You can rent the top floor ($260 US + one time cleaning fee $200 + tax 14.42 %; 4 guests + 1 child + $35 per night; 2 BR/2 BA), or the whole house/two floors $425 US + cleaning fee $350 (max 8 adults & 2 children under the age of 10 + $35 / child / night) + taxes 14.42 %. VRBO's system may show higher prices so you have to ask us for the whole house price $425 + cleaning+taxes. If you would like to rent the Ground Floor only the price is $210 US + tax per night+cleaning. You can book the Ground Floor on VRBO through our other listing # 1020452. Perfectly located getaway just above historical Kealakekua Bay, ranked as #11 by CNN as the world's best snorkeling destinations and #1 among the Hawaii islands. Yet close to Kona in a beautiful and quiet area with the old Hawaiian feeling. Just minutes away from beaches, snorkeling, restaurants, supermarket, cafes, banks, hospital and more. It is situated in a very nice and quite neighborhood.

The airport is 6 miles north of Kailua-Kona. Our house is perfectly located 14 miles south of Kailua-Kona. As a reference, Kona Paradise which may save you a few dollars is another 12 miles or 25 minute drive south of our house further away from Kailua-Kona.

Our brand new, beautiful 4600 sq. ft. (427 sq. m.) LUXURY house has two identical separate floors (2300 sq. ft. on each floor). It’s super comfortable with everything you can possibly need including a hot tub on the top floor lanai and breath taking 180-degree view of the mountains and the ocean on both floors.

Half of the 2300 sq. ft. area on each floor consists of a covered lanai, great for enjoying your morning espresso while watching the sun climbing over the mountain top, or watch the sun set over the ocean while enjoying our 8 people dining table on the lanai when the chef is cooking on the outdoor grill. At night you will be amazed by our spacious 6-person hot tub on the top floor lanai while gazing the stars. With a fantastic 180-degree view of the mountain and the ocean, from Kealakekua Bay to Honaunau Bay, you can sit for hours just relaxing in our luxury patio chaise loungers.

The top floor has a beautiful kitchen and living room all in one while the ground floor has the same layout, but the ground floor kitchen is without an oven and a regular cook top. Instead it has a dual hot plate. Both floors have micro wave ovens, large Weber outdoor grills on the lanais and beautiful quartz stone counter tops.

You can cook in the kitchen and watch the 65-inch 4K TV in the living room at the same time, or have a drink and a snack at the kitchen island that seats 4, while you are watching the chef preparing your food. Enjoy your dinner on one of the two lanais at our big dinner tables which seats up to 8. Both floors look the same and are set up the same, but the top floor has 15 ft. ceilings.

Each floor has 2 bedrooms with attached bathrooms and walk in closets. Each floor sleeps 4 people (1 King and 2 Twin beds which can be put together) and there is a possibility to put in two extra folding beds with memory foam mattresses (perfect for children). The living rooms on each floor have 65 inch TVs and luxury sofas.

When you wake up in your bed in the mornings, open your eyes, look out through the big sliders and be swept away by the amazing ocean view. At 1100 ft. the temperature is just perfect, 80 degrees during the day and 70 degrees at night. You sleep great at this elevation without an air conditioning.

Our house is perfectly located in a beautiful neighborhood with an easy driveway and plenty of parking. Just minutes away from shopping and the best breakfast place on the island, The Coffee Shack.

Your first day, you are most likely heading down to Kealakekua Bay, to snorkel, watch wild spinner dolphins in the morning or kayaking. Either way it’s a convenient 12-minute drive. Your second day, you may want to go south for 20 minutes and visit the sandy and most private beach of Hookena, one of the gems when it comes to beaches in the area, with great swimming and sometimes plenty of wild dolphins. The third day another gem is Honaunau National Historical Park (10 minutes drive). One of the evenings, you can drive 10 minutes north for fine dining at Keei Café, or just have great food at Annie's Burger, or continue another 10 minutes north for all the choices Kailua-Kona has to offer.

Our house is a great base for exploring the Island. We love to go around the Island for a long day, or if you haven’t done it before, stay a night in Hilo to have some more time exploring the area. Driving around the Island in one day, starting at 6 AM, will allow time for a visit to the Volcano, lunch in Hilo, driving the amazing 4-Mile Scenic Drive through the rain forest, experiencing Akaka Falls just before sunset and then coming back through Waimea and Kona around 8 PM. Adding another day will make time for a visit to Hilo Zoo, it’s a blast for the children, and watch the lava flow at night.

We always love to come back to the peace and calmness of our neighborhood and the house after a long day on the road. Going north of Kona to the resorts is an easy 45-minute drive, and will be fun for a day. Hilton Waikoloa is well worth a visit just to get the feeling of how nice it is to be back at the house! There are several great beaches up north as well. The largest sandy beach on the island is Hapuna Beach Park (50 minute drive up north).

Notes:
Things that we enjoy to do. We like to go snorkeling and swimming in our area and we prefer to go to Kealakekua Bay, Honaunau/Two Step or Hookena Beachpark. Usually you can spot Dolphins in these areas and to see them under water is very special. You can also go to Honaunau National Historical Park in the afternoon and they have charcoal grills there so you can barbecue and have dinner there and watch the sunset. You can also walk on a very beautiful trail there or just hang out. They usually close the park around 6 -7 PM and they are strict about that. If you go up North and like to go to a fancy resort we like to go to Fairmont Orchid for lunch especially if you have children that like to go to the pool or the hot tub. Compared to other resorts like Hilton or Four Season where you are not allowed to go to the pool if you don't live there. Our favorite beach north of Kona is Manini'owali Beach. When you see two big brown hills you turn left. Manua Kea is definitely worth a visit.

My husband and I rented this home recently with another couple and it was perfect. I hoped it would be as nice as it seemed in the pictures and it was even better! It I was super impressed when we drove up to the house, which is a quick 20-30 minute drive from Kona. The house felt like an estate, with a huge yard and two beautiful lanais. The view from the house is breathtaking with ocean, mountain and valley views. We rented the top level of the home and I would suggest choosing this one if it is available as it has a great hot tub and beautiful, well appointed kitchen. If you are traveling with a family or large group you should definitely rent both levels together and have the whole house to yourself! The house is a quick, winding drive down to a beautiful stony beach and the Painted Church. I suggest taking that trip near sundown! Also very close by is a grocery store, lots of quaint antique stores and the Coffee Shack which is a great place for breakfast. Mikael and Carola were great hosts. They were quick communicators and made sure that we had everything we needed, they even left a great info packet at the house. There is also laundry on the first floor of the house which is a great plus while traveling. The house is clean and seems new with great minimalist beachy decor. It is all fresh white and crisp blue and feels like a modern beach retreat. The living and kitchen are one big great room and the house has a master suite on either side of the living area with walk in closets and beautifully appointed private bathrooms with walk in showers and double vanities. There's lots of great communal space but the bedrooms feel very private. The lanai creates what feels like double the living space with an awesome hot tub, bbq, dining area and living area. It's a great place to start and end the day! Believe me, this place IS as great as it looks and the owners seem wonderful!

spacious floor with a big expansive lanai with a hot top and barbecue. the kitchen is well organized and has all that one needs. all the rooms have the view of the bay. the view is of kealakekua and the whole coastline, very beautiful when it is not cloudy.

We enjoyed our stay and we had not trouble of any kind.

Highlight of our vacation

We are hesitant to give this home rave reviews as we are afraid it will become so popular we won't be able to reserve in the future, but that's not fair to do..so here goes: Staying at the White Whale House in Captain Cook WAS the highlight of our vacation trip to Hawaii hands down.

From the time we drove up, walked upstairs and opened the door, we were totally amazed and in awe of this home. The house was amazing, the views spectacular. We could not stop talking about how incredible it was. We had some friends (who rented nearby) over for dinner and they fell in love as well and even asked if we would consider renting with them next year...without a doubt!

Every detail of the home, every nuance was well thought out. The upstairs unit is the one to rent if you can because it has a hot tub on the deck and also an oven in it; not to mention the phenomenal views. Every appliance you could ever hope for can be found in the home and the espresso machine, was life altering (literally, we had to come home and get one).

The instructions and welcome package were very detailed and so helpful. I read that others found it a little annoying, but we found it refreshing that we didn't have to think about what we needed to do or how to do something.

The best part was the lanai. We loved spending our early mornings and evenings out there just relaxing. I can't say enough good things about this place.

Carola & Mikael, thank you for opening up your home and allowing us to stay there...it certainly is paradise. We will definitely be back!

Awesome Lanai and View!

We definitely enjoyed this beautiful home and spent countless hours on the lanai from the top unit. The view of the ocean and tropical hills is incredible. The well stocked kitchen with grill made dinners and breakfast relaxing and convenient. The home was perfect for our visit. The layout provided open views from each room but also privacy for each couple with the bedrooms and bathrooms on each end. The hot tub was a nice perk as well.

Good location, close to Kailua-Kona for shopping and night time entertainment. We also spent a couple afternoons snorkeling at Honaunau Bay (2-steps) only 10-15 minute drive. Great snorkeling spot with spectacular coral seabeds and hundreds of multi-colored fish.

I would definitely recommend this rental home to others and I would strongly consider staying again when visiting the big isle. I'm missing the lanai and view already.

Stay by the bay

One of the nicest homes I have had the pleasure to stay at. We did a few nights in Captain Cook with our party. The home is nicely laid out with a wonderful view of the bay. There are a lot of notes and a binder available so you shouldn't have many questions. There is a supermarket just down the road in one direction and a great breakfast place in the other. Its a wonderful location to set up a base-camp while exploring the island. Will be sure to inquire with this property again if we go back to the big island.

More beautiful than in the pictures! And those are great.

We rented the top floor. The location is terrific, down the road from coffee farms, a wonderful fruit stand (get the passion fruit juice and anything that is ripe), and a great grocery store. Also a short drive to the beach, and hiking trails. But here is the secret: you may not want to leave the property. We spent great parts of our stay on the beautiful lanai. Sunsets, a relaxing hot tub, a view of the ocean kept luring us back to the property. A well-stocked, beautifully designed place!

The airport is 6 miles north of Kailua-Kona. Our house is perfectly located 14 miles south of Kailua-Kona. Kona Paradise is another 12 miles south of our house. Our house is close to everything you can possible need. Just 5 minutes away from a large grocery store. One of the biggest hospitals on the Island is close as well. Several ATM and banks are 8 minutes away. Kealakekua Bay, Ke'ei Beach and Honaunau, also called Two Step, are just a few miles away and offers great snorkeling at beautiful coral reefs, the possibility to watch wild dolphins and large turtles. You can kayak over to the Historical Captain Cook monument and snorkel at one of Hawaii's best coral reefs. Coffee Shack is just a few minutes away where you can get the best breakfast, lunch or just a nice cup of Kona coffee with award winning cakes you never will forget. If you like to enjoy a really good massage to a reasonable price it is just a 10 minutes drive to Aloha Massage Academy in the small town called Kainaliu. In this small town you can also find a yoga studio called Yoganics, small shops, amazing Italian ice cream at Gypsea Gelato. Close by is one of the best restaurants on the Island Keei Cafe, where you can get a good lunch or a very special dinner and if you want a nice burger you have to visit Annie's Island Fresh Burgers also in this small town. Kona Boys is also close by if you want to rent a kayak, surfboard or snorkel gear.
