We selected this unit for its views, amenities, and proximity to town. We furnished it for ourselves and our guests to enjoy all the comforts of home, including a kitchen where serious foodies can cook the way we do at home. Watch whales, ships, and transport planes come and go from a lanai furnished for comfort with a northeasterly panoramic view from Banyan Drive to downtown Hilo. Live in the Hawaii the locals remember where there is a real town and "Mahalo" still means something.

About Terry Wechsler and Randy Frank
When Randy retired from the Army Medical Corps to practice in the private sector, he and Terry chose to raise their children in the Pacific Northwest where their sons thrived, but the long rainy winters eventually took their toll. When the boys were settled in their lives, Randy and Terry began escaping to the Big Island mid-winter to see the sun, but it didn't take long to realize Hilo had the tropical landscape and feel of the old Hawaiian plantation days.

Why Terry Wechsler and Randy Frank chose Hilo
After looking at homes and condos everywhere else for months, we discovered Bayshore Towers and found the ideal situation for all our needs. With 2 bathrooms, an updated floorplan with new kitchen, a swimming pool, and on-site laundry, we have all the conveniences we required. Add to that the fact that we can walk to town, and reach all the prime beaches and locations in and immediately adjacent to Hilo -- by bike or vehicle -- and we knew this was where we wanted to be.
What makes this Condo unique
This seventh floor corner unit has incomparable light and ventilation with "living" views of the Bay. We love watching recreational and commercial vessels coming and going. We furnished this unit for ourselves, with high quality cookware and small appliances; dishes and flatware that are suitable for a dinner party; and furniture and furnishings that are comfortable and tasteful enough to make one feel at home on an extended stay.

Gorgeous views in tropical paradise
We loved being able to walk to downtown Hilo and enjoying the plethora of restaurants shops and of course the Farmers Market... the condo itself is beautiful and Tastefully decorated with Incredible million-dollar views of the Bay. We loved watching the ships passing as well as the traditional rowers in their Outrigger canoes... would highly recommend to anyone who wants a taste of old Hawaii away from the tourist madness. Very close also to farms and the gorgeous and unsurpassed Hamakua coastline.
Nice view adequately equipped but the heat and humidity was oppressive most days
One of the beds was very uncomfortable, most likely had broken springs. The other bed smelled like urine. Although it was claimed to have good air flow we rarely had that experience and most mornings I would wake up sweating. The humidity was about 80-100% the whole time. I know the owners can’t control the weather but next time I go to Hilo I would choose a place with AC. The owners are very nice and I think they make every effort they get 4 stars. The place 2. That’s why it gets 3 stars
We appreciate the excellent rating Marc gave us as hosts (4 out of 4 stars), and sincerely regret that selecting an unairconditioned unit in Hilo at this time of year was a poor choice for a traveler with unique health issues.
Had we known the bed frame in the master needed repair, we would have addressed that immediately. We have a local manager, as well as a list of local folks who are tops of their crafts to do necessary repairs. It is regrettable we did not know about this until after the leasehold.
As to any odors, all I know is that we launder everything including mattress pads and bedspreads between guests, and my manager could detect nothing.
Again, we regret that you did not communicate your concerns with the unit to us when we might have had an opportunity to do something to remedy the conditions. Of course, there is no way we can cure the situation if one has chosen a destination that is not optimum for their unique needs.

Perfect place right on the ocean for our vacation
We stayed here for 2 weeks and enjoyed listening to the ocean every night as we fell asleep. Having coffee on the patio overlooking the ocean was a nice treat every morning. Short drive or walk to the town for shopping and great meals. We got fresh veggies from the farmers market which made for an amazing salad. The owners were very personable and answered any questions quickly. Felt like our home away from home with an ocean view.
The best there is
Wow. We can't say enough good things about Terry and Randy's place, nor about them as hosts. The apartment is a real home, with a FULLY equipped kitchen, two comfortable beds, tasteful and comfortable furnishings and a full 270-degree view of the ocean and all of Hilo Bay: every night, we could even see the lava fountain and the glow from the river of lava down in Puna 25 miles away. Terry has included so many thoughtful touches, like a roll of quarters to help with your first load of laundry (please replace it), two full sets of snorkel gear in a bucket on the lanai, a set of travel and other books (in addition to books held the community library downstairs), fans in all the rooms (air conditioning absolutely unnecessary with the breeze that blows through almost constantly), a little bin of first aid supplies in the bathroom, etc.
It's an easy 5-8 minute walk to funky, wonderful downtown Hilo, maybe 10 minutes to the legendary farmers' market. As Hawaii's second largest city (with a whopping 40,000 people) and a university town, Hilo has lots to do and see without the burden of the overwhelming tourist presence of the other side of the island.
People in the tower are friendly and helpful...it's really a vertical village with all the neighborly attitude (and intrigues) of any small village. And Terry, our host, is incredibly responsive, as is Debbie, the local contact person.
We don't believe you can do any better in Hilo, and we hope the place is available the next time we're on the Big Island.
Wow, Mike, we’re so happy you enjoyed your stay as much as you did. You were just the ideal guests and we, likewise, would love to welcome you back again.
Mahalo and aloha.
A special place
I am a well traveled New Yorker. This is definitely one of the most delightful and best value rentals I have ever enjoyed. The apartment is beautifully decorated with local art, very clean, well stocked, and comfortable and the building is impeccably maintained. We arrived to find a dozen eggs, coffee (caf and decaf), milk, non dairy creamer , and a huge range of cooking basics such as all sorts of condiments, spices , oils and vinegars and gourmet utensils and pots.....and bottle each of red and white wine. I love to cook so it was such a gift to find this kitchen. Instructions are to use what you want and replace it if you use it up. We did. Shop for produce at the Farmers Market or any one of the many groceries in town. .. or eat in one of the many first rate restaurants or “locals” dining experiences. The pool is warm and wonderful .... I went down almost every morning.... a great way to meet the neighbors. Terry, the contact person of the couple who own the apartment , is friendly, sensible, accommodating and helpful. The neighbors are warm and delightful and the location is convenient to so many things for both sunny and rainy days as long as you are willing to drive and explore. The apartment is definitely walkable to Hilo town so go ahead and stop at the Hilo Town Tavern to drink and dance ... no need to drive home. ... just an 8 minute walk..or for an alcohol free evening go to the Awa bar for excellent acoustic music and try a soothing awa. This town is so welcoming and interesting....there is a university with a performing center, a classic old movie theater, nightly music in most bars and restaraunts several good museums and adventure hiking you can even bundle up and ascend Mauna Kea for some stargazing in the snow. Fabulous white sand warm swimming and snorkeling beaches are only an hours drive on the Kona side of the island and the “hot ponds” are only about 30 minutes out of town. One word of caution... the apartment is right on the bay and the sound of surf can be pretty loud. ... as are the frogs that chirp all night , all over the Big Island. ... get used to it, don’t think of it as a reason not to come.
Thank you for taking the time to share your experiences with us and future guests. We're so glad you enjoyed your stay. You guys are world-class travelers. And cooks, by the sounds of it. -- Terry and Randy
Incredible Stay right on the Bay!!
I've stayed in apartments long term all over the world.. From Spain to Mexico and beyond.. This apartment in Hilo, Hawaii was by far my favorite. Terry and Co. had this place prepared for every single possible condition (beach chairs, towels, you name it). The kitchen was impeccable and the view from the balcony.. Well you'll just have to sit there for a few hours every day like I did and admire the rainbows and sea turtles swimming by. I admit, getting used to the sound of the ocean when I went to sleep took a few nights to get comfortable with.. Now I miss it compared to the honking horns of New York City. You couldn't get a better place in Hilo if you tried.. Thanks for everything !
