had a wonderful time

  • 5 of 5

I really enjoyed my stay at Direen Cottage. The cottage was clean and spacious. I loved curling up and getting cozy with a book in the master bedroom. There's a window seat that overlooks a pretty hedge and you can hear the creek near the house (I slept with the windows open and fell asleep to the sounds of the creek). I think that was probably my favorite spot in the cottage. I spent a lot of evenings there.

The cottage is situated conveniently with quick and easy access to Cloghane, Brandon, and Castlegregory. This made it easy to explore the area and easy to swing by between adventures for a quick lunch. I told a friend that one evening my face hurt and I realized it was because I'd been smiling so much.

The Murphys were great. When I had an unexpected travel issue that resulted in my arriving a day late, they arranged their schedules to meet me when I got there. They let me know about an annual local event that I would never have known of otherwise; it was very cool to attend and learn about. They also provided me with free eggs from their free range chickens and homemade strawberry jam (which in my world = several super awesome breakfasts). They were just awesome hosts.

I would definitely recommend staying at Direen.

Peacefulness and tranquility

  • 5 of 5

A warm welcome awaited us at this beautiful cottage. Janet gave us great advice on where to go and what to see. It was a home away from home, so peaceful and relaxing. Our boys loved it from start to finish - whether it was climbing Mount Brandon, swimming at Fermoyle Beach or playing on the buoy swing in the garden. This is an excellent location to use as a base to explore Kerry. It was so wonderful to play board games at night in the light of the roaring peat fire. It was lovely to hear the history of the cottage. The scenery is truly breathtaking and we were sorry to go home. The local bakery is a must as is O'Conor,s pub in Cloghane! Thank you Janet.

Owner's Response: We are so glad you had such a great week in Direen Cottage. We aim to make the cottage homely so that guests can relax and enjoy peaceful living. The buoy swings are a great joy to many children who visit and they spend hours amusing themselves in the safe garden. The area is surrounded with walks and guests can enjoy the difficult Mount Brandon climb or easier hill walks as well as miles of beach at Fermoyle Strand. Also glad you took full advantage of the excellent Bacus bakery and O'Connor's Pub both situated in the village of Cloghane. I hope we meet again some day. Best wishes Janet and Eamonn

Good choice.

  • 4 of 5

Nice, very warm cottage and plenty of warm water, love it. It is a great place, in the middle of all beautiful places with the easy access to everything. Brandon Bay is fantastic! Nice hospitality and lovely breads in the little shop. If you like a bit of Irish taste this cottage will be a good choice. Thanks a lot.

Secluded and magical

  • 5 of 5

We arrived one night last December fighting a real gale - and stepped inside to very Irish coziness and tranquility, complete with blazing peat fires!

The cottage was more than comfortable; it was an oasis of West Irish hospitality, surrounded by lush, green hills, secluded seaside and Mt Brandon. A short trip down the road and we could pick up supplies, including the best home-baked bread I've ever tasted, in the charming Gaeltacht village of Cloghane. We felt like residents, not tourists, and somehow that made all the difference.

When I want to relax, I picture myself back there, listening to the wind, abundant birdsong, distant waves and the babbling brook that runs alongside the house. We'll return to experience the cottage in the summer, I know.

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to write a review on your stay at Direen Cottage. The night you arrived was the first of a number of serious storms this winter! That sort of weather can alarm many visitors so it is all the more important that we provide a warm, cosy and comfortable welcome and the turf fire does so much to create this. Cloghane Village and the Bacus Bakery/shop are less than a mile from the cottage and their proximity to the cottage is of great benefit to visitors. I am glad you were made to feel so welcome in the village as we all like to make visitors feel welcome and to see people taking part in the activities of the area. Many guests to the cottage have commented and enjoyed the small stream running alongside the cottage where there is a large enclosed garden with birdsong and wildlife plentiful. We look forward to welcoming you back to the cottage again, some day soon.

Comfy Peat fires...

  • 5 of 5

I recently stayed at Direen Cottage for a week with a friend. It was a wonderfully comfortable, spacious, well-equipped home for that week, complete with comforting peat fires in the den in the evening as we dealt with the day's photographs. It's important to say these days that the wifi was speedy and reliable and secure. We also managed to produce wonderful meals in the well-equipped kitchen. It was a great location and we were able to explore all the roads on Dingle, even mastering daily trips over the Conor pass and back. Thanks again and highly recommended.

Owner's Response: We are glad that you had a very comfortable stay at Direen Cottage. The WIFI is a new addition to the cottage this year and it is good to know that it is speedy, reliable and secure. The turf fire and stove are optional for heat in the cottage but if you enjoy a good fire they add a cosy and comfortable feel to the cottage. We hope to meet again one day!

Owner's Response: We are so glad your children had such a good time in the garden! If the children are happy the adults have a good holiday. The 2 swings give hours of amusement, as well as plenty of tree climbing and a small stream running through the garden. The garden is enclosed making a very safe play space. The garden is so peaceful with birdsong, swaying trees and the flowing stream the only sounds to be heard. We hope you will be back again before too long!
