Overview

About the property

Completely renovated 1 bedroom, 1 bath getaway

Pioneer living in style! Sometime around 1890, a very talented Finnish builder crafted several traditional log buildings on Minnesota’s Iron Range. We are fortunate to have one of these well-preserved structures at the Green Gate property, and have masterfully updated it into a unique, historic home.

We believe big things can come in small packages. The Log Cabin is a comfortable and very well-equipped home in a small footprint. This 1890s hand-hewn log cabin has been beautifully updated into a modern, cozy space. The 15′ x 15′ floorplan includes a kitchen, dining table, sofa and wood stove, plus a full bathroom neatly tucked below the loft staircase. Thanks to the Norwegian owner (who also happens to be an engineer), this Finnish log cabin is equipped with modern mechanicals including air conditioning, in-floor heat, and a high-efficiency tankless water heater for endless hot water. To complete your log cabin experience, there is also a gorgeous glass-fronted wood stove and always a full supply of firewood available During your stay. The well-appointed kitchen on the main floor includes a 2-burner gas cooktop, farm sink, concrete countertops, an undercounter refrigerator/freezer, coffemaker, teapot, and cookware/serving ware for 2-3 guests. A microwave and countertop convection oven are also provided in the nearby closet should you need them. The upper floor provides a peaceful rest space with a full-sized platform bed, reclaimed oak flooring, vaulted ceiling, air conditioning, DVD player, and great views of the surrounding forests. Outside, the wrap-around porch covers the south and west sides and extends to the adjacent hewn log “privy” and outdoor summer shower area nearby.

About Shawn f callahan

I am a degreed professional (mechanical engineering as well as nutrition science) with a variety of passions and interests. In addition to a 'corporate' engineering career, I have worked in the natural foods industry (various roles over several years at a food co-op), nutritional counseling, and residential construction and interior design. For the past few years, I have been dedicated to the design/build of Green Gate Guest Houses- three unique lodging properties on my 13 acre homestead.

I have a passion for all areas of construction, design, technology, sustainable living, renewable energy, etc., and enjoy putting ideas into action through the myriad of projects I always have going!

I enjoy nature, outdoors, exercise (running, hiking, cycling, skiing, etc), as well as the culture and arts of the city. I've traveled domestically and internationally, and value the insight gained from experiencing new cultures. I often bring back design ideas that are eventually incorporated into various projects around the property. Nepal is the next great destination on my bucket list.

Having operated my vacation rental properties for several years now, I have been fortunate to host such a variety of wonderful guests. Everyone that has stayed here has been a pleasure to get to know, and I look forward to all our future guests.

Beyond Perfect for my wedding!

  • 5 of 5

I could not have chosen a better venue for my 100 guest wedding. The communication with Shawn was excellent right from the start. He certainly took a bit of stress off if the Bride! He was available with answers and help with any concern or question we had. So friendly and interesting to chat with. Just learning some of the history of the property was amazing! The craftsmanship of each of the houses on the property is nothing short of stunning. Shawn is definitely a master at what he does. The detail, the reclaiming, the unique touches that you notice one at a time....Green Gate is a true gem. And his respect for our environment is so so appreciated, another reason to love this place!

The property is beautiful to walk around and explore, trails in the woods that go down to the river (where you will find #4...☺️, another gem). The fruit trees in the yard, raspberry bushes, and fresh eggs daily! The chickens were fantastic! I loved walking over in the morning with my coffee, chatting with them, bringing them a little treat and collecting eggs for breakfast.

I will definitely return to Green Gate for a little bit more of a relaxing stay. And if I could give 10 stars I would, it's so deserving!

Thank you so much!

Tranquil & Serene topped with Basic Beauty and Simple Nature - What more do you need!?!?

  • 5 of 5

This cabin was so very nice and cozy. The owner has blood, sweat and tears into each one of his properties, and an extreme amount of pride, as you can see by the attention to detail. The creativity and ingenuity that went into them is so awe inspiring. To do what you love...and it shows!! Yes, I'm a bit jealous :-)

It was truly awesome to get out of the hectic world of 'life' and relax without technological dependencies. We definitely enjoyed the fire pit, deck and just plain relaxing outside. Some awesome cloud formations one of the days...and the MOON - WOW!! It was stunning.

Although we are not much for hiking, which is nearby, my husband and I did have a wonderful time at one of two local golf courses. Rated #1 in MN, it's within 5 minutes from the cabin.

We will definitely be back. Maybe for a winter getaway this time.

Thank you for sharing your passion and gift. We truly appreciate you and your craft - until next time.
