3.5 stars for location. It is located on a lagoon on the southern end of Siesta Key. That is the quietest and most private end of the island, and this house is part of a small association of homes. They have access via a bridge across the lagoon to a private beach house that opens onto the Gulf beach. It was the perfect spot for us, since we prefer a natural setting away from hustle and bustle. In addition, its pool area is pleasant and we used it constantly. Be aware, however, that the beach is not the same quality as the world-famous Siesta Key Beach at the north end of the island.
BUT -- 2 stars for condition of the property. The house itself is in poor condition. Paint is peeling outside and in, windows are old and some are not functional, bathrooms are small and furniture and linens are very shabby. Rooms were fairly large but some bedrooms have no closets and the lighting is poor. Landscaping is overgrown, especially the bordering mangroves along the lagoon. They were untrimmed and restricted the views of the lagoon.
When we arrived, we were shocked to find the house dirty and disorganized. Windows were dirty, baseboards and corners were caked with dirt, dishes in the cupboards still had food sticking on them, the coffeepot had grounds on the bottom, kitchen drawers with utensils and silverware were full of crumbs and dust. Food was spattered all over the kitchen walls and ceiling. Bed linens did not look particularly clean. Bathrooms were filthy. A shower curtain (actually only a blue liner) in one bath was torn and hanging off the rod. Dead ants and roaches were in corners and behind furniture. There were cobwebs on bookshelves and along the ceiling and spiders in the shower stall. Mini-blinds were broken and hanging. A partial cup of McDonald’s cocoa was on the table at the front door. A skylight in one of the bedrooms had filled with water and was full of green algae.
We contacted the rental agency immediately after arriving. They said that they would send cleaners out the next day – but in order to feel comfortable overnight, we washed sheets and blankets and vacuumed. Even though cleaners came the next day, their cleaning was perfunctory at best, and we were still uncomfortable with the condition of the house.
Overall, while this was a good location, the house needs to be updated badly.
The house is nice and Alex and Paul went out of their way to make us feel right at home. When the DVD player broke, they brought over a new one that day. Would love to stay again sometime. Thanks Alex for a great vacation. The Morgans
