About Ken Cross and Patti Sharp

Ken moved to the area in 1982 from Florida, and Patti arrived 10 years later. We met in 1996 and have been together ever since. In 2007, we bought our West Asheville home on the top of our hill because of the spectacular view and privacy. Ken retired in 2008, and Patti is semi-retired. Patti is a part-time potter and has her studio in the basement of the home. Ken enjoys photography, and we both love to travel and are scuba divers. We are excited about hosting guests at The Top O' The Knob Chalet, and hope to meet and help our guests learn more about Asheville.

Many things we liked, several we really didn't.

  • 3 of 5

My husband and I came for a 5 night visit. The area the home is located in is a diverse mix of homes and trailers....as well as some boarded up homes and trailers. Some of the homes were well kept, some were not. Junked up cars and cluttered yards were not uncommon sites. Chickens, roosters, dogs (as well as adorable bunnies) roam the area freely. We almost ran a chicken over as it decided to cross the road right in front of us. The owner of the trailer home next door has a sign in the windshield of his dilapidated truck that says "NO TRESPASSING" and this is what you see as you start your drive up to the house. All that being said, when we arrived we found our room to be spacious and clean. The bathroom was very nice with double sinks and a double shower. The "spa tub" I would not recommend using as I got in the water and then turned on the jets as the sign instructed only to find myself immersed in water with black gunk that came out of the jets. Yuck. The dining area has a Keurig but coffee is supplied very sparsely. I did ask about this ahead of time so I knew whether or not to bring my own coffee pods. As it was a 5 night stay we anticipated a restock daily but in fact we always had to ask for more. Perhaps best to simply bring your own if you drink a lot of coffee as we do. The mattress is quite comfy but I am not one to sleep under a down comforter. The blankets provided were quite heavy as well, cozy for many perhaps but way too hot for me. The air conditioning is controlled by the owners in the main house and is all on one system so that is out of your control. I like my room cool at night for sleeping and did have to ask for them to turn it down, which they did. Overall our stay was fine with my biggest objection being the area. It is just simply not an area I would choose to stay in for a vacation getaway although the proximity to downtown was quite convenient. Just know ahead of time what kind of area/scenery to expect. The price is reasonable though. We also enjoyed Hulu which was provided. My rating is based in large part on the area and partially on my experience with the spa bath as well as how the owners took my asking for more coffee and a lighter weight blanket…which was not well at all.

Owner's Response: Diana, Thank you for your review, even though it isn’t what we would have liked to have seen from one of our guests. We strive to provide our guests with a 5-star experience, even though we sometimes experience less than that in return from our guests. You stated that “overall, the stay was fine with the biggest objection being the area,” and you outlined the positives. As far as the negatives, the spa tub problem has been corrected, and we are very sorry for that happening to you. Thanks for letting us know. As far as our location, our property is in a rural area in West Asheville. There are wild life, chickens, dogs, cats, and even a donkey and goats at the end of the road. There’s everything from beautiful large homes to single-wide trailers. The neighbor’s car and the boarded trailer on the next street are out of our control. Our home is well-maintained on a 1-acre lot with gardens, lawns, and a paved driveway with numerous beautiful trees and fantastic sunsets. We provide our guests with a cup of coffee each for each day they are our guest and we don’t feel that it is our responsibility to provide you with 10 cups each daily; you did NOT offer to bring your own pods. We had no problem adjusting the temperature control and providing you with a different blanket. Overall, we tried to do the best we could to provide you with the best experience you could have while staying with us. We believe we did just that, and you couldn’t be made happy. We’ll have to let our other guest reviews stand on their own merit – we have over 100 reviews between both rental sites; only six are 4-star and the rest are 5-star. Our listing is clear about where we live and what we provide for our guests. For you and potential future guests, we offer a unique lodging experience in Asheville that provides the comforts of home in an upscale hotel room without the hub-bub, noise, and costs of a hotel. If you’re looking for what we have to offer, come see us. If not, we’re sure you will be happy at a one of the many hotels in Asheville.

2nd Visit!

  • 5 of 5

We love Top O'The Knob for many many reasons. This was our 2nd stay. Not only is it private, roomy, clean, beautiful and comfortable but you get to see cute little creatures like 2 bunnies playing, lots of squirrels and even wild turkeys in the yard. Ken and Patty make you feel welcome and safe. You get the cozy cabin experience while being just 10 minutes from downtown Asheville. We will be back again!

A truly wonderful place to stay in Asheville.

  • 5 of 5

From the moment we arrived we loved this place. Our hosts Ken and Patti were perfect. They made it clear they were interested in us having a good stay. The room and the bathroom were large, comfortable, well appointed, and very clean. We had our own private porch. The property is well located, in a wooded area just out of Asheville, but an easy drive to many of the restaurants and attractions. When we return to Asheville this will be our first choice of lodging.
