Bed bug on a chair in the front porch

  • 1 of 5

What was good?

Property is located in the a nice and green neighborhood in kaibab forest. Close proximity to grand canyon south rim, which is about an hour away.

What was bad?

We found a bed bug on a chair in the front porch and had to be really careful then onwards especially sitting on the couch or any of the cushioned chairs. Owner claimed it was a beetle, but we were pretty sure it was a bed bug. Also, there were cobwebs all over the house and seemed it was poorly maintained.

Owner's Response: Jatan and his group were our guests for the weekend of Aug 5th thru the 7th. Late Saturday morning they called me and said they had found a bedbug in the front sitting room crawling on the ottoman in front of the wood stove. I asked them to text me a picture. The picture was taken from too far away to clearly see the bug. When attempting to enlarge it, it simply became too blurry to identify. That afternoon they went to the Grand Canyon. Meanwhile I researched bedbugs and beetles and we texted back and forth. They returned to the cabin and spent Saturday night there. Sunday morning, they texted me and wanted to know what I was going to do about it. I was quite confident that they had misidentified the bug as people had been in the cabin for the past three and one half months solid with only four days between when they left and Jatan arrived. During those four days my cleaning woman cleaned and never saw a bedbug. Since it became a VRBO ten months ago, no one has ever complained of seeing a bedbug. Before then, I lived in the cabin for thirteen years and never saw a bedbug. So when I got the text Sunday morning my husband and I tried to call on both phones they had used and left messages for them. They never returned our calls so we texted them and asked if they would put the bug in a baggie so that when I got there I could bring it to Northern Arizona University and have it examined. If it was a bedbug I would have the house treated and refund $100.00 as they had stayed there both nights. At that point, Jatan texted he had flushed the bug down the toilet and that he would “review it on VRBO so that anyone who rents in the future would be aware of it”. I was understandably very upset and called Home Away. The gentleman that I spoke with was very helpful. He said a “bedbug scam was a huge problem in Hawaii”, and that I should call a pest control company. I called Conn Pest Control (rated the best in Flagstaff) and the manager came out. He did a thorough examination of the ottoman, taking the underside protective cover off. He examined the matching chair, then proceeded through the cabin, taking all the beds apart, checking the bedding, mattresses and box springs. He found no bedbugs or any evidence of them. He said that a person would never find just one bedbug. There would be more and there would be evidence of them. If the Pandyas found a bedbug, they must have brought it in with them either by accident or design. For pest report copy please ask.

Quiet and peaceful...

  • 3 of 5

The home was far enough away from the city so you could enjoy the beautiful night skies and still close enough to visit downtown flagstaff and go snowboarding in Snowbowl. This home was about an hour away from Grand Canyon and 20 minutes from Bearizona. The home was cozy and warm but could use a new bed in the room adjacent to the kitchen. It was not in good shape for sleeping and is only for one small person or small children. The owner was very nice and helpful throughout the whole process.

Owner's Response: The bed off the kitchen is actually a double bed - the same size as the bed in the second bedroom and it was new 3 years ago. We just replaced the double in the second bedroom with a very cozy queen.

Like staying at grandma's house

  • 4 of 5

This was a cute little cabin in a quiet neighborhood in a small town. It is decorated really old fashioned which gave it a homey feel like being at grandma's house. The fenced area for dogs is good, but it is not attached to an outside door to let them out. There is a TV, but it is old and kinda small. There isn't cable so you must bring DVDs to watch on the player. There also is no Wifi there. There are books and games, but they are all really old ones. The bed mattresses weren't the most comfortable and sunk in the middle. You have to be extra careful of your water usage because it is brought in by truck. Overall the cabin was OK and mostly clean. What we liked the most is that we were able to bring our pets with us and not pay an extra deposit for them. Also the location was perfect for what we were there for because it was close to both Williams and Flagstaff.

Owner's Response: It probably was like staying at grandma's house because I am a grandma! The old tv has been replaced with a new flat screen. There is no cable or internet but that is stated in the description of the property.
