About Ken Cross and Patti Sharp

Ken moved to the area in 1982 from Florida, and Patti arrived 10 years later. We met in 1996 and have been together ever since. In 2007, we bought our West Asheville home on the top of our hill because of the spectacular view and privacy. Ken retired in 2008, and Patti is semi-retired. Patti is a part-time potter and has her studio in the basement of the home. Ken enjoys photography, and we both love to travel and are scuba divers. We are excited about hosting guests at The Top O' The Knob Chalet, and hope to meet and help our guests learn more about Asheville.

Cozy, inviting & private!

  • 5 of 5

This was our first trip to Asheville as a married couple & we had a blast! Ken gave us a quick tour shortly after we arrived & told us unless we needed them, we wouldn't be bothered. Although the room is attached to Ken & Patti's home, the room (which is more like a studio apartment) had a separate entrance & allowed us to come & go as we pleased. The place is quaint, quiet, cozy & we felt very welcomed. Ken & Patti even provided bags of ice in the mini fridge & K cups of coffee for the days we stayed. Would definitely stay again!

Places to Eat: Pack's Tavern - Mike can sling a drink & the bison meatloaf was amazing! Biscuit Head - AMAZING breakfast, try the fried chicken biscuit with apple butter & poached egg. Grits were delicious! Tupelo Honey Cafe - GO EARLY or you'll be standing in line. We ate at the chef's bar & I have never seen a kitchen line run so efficiently as this place. The sweet potato pancake with chicken, bacon & pecans - HOLY CRAP!!!!!! My husband had the steak & potatoes....AMAZING! Homegrown was a great twist on traditional Southern food. Check out FILO for coffee!

Things to do: Walk around downtown...interesting place with lots of shops, cafes, antique shops. DuPont State Park....it's about a 45 minute drive BUT so worth it.....we hiked to High Falls & Triple Falls.....views & falls are breathtaking. Dress warm & wear comfy shoes!

We can't wait to come back!

Owner's Response: Sara, thanks so much for the great review. Most folks only review the room but we're glad you let others know just what a great place Asheville is with your comments about the city. There are many fantastic eateries and so any interesting paces to see here. You only scratched the surface during your short visit. Plan to hang around longer next time. Know that you are welcome to stay with us anytime and hope you choose us the next time you come to Asheville. Ken and Patti.

Above and Beyond

  • 5 of 5

Everything about my short stay was delightful. I am looking forward to coming back again. Ken and Patti went above and beyond with little things like responding to my request for a recommendation for a hair salon or turning on my porch light when it got dark before my return one evening...It's always the little things!! Accommodations very private, very comfortable and very clean and quiet...a get-away dream come true. Thank you Ken and Patti

Perfect mountain retreat for two

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I stayed at Top of the knob in January and couldn't have been more pleased with our stay. The room was much larger than it appears in the photos. The property is right at the top of a small mountain and the views are beautiful. The mountain is a fairly residential area, but you feel very secluded on top of the mountain. The property is about a ten minute drive from anywhere in Asheville and Uber's had no problem finding it. Ken and Patti furnish the suite with everything you will need for a perfect getaway for two. I would highly recommend this rental.

The room looked amazing the moment we entered. Everything was well maintained and organized. :)

  • 5 of 5

We had the most amazing time in Asheville, thanks to the Top of the knob and Ken and Patti's hospitality. The room exceeded our expectations so much that we did not want to come back. It had everything that one would want for a perfect retreat. A heartfelt thank you to VRBO and Ken and Patti. We enjoyed every bit of our stay. :)

Owner's Response: Arundhati, We are so glad you enjoyed your stay with us even though it snowed and you kind of got stuck in the room. We're hoping that you didn't mean that you didn't want to come back because the rest of your review was stellar, thank you. We're sure that your comment was a mistake. Please know that you are welcome back anytime, you were great guests. There is so much to see and do in Asheville we're sure you will. We're also glad you enjoyed the spaghetti and salad. Please come and see us again. Ken and Patti

Wonderful Retreat Away!

  • 5 of 5

We booked this property for our 13th Anniversary and we were not disappointed! It was a Retreat away from the hustle however it only took us about 10 min to get anywhere we wanted to visit (downtown, Biltmore, etc). Ken was a wonderful host! The views were breathtaking and the bed was comfy!! Perfect place for a trip to Asheville!
