Born and raised into the Pyrenees Orientales, I moved to the UK where I met my husband. We spent 20 years working in the UK before buying our house in St Marsal. We now both work in the restaurant business providing Catalan and Traditional French food.
Peter or Florence Watson purchased this villa in 2001
Our criteria for a property were exactly met by Mas al Parry ... Secluded, 4 bedrooms, pool and open fire - yet in walking distance of a village with a shop and restaurants. Tranquil. Stunning views. What more could we ask for.
Whether we want to go to the ski resorts or to the sea there is nothing too far away.
To relax on the terrace looking across the Vallespir valley is pure bliss. Also, the pleasure of taking a late night swim and looking at the stars is breathtaking.
me and my family are just back from our lovely holiday in Saint Marsal, and the beautiful villa owned by Peter & Florence. the villa is stunning and the views from the bedrooms windows are breath taking. my husband, me and my in laws had the whole villa to ourselves, and it has everything in it to make you feel like your at home. all the rooms are beautifully decorated and have every modern appliance available. the surronding hill side is iimpressive and brilliant for walking and cycling, both of which we did.
the villa has its own pool and is a heavenly place when the weather is so hot.
the local village is about 2 miins away from the villa, down the mountain and the local shop stocks everything you need so that you dont need to go into the main town at the foot of the hill. Peter and Florence are brilliant hosts, and incredibly welcoming.
My family and i will definitely be returning next year and cant wait to just chill out away from it all. i highly recommend this villa and location, for a heavenly holiday up a mountain almost in heaven !!!
i have just returned from my holiday in heaven. my husband, myself and our inlaws arrived on sunday 2nd september, late in the evening and crashed out immediately. when we woke in the morning i opened the shutters to see the most stunning view across the mountains. the view actually takes your breath away. the villa itself is really huge, and lovely. it has everything you need to make it feel like home from home. Peter & Florence were absolutely brilliant and made us all feel really welcome. the grounds of the villa were spacious and the pool is a god send in the baking heat. saint marsal is positioned almost at the top of the mountain and is not for the faint hearted. the local shop sells everything you need for you holiday, fresh bread, milk and supplies and everyone was very welcome. i would highly recommend it to family and friends and will be going back there again next year.
We spent a very restful holiday in a stunning location. Beautiful hills, mountains and valleys. Easy walking nearby and high peaks further afield.
The gite is very comfortable, tastefully decorated and it was extremely well equipped. The views from the terrace are amazing both during the day and in the evening when the stars and moon were vibrant. Even in September the pool was very inviting.
Peter and Florence are very friendly and helpful, particularly when we were delayed due the European General Strike.
The village is pretty with a well stocked shop and bakery. The village bistro in the village square is part of the Bistro du Pays and well worth a visit. The village auberge is being refurbished for opening in 2011.
The whole area is extemely picturesque. The market in Ceret, on a Saturday is highly recommended and as the wines of the area. The museum of modern art in Ceret is also worth visiting.
Eus is a very charming village which is a 'must see'.
I have no hesitation is recommending the gite and have already to friends. Ideal for friends and family who want to be together (in the villa and gite) but can also find other activities nearby when they don't!.
Having just returned from our holiday, I am delighted to report that you will find a warm and friendly welcome at Mas Al Parry and hosts, Florence and Peter. We were very late arriving yet Peter and Florence were both there to greet us and show us around the house. The house is lovely and comfortable - in particular the kitchen is the best equipped we have ever had in France. The views are spectacular, and from the track to the property you can see right down to the coast south of Perpignan! The terrace is ideal for al fresco dining with a huge table, plentiful chairs and stunning views of the mountains bordering France and Spain. The pool is lovely with a poolside shower, loads of comfy sun-loungers and substantial parasols, which keep you cool in the 30 degree plus temperatures!
The drive along the road from Amelie-Les-Bains ( or the village on the other side of the mountain; I can't remember its name) is not for the faint-hearted but the views up and down the valleys are spectacular and you might also be greeted by the odd goat or two, wending its way down for milking. Charming!
When we stayed (August 2010) the auberge in the village had closed, which was a shame, and the other restaurant was quite expensive with a rather bizarre menu, but the village itself is charming. The little shop in the village is excellent and has everything you might need (bread, cheese, fresh vegetables, wine etc) for quite reasonable prices; the staff were very friendly indeed!
Tip: explore the immediate area rather than opt for longer trips to Andorra, Carcassone or Barcelona. There are plenty of places to visit without having to spend hours in the car.
All in all an excellent property in a beautiful area. Thoroughly recommended!! Thank you.
We spent two weeks in Mas al Parry and we had a wonderful time.
There were 10 of us so we rented the gite with the villa.
A minus point for this house is, that it is a long drive up and down if you want to go anywhere. It takes you half an hour by car.
You do need a car if you rent this villa. It really is "away from it all".
The kitchen is very modern and so are the bathrooms, (massage showers).
The house is a bit dusty and it smells a bit smokey but not to a point that it is annoying. Like I said, we had a wonderful time and we had 5 teenagers with us. That says a lot.
Peter and Florence are very nice people and were very helpful when we ran out of water. This happens every now and then. So make sure you have bottles of (tap) water in the fridge.
The towels you get are magnificent. Nice and big beach towels are included.
The surroundings are stunning. The villages are pretty. St. Marsal is beautiful but small. There's one shop and one restaurant.
Ceret is beautiful. Make sure you go the marked on saturday.
The beaches at fantastic. Wide with stoney sand and a wonderful sea.
To make a wrap...I recommend Mas al Parry.
The weather is all that stopped this having a Five rating. The first week had storms of all types including an electrical storm that took out the internet and all of the power to the villa. The instructions for getting the power back on were clear enough, but the access to the boxes that housed the switches outside the building could have had friendlier access. The owners were very helpfull and friendly. They phoned to keep us posted on the repair of the internet and with suggestions of where to go, as the Tour De France was in the area and causing major congestion.
We made the drive to Barcelona and Andorra where we had major experiences for different reasons. The Andorra trip was amazing with the scenery. It was trully brearhtaking, but on the return you realise how dark it is on mountain roads with no other lighting. Barcelona was an experience for another reason. We were victims of a new scam. A moped with a passenger, follows you in heavy traffic, and when stopped the passenger gets off of the moped and punctures your tyre, they then go off to reappear as a solo on a moped to tell you that you have a flat. They then offer to help change the wheel or call out a mechanic for you. We were in the RAC so called them for assistance, but we still had to buy new tyres, and they are not cheap in Barcelona. The scam was explained to me by the tyre fitting manager as it is quite prevelant.
The villa itself is well appointed, and the best part of each day was getting into really comfortable beds. I slept really well, and had in spite of the other problems, a very relaxing and enjoyable holiday. Peter and Florence were great hosts, and this is the second time I have used the villa in 6 years.
Mas Al Parry is 900 Metres from the village of Saint Marsal set in the foothills of the eastern Pyrenees.
The village has a local shop with freshly baked bread, an auberge with restaurant, and another restaurant in the village centre. There is also a public Boules area and tennis court.
Nearby towns are Ceret with its modern art museum, Amelie-les-Bains which is a spa town and Prades. There is also easy access to Perpignan, Spain and the beach each approximately an hour away.
For those wishing to venture a little further there is also Carcasonne, Barcelona(Spain), and the Principality of Andorra within 2 hours.
