friendly. Our 4 year old loves it as much as we do, there is lots to explore.

Location

Nearest Airport
95 Miles
Charlotte-Douglas Int'l Airport
Car: necessary

Sunburst Cabin is the perfect location to venture out to Downtown Boone (10 min), Downtown Blowing Rock (15 min), Grandfather Mountain, Ski Resorts (Appalachian, Sugar Mtn, Ski Beech, Hawksnest), Valle Crucis (15 min), Hiking, Fly Fishing, Shopping, Leaf Watching, and Mountain Biking.

Our favorite family-friendly things to do include Tweetsie Railroad, the "Tot-Lot" Playground and Greenway Trails in Boone, the Watauga Aquatic Center (especially when it's cold outside), the Valle Crucis Community Park (playground, walking path, river to splash in), Mast General Stores in Boone and Valle Crucis, and the park in Downtown Blowing Rock.

For fun nights out, our favorites include CoBo Sushi, The Local, and Lost Province Brewing Co (and wood-fired pizza!), all in Boone. Bistro Roca is our favorite in Blowing Rock. And close to the cabin, The Gamekeeper is an excellent, unique restaurant featuring different game meats. Appalachian Mountain Brewery has great beer and live music on weekends.

For shopping, Blowing Rock has an excellent Outlet Mall (Tanger Outlets) and lots of clothing, antique, and accessory boutiques Downtown. Downtown Boone has pottery studios, outdoor clothing/gear outfitters (Mast General Store, Footsloggers), Appalachian State Univ fan merchandise, bike shops, and Antique Stores (Farmer's Hardware and Antiques on Howard).
