Pioneer living in style! Sometime around 1890, a very talented Finnish builder crafted several traditional log buildings on Minnesota’s Iron Range. We are fortunate to have one of these well-preserved structures at the Green Gate property, and have masterfully updated it into a unique, historic home.
We believe big things can come in small packages. The Log Cabin is a comfortable and very well-equipped home in a small footprint. This 1890s hand-hewn log cabin has been beautifully updated into a modern, cozy space. The 15′ x 15′ floorplan includes a kitchen, dining table, sofa and wood stove, plus a full bathroom neatly tucked below the loft staircase. Thanks to the Norwegian owner (who also happens to be an engineer), this Finnish log cabin is equipped with modern mechanicals including air conditioning, in-floor heat, and a high-efficiency tankless water heater for endless hot water. To complete your log cabin experience, there is also a gorgeous glass-fronted wood stove and always a full supply of firewood available During your stay. The well-appointed kitchen on the main floor includes a 2-burner gas cooktop, farm sink, concrete countertops, an undercounter refrigerator/freezer, coffemaker, teapot, and cookware/serving ware for 2-3 guests. A microwave and countertop convection oven are also provided in the nearby closet should you need them. The upper floor provides a peaceful rest space with a full-sized platform bed, reclaimed oak flooring, vaulted ceiling, air conditioning, DVD player, and great views of the surrounding forests. Outside, the wrap-around porch covers the south and west sides and extends to the adjacent hewn log “privy” and outdoor summer shower area nearby.
I am a degreed professional (mechanical engineering as well as nutrition science) with a variety of passions and interests. In addition to a 'corporate' engineering career, I have worked in the natural foods industry (various roles over several years at a food co-op), nutritional counseling, and residential construction and interior design. For the past few years, I have been dedicated to the design/build of Green Gate Guest Houses- three unique lodging properties on my 13 acre homestead.
I have a passion for all areas of construction, design, technology, sustainable living, renewable energy, etc., and enjoy putting ideas into action through the myriad of projects I always have going!
I enjoy nature, outdoors, exercise (running, hiking, cycling, skiing, etc), as well as the culture and arts of the city. I've traveled domestically and internationally, and value the insight gained from experiencing new cultures. I often bring back design ideas that are eventually incorporated into various projects around the property. Nepal is the next great destination on my bucket list.
Having operated my vacation rental properties for several years now, I have been fortunate to host such a variety of wonderful guests. Everyone that has stayed here has been a pleasure to get to know, and I look forward to all our future guests.
Shawn f callahan purchased this cabin in 2002
The quality of life and proximity to outdoor recreation are the reasons I have chosen to live and work in Biwabik MN. I enjoy developing unique properties that allow me to share these experiences with travelers visiting northern Minnesota.
Exactly what we were hoping for our Thanksgiving weekend away from everything. Close enough to a restaurant but equipped with anything you'd need to cook yourself and stay in. Lovely design and a dream cabin for two!
A smile swept across my face as I set foot on the perfectly imperfect front porch. It was a long-awaited moment. I let out a sigh of gratefulness as I opened the door to the delightfully decorated, well-appointed, everything-just-so, tiny cabin. Both inside & out - my girls and I enjoyed every moment. Shawn is simply amazing in his attention to detail and all who are lucky enough to experience his work - are lucky.
This was our 1st VRBO stay and we could not have had a better experience. The property was everything that was promised and more. We were glad to be able to meet the owner, Shawn and appreciated his efforts in making us feel welcome and comfortable. We were looking for a cozy, quiet, get away from it all cabin and this was the perfect place. All the little details in the cabin reflect Shawn's intent to offer the kind of stay that would leave wonderful memories for all who stay. We enjoyed taking a few drives in the area showcasing the beautiful fall colors.
We didn't expect to find a cabin originally crafted around 1890 to be so clean and modernized. Shawn does such nice work. After the initial walk-through, Wendy cried...happy tears! We wanted to stay here a week instead of a weekend. There are so many custom features. Custom made lighting, hand railings, paper towel holder, and more. He used a lot of the black pipe to make his creations. It had everything we needed and more. It was refreshing to NOT have cable or Wi-Fi so we could really enjoy our time together. It was a beautiful drive and close to some great food. We had the privilege to meet the owner/host Shawn Callahan of Green Gate Guest House's and he was so personable. He let us get a sneak peek of the Barn Home and we couldn't believe the detail. Shawn puts his heart and soul into every building on this property. We really enjoyed our stay. #TwoFoodiesWhoTravel
We had an excellent stay & thoroughly enjoyed all the thought and effort that went in to the cabin. It's a comfortable & cozy spot that fit us two and our toddler very well. Located near many nice lakes & landscapes. Would love to visit in the winter for skiing & more R&R. The owner was very kind and easy to work with.
The place was wonderful! It was a very beautiful cabin where my husband and I could relax . Everything is kept very nice and it has just what you need for a little retreat. Watching deer in the morning was also a nice addition to the stay. The area is also very beautiful. What a great place to just enjoy nature! Shawn was great to work with and very kind to us. Definitely a cabin I would come to again.
