Casa Palaga is an impressive traditional house on our large 90-hectare natural estate. The 200-year-old house was restored from the ground up in 2007, and adapted to its current needs. The many original fixtures, such as decks and doors, combine with original furniture to impart a splendid testimony of the old handiwork of Maramureș. With its floor area of 180 sq.m, it offers plenty of space in its generous rooms. There are very few houses in Maramureș that are this large.
If you are looking for peace and quiet, you will find them here -- along with some inspiration as well. The surrounding natural landscape is extraordinarily beautiful. The pleasant ambience of the house creates a place where you can relax and have fun.
Casa Palaga is an ideal point of departure for nature lovers, hunters, and hikers who want to explore the pristine surroundings. Excursions to monasteries and historical wooden churches are ideal destinations, as well as the museums and markets in Sighethu and the surrounding villages.
The culturally authentic house has been built with plenty of style. Original furnishings are combined with antique pieces brought from Germany and France. Old Romanian art and hunting trophies complete the interior.
The ground floor has two living rooms, a kitchen, corridor, and guest bathroom. The upper level contains a lounge with a library, two large bedrooms, and a shower bath. Casa Palaga is furnished with solid oak flooring. Two traditional masonry stoves on the ground floor provide very comfortable warmth. The bedrooms on the upper level are heated with fireplaces. The necessary firewood is prepared beforehand and included in the price.
A housekeeper can provide support with any concerns. From the washing to shopping and even an evening barbecue, Carmen is there with advice and assistance.
The surrounding meadows and the entire countryside is cut yearly by hand. Because of this, rare and protected plants can be found, such as orchids, wild gladiolas, carnivorous plants, cottongrass, and many others. The fauna is also impressive, with bears, wolves, lynx, deer, roe, wild cats, otters, eagles, and a variety of other rare birds, such as hoopoes and orioles. An unbelievable diversity of butterfly and beetle species abounds in the area.
Hikes (with a guide if desired), carriage rides, hunting and riding are just some of the leisure activities that you can participate in here.
With Botiza Fond, our community foundation, we support ecological, social, and cultural projects in Botiza. We would be happy to let you know more.
We have wandered Romania for twenty years and have fulfilled one of our dreams here.
Lilli Steier purchased this chateau / country house in 2007
The house provides a living testament to the handiwork of Maramureș.
Our guests tell us that it is far, far more beautiful than pictures and words can describe.
An historic house restored, full equipped, maintained and managed to the highest standard in every detail, near to the village of Botiza. The location is beautiful and secluded without being isolated from local amenities. The house's German owners have a profound long-standing engagement with the local community, among which visitors will find a deeply warm welcome.
We have had the most surprising Easter ever! Steping into the house Palaga has been like steping into a fairytale. Firstly, the house is located in the middle of nature, where you are surrounded by bird songs and rabbits jumping around. More to it, the view is fantastic, mountains covered with snow can be seen and right in front of the lodge, a beautiful wooden monastery - a jewel of the Maramures architecture!
The house is decorated in a warm traditional style, and every little corner is created to inspire comfort, relaxation and designed to feed your soul. We have been amazed to find this in the heart of Maramures mountains, with all comfort one would need, including the most impressive collection of spices for the most demanding 'chef' :).
We higlhy reccomend it either for a short 3-4 nights stay of for long holidays - there a lot of beautiful places to visit around.
The hosts/owners are very firendly, helpful and fun. We look forward to going back again!
We stayed 4 days at Casa Palaga and we were very pleased. A relaxing traditional house with all the confort of modern accommodation. We enjoyed the breakfast with local products on the table right outside the house, watching the beautiful view over Botiza valley. We highly recommend Casa Palaga if you want to taste and feel Maramures traditions with beautiful surroundings.
We were completely overwhelmed by Casa Palaga. It's a beautiful 200 year old villa, sympathetically furnished complete with an array of interesting art and books. Lilli and Volker made us feel very welcome on our arrival.
Despite this , perhaps the main attraction is the location - Maramures feels like a lost world despite being in the EU. From the house you can see rolling hills, mountains, even a nearby Monastery! Then there's the people, sometimes it feels as if everyone is working in the fields and nearby neighbours provide milk, cheese and other local produce.
All in all, we felt very privileged to stay there for a short while. We wish you all the best for the future and hope to see you again!

The estate, which contains the four holiday homes, is located in northwest Romania just above the village of Botiza the district (or judeţ, in Romanian) of Maramureș. Its altitude is some 700 m above sea level. The Hungarian border is situated 150 km away, while it is 30 km to Ukraine. Sighetu Marmației is the nearest city (about 38 km away). The nearest airports are in Baia Mare (also known by its German name, Frauenbach, and about 80 km away) or Cluj (German Klausenburg, 170 km). Nearby: Visit Rodna and the Maramureș National Park at a distance of 15 km as the crow flies.
The 90-hectare estate is a regional treasure with an unbelievable array of flora and fauna. This estate is unique in Maramureș. All of our visitors are impressed with its extraordinary location in front of the Schimbarea la Față monastery, which was named for the changing of the seasons from summer to autumn. A lovely view of the mountains of Ukraine and Rodna range in the distance evoke a feeling of vastness, wilderness, and peace.
