My husband and I plus our two children found Villa des Remparts to be everything they said it was. The location was absolutely amazing as we had the beautiful views, easy parking all in the centre of Dinan. This year we decided to immerse ourselves in French culture by choosing a location in the centre of an historic town. We much preferred that to being stuck out in the countryside where we needed the car to go anywhere. We loved to walk along the ramparts every day as the entrance was right outside our front door. At the back of the villa is the very steep Rue du Petit Fort that goes down to the old port. Here we discovered our favourite restaurant, Le Cottage. It was very affordable and full of local French and Brits who live in the area, so it must be good! The bedrooms in the villa were delightful and quiet. We were very glad they each had ceiling fans as that made sleeping comfortable especially as some of the evenings were quite warm. They have a "Welcome" notebook in the kitchen that contained everything we needed to know about operating appliances as well as suggestions on where to eat, shop and some fabulous walks nearby. We hired bikes and cycled for miles along the river discovering quaint hamlets and old mills. We have already booked two weeks next summer!

Great gite in an ideal location

  • 5 of 5

We had a great week in this gite.

The fixtures and furnishings inside the gite are of a good standard. The kitchen is well equiped, the lounge is comfortable and the bedrooms are light and airy.

The best aspect of the gite is it's great location. it is in the centre of Dinam and a short walk to the port. Dinan was a great holiday base, an extreamly attractive town with a very relaxed atmosphere.

We would reccomend the gite, we enjoyed our week here.

A lovely house in the centre of historic Dinan

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for a week in late March in this house, a family of four with two boys aged 9 and 7.

The house is two minutes walk to the centre of historic Dinan, with its creperies, and lovely half timbered houses, and five minutes walk (down a steep hill) to the riverside port, and countryside walks along the river. There are a couple of supermarkets 5-10 minutes walk away in Dinan, which means there is no need for a car unless you want to explore the countryside.

Our most enjoyable day was when we hired a riverboat at the port, and spent half a day going up and down the river, in the middle of the lovely Breton countryside.

The house itself is very well put together, you can tell that the owners love it and spend a lot of time there. The kitchen was very well equipped (although quite small) and the book collection was excellent - all four of us found a good book to read.

All our dealings with Bruce was by post and email - he sent us a key and directions to the house, which worked out very well, and it was lovely to have a bottle of wine and some bread and jam waiting for us after a long day of train travel.

'Dinan is without doubt the most charming medieval hill town and river port in Brittany' - Charles Dickens 1846

Within its spectacular medieval stone ramparts, Dinan's beautifully preserved half-timbered buildings and narrow cobbled streets, restaurants and local craft shops attract over a half million visitors year round, second only to Mont St. Michel nearby. Brittany's beaches, golf courses, romantic islands and Pink Granite Coast are just minutes to the north, but relax in Dinan and take a stroll along the stone ramparts with their commanding views of the old town and countryside ending at the 14C Chateau and Jardin des Anglais. Visit the ancient monasteries, museums, and unique artisan shops that Dinan is famous for or walk down to the old Port of Dinan and enjoy the fresh seafood in the local waterside restaurants. You will soon discover why Dickens found Dinan so remarkable.
