Overview

About the property

2 Bedrms, 2 Baths, Sleeps 6-8*, secluded hilltop setting. Ocean & Mountain Views

Oceanfront home, swimming pool and lanai overlooking Matanchen Bay, the northern point of Pacific Mexico's tourist destination the Riviera Nayarit.

Secluded and private, this spacious 2,500 sq. ft., cliff-side home is 4-stories featuring stunning ocean and mountain views with high speed internet/WiFi.

Two spacious and comfortable bedrooms share the big bathroom which has bathtub/shower and a lovely Juliet balcony overlooking the beach with mountain views. The bedrooms share a wide covered terrace with a commanding ocean view and outdoor seating for 5. The Hummingbird Bedroom (sleeps 4 max.) with a queen-size bed and a matrimonial/full-size bed, a private balcony with mountain, ocean and garden views. The Jaguar Bedroom has a queen-size bed and daybed (sleeps 3 max.).

A second full bathroom and an additional daybed are located off the main floor living area. The serene sound of the ocean is heard throughout the house.

High ceilings, eclectic art, antiques and a funky furniture collection create a distinct and unique retreat for guests seeking relaxation. The oceanfront location--set 100 feet above the beach provides splendid, clear views of the Pacific coast. Swimmer-friendly local Matanchen Beach with its charming palm thatched ramadas offers shady seaside dining with deliciously fresh catch of the day, cold drinks and an ocean breeze. Guests can either drive or make the easy 7-10 minute walk to the beach from the house.

Located in Aticama, Nayarit, a quaint and friendly village, pop. 1,500 just off the beaten tourist track, it is a great getaway in authentic, old world Mexico. This rental is ideal for birders, writers, getaways, or for romance and renewal. Not suitable for small children (under 8 years old) as the pool is not enclosed and the steep height along cliff edge is not child proof.

The home's setting is backed by a one-and-a-half-acre, organic mango orchard and tropical garden of bananas, pineapples, star fruit/carambola and other exotic seasonal fruits and palms. The multi-story house is open air in design with numerous screened windows to catch the sea breeze and highlight the views. Plenty of outdoor living space for relaxation, meditation or entertainment including a pool, lanai with lounge chairs, a tree shaded patio off the living room and covered terraces on each floor—all with wonderful views of Matanchen Bay and coastline. The rooftop terrace offers a pair of hammocks to enjoy 360° views of the ocean, jungle clad mountains, beach and surrounding countryside.

Spacious, comfortable and eclectically furnished, the house sleeps up to eight* and offers two full bathrooms with additional outdoor showers available for after the beach, as well as poolside.

Enjoy the peace of mind and convenience of purified drinking water from every indoor tap with an in-house Ultra-Violet water purification system. Four, high bar stools for sitting round the kitchen's wood island, a gas range, electric coffee maker, toaster, waffle iron, blender and assorted and essential cooking utensils. Ceiling fans and screened windows throughout the house; all-cotton bed and bath linens provided. Cook as you wish or meals may be ordered in advance. Maid service included for week long stays or more, additional cleaning days and meal preparation are an option.

Grocery stocking service is available with advance notice, please inquire with owner.

The gated property grounds are approximately one and half acres and full of bird activity. The garden surrounding the house is lush with tropical plants and palms--at times intoxicatingly fragrant with scented jasmine, white ginger, mock orange and golden chalice vine. Guests enjoy seasonal tropical fruit straight from the garden including bananas, pineapples, coconuts, papayas, guavas, avocados (Nov/Dec), mangos (May/June/July), passion fruit, starfruit/carambola.

A house library, dominoes, and board games e.g. Scrabble, chess set, puzzles, playing cards and more are available for entertainment. With no TV, the "real world" cannot intrude on this idyllic setting. Evening time is magical with owl hoots and fireflies brightening the night, a full moonrise over the mountains, or its silvery reflection as it sinks over the dark ocean. At Casa Babina, celestial drama plays out like theatre, guests enjoy rose hued sunsets, perhaps glimpsing "the green flash" at sunset. Star gazing and bird watching are excellent.

Activities nearby include beach swimming, strolling, fishing, surfing, hiking, trek to El Cora waterfall, shell collecting or simply a good book in the hammock. Visit Aticama's Cultural Center comprising an art gallery, public library with WiFi and movies to lend. Each Sunday morning during tourist season from mid-November to April, a lively community market (or tianguis) is held in the courtyard of the Cultural Center, where locals and visitors gather for fresh homemade food, local, shade grown coffee, fresh fruits and vegetables, tropical plants and flowers, handicrafts and secondhand goods. The nearby Aticama Community Museum displays a good collection of indigenous artifacts found in or around the Matanchen area, and historical exhibitions, it is also home to the free monthly spay/neuter clinic for cats and dogs providing a wonderful community service for the Matanchen area.

Summertime in the tropics (June-Sept) is dramatic, humid and green, it's also mango harvest time and monsoon season with fantastic thunderstorms mostly at night. Inquire about our special green and shoulder season rates. September is customarily big surf season.

About Trilby Babin

Austin will always be home, but I am spending more and more time in Aticama, Mexico on Nayarit's Pacific coast. In 2001, I fell fast for this sleepy coastal village full of smiling faces. Loving all the sweet fresh fruit, I planted a garden of my own and seven years later built my own home. With the Pacific Ocean at the forefront and the Sierra Madre Mountains as a backdrop, wildlife abounds on land, air and sea. This region takes its birdlife seriously with world-class birding opportunities and a migratory bird festival held annually. Though times are changing, donkeys, dogs, and chickens still stroll the cobbled streets or loll in the shade. Aticama offers visitors a warm embrace and the best of traditional Old Mexico.

Trilby Babin purchased this estate in 2007

Why Trilby Babin chose Nayarit

Unsurpassed 360° views of the Pacific Ocean, Matanchen Bay, miles of walkable sandy coastline, and tropical jungle with the Sierra Madre Mountains as a backdrop. No resorts in this authentic Mexican getaway.

Exceptionally long surf break in Matanchen Bay. The mostly low key tranquil village scene of Aticama livens up around festival time with colorful parades, rodeos, dances and crazy fun fireworks at the seaside plaza, e.g. Mexican national holidays, Navidad (Christmas), Semana Santa (Easter), and village feast days. Aticama is a great place to practice your Spanish, locals are friendly and welcoming. Mostly dark skies make for good star gazing. There is an amazing variety of migratory, neo-tropical birds to see year-round e.g. citroline trogon, rufous and hermit hummingbirds, gnatcatchers, whistling ducks, gray hawks, buntings, magnificent frigates, piliated woodpeckers, San Blas jays, chacalacas and plenty more to add to your list. Wake gently to the happy wren's song.

What makes this estate unique

The setting of Casa Babina offers guests an opportunity to experience the endearing Mexico of bygone days from our comfortably modern retreat. For guests less inclined to exploration, there are expansive views from the cliffside vantage point (100 ft/30 mt) above Matanchen Beach.Early mornings you'll see fishermen bringing in their nets. Bird activity is abundant and easy to spot in the surrounding treetops or circling above the property as frigate birds, hawks, pelicans, egrets and the like rise and glide along the thermal updrafts of the cliff below. The historic port city of San Blas is known to birders and surfers. Artists, writers, and travelers visit the Matanchen area to escape the hustle of city life.

Unplugged or not, either way is an adventure to be treasured.

Trilby's house

  • 5 of 5

Trilby is a wonderful, sweet, gentile lady, who has a wonderful estancia overlooking the ocean, surrounded by mango and avocado trees.

The house is comfortable and welcoming, with a fascinating garden that is s full of beautiful flowers and herbs, the lawn is green and bordered by pineapple plants and papayas, with a great lap pool positioned slightly above the house, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The patio is comfortable and surrounded by trees and the garden, within easy view of the ocean to the west and jungle inland to the east.

The kitchen is great for cooking, with dining at the center island or her large handmade dining table only steps away.

The nearby beach has a number of restaurants with good seafood and a nice selection of Mexican cervezas.

This is the real Mexico with great people. It's out of the way and unbelievably beautiful, charming and relaxing. We originally intended to be there two days, then extended it to a week, then decided to spend our entire vacation there, and we can't wait to return; it's that nice.

Loved this grand casa!

  • 5 of 5

This beautiful spacious home sits on a hilltop in the authentic and charming village of Aticama. Sweeping views of Matachen Bay and it's 22 kilometers of beaches are spectacular especially from the top floor, which is an open air living space great for chilling in a hammock, practicing yoga, and sunset cocktail hour. The house itself has an open floor plan: downstairs houses living room, dinning room, kitchen, daybed, and full bathroom. Upstairs you'll find a delightful bedroom called The Taco shack and two other sleeping areas, full bathroom, and large deck for bird and beach watching.

Hostess Trilby is delightful and is more than willing to share her what to do info, which might include jungle boat rides, waterfalls, trips to San Blas and even invitations to local parties.

I plan to return twice a year for extended stays!
