Pioneer living in style! Sometime around 1890, a very talented Finnish builder crafted several traditional log buildings on Minnesota’s Iron Range. We are fortunate to have one of these well-preserved structures at the Green Gate property, and have masterfully updated it into a unique, historic home.
We believe big things can come in small packages. The Log Cabin is a comfortable and very well-equipped home in a small footprint. This 1890s hand-hewn log cabin has been beautifully updated into a modern, cozy space. The 15′ x 15′ floorplan includes a kitchen, dining table, sofa and wood stove, plus a full bathroom neatly tucked below the loft staircase. Thanks to the Norwegian owner (who also happens to be an engineer), this Finnish log cabin is equipped with modern mechanicals including air conditioning, in-floor heat, and a high-efficiency tankless water heater for endless hot water. To complete your log cabin experience, there is also a gorgeous glass-fronted wood stove and always a full supply of firewood available During your stay. The well-appointed kitchen on the main floor includes a 2-burner gas cooktop, farm sink, concrete countertops, an undercounter refrigerator/freezer, coffemaker, teapot, and cookware/serving ware for 2-3 guests. A microwave and countertop convection oven are also provided in the nearby closet should you need them. The upper floor provides a peaceful rest space with a full-sized platform bed, reclaimed oak flooring, vaulted ceiling, air conditioning, DVD player, and great views of the surrounding forests. Outside, the wrap-around porch covers the south and west sides and extends to the adjacent hewn log “privy” and outdoor summer shower area nearby.
I am a degreed professional (mechanical engineering as well as nutrition science) with a variety of passions and interests. In addition to a 'corporate' engineering career, I have worked in the natural foods industry (various roles over several years at a food co-op), nutritional counseling, and residential construction and interior design. For the past few years, I have been dedicated to the design/build of Green Gate Guest Houses- three unique lodging properties on my 13 acre homestead.
I have a passion for all areas of construction, design, technology, sustainable living, renewable energy, etc., and enjoy putting ideas into action through the myriad of projects I always have going!
I enjoy nature, outdoors, exercise (running, hiking, cycling, skiing, etc), as well as the culture and arts of the city. I've traveled domestically and internationally, and value the insight gained from experiencing new cultures. I often bring back design ideas that are eventually incorporated into various projects around the property. Nepal is the next great destination on my bucket list.
Having operated my vacation rental properties for several years now, I have been fortunate to host such a variety of wonderful guests. Everyone that has stayed here has been a pleasure to get to know, and I look forward to all our future guests.

The quality of life and proximity to outdoor recreation are the reasons I have chosen to live and work in Biwabik MN. I enjoy developing unique properties that allow me to share these experiences with travelers visiting northern Minnesota.
This little cabin was perfect for two of us for a cc-ski weekend. Proximity to Giants Ridge and good restaurants in Gilbert and Biwabik was great. We loved the woodburning stove after dark (tip -the perfect background soundtrack was Radio Heartland, streaming on the Minnesota Public Radio mobile app played through the nice quality bluetooth speaker in the cabin). We also loved the heated floors. The upstairs bedroom was more spacious than we expected - well planned space for suitcases, place to hang clothes; outlets and lighting strategically placed. Everything was perfect - clean and new. We would love to stay here again - maybe for a biking weekend so we can take advantage of the porch.
This cabin is an adventure. We stayed for three nights and will return again one day. We already have shared these thoughts with our network of friends.

My husband and I stayed here for the Minnesota State High School Nordic Meet. This place was charming, comfortable and offered a warmth making it feel like home. The place was extremely well kept and clean and the owners were wonderful. We definitely recommend this home.
Our family loved our stay at the cabin. It was designed perfectly with all the conveniences of home. Met Shawn as we were checking out. He is passionate about what he does. I even got a reply to a text at 1:30AM! We will definitely be back and would recommend Shawn's properties to anyone.
