About the property

2 Bedroom And 2 Bath Across From Beach

Our home is nestled in the quiet, serene forest right across from one of the best surfing beaches in Canada, Cox Bay. It is a quick bicycle ride to Chesterman Beach and a 7 minute drive into town.

West Coast Hideaway is a beautiful two story home that fits in with it's natural setting. Board and Batton cover the outside giving it a "cottage" look. With expansive windows on the main floor as well as skylights, it allows you the feeling of being outdoors while enjoying the comforts of indoors. With hardwood floors, and exposed beams throughout you will not be disappointed.

The Master bedroom is located on the top floor with a queen sized bed and a seating area. Your very own bathroom is also just down the hall for your convenience.

The second bedroom is located on the main floor, also with a queen sized bed, and a full bathroom that looks out into the forest.

A sofa bed (comfortable for two snuggling adults) is located in the main room.

If it is raining outside, get cozy with the propane fireplace and throw blankets. Make yourself some tea and snacks in the beautiful large kitchen, and clean up is a breeze with the dishwasher. The kitchen is a foodie's dream. With high end appliances, lots of counter space, expansive cupboards and a concrete countertop with built in drain board next to our industrial sink, you will feel like a master chef.

A large hot tub is located on the deck to allow you to enjoy the fresh air and stars. Hooks for your towels are located on the house adjacent to the hot tub. A spa like outdoor shower is there for you to rinse prior to a hot tub or after a surf.

If you are wanting some quiet time, nap upstairs in the reading area and enjoy the scenery of old growth trees surrounding you.

About Katrina Bates

My name is Katrina and my husband, Jeremy, and I recently made our dreams come true by buying a house in Tofino. We are both from the Vancouver area, and Tofino has had a special place in our heart for a long time. We got engaged and married up here, are avid surfers, and love Tofino and everything it has to offer.

Katrina Bates purchased this house in 2015

Why Katrina Bates chose Tofino

This property was such a dream and a welcomed surprise. It is perfect. We love the setting, and how it is immersed in nature. It is a 5 min walk to one of the best surfing beaches in Canada, and the house is beautifully built and complements its surroundings. We have amazing neighbours and the property has potential for growth when we want to grow our family.

What makes this house unique

From the larger than life windows, to the exposed beams throughout, to the hardwood floors, this house is beautiful. It allows you the comforts of cozying up by the fire while watching the rain come down amongst the trees, or curling up with a book and feeling like you are in nature. You can stargaze from the comfort of the hot tub surrounded by tall trees, and listen to the waves. We are only a 7 minute drive from downtown, but it is nice to come home and have quiet, and listen to the birds and the beach. Cox bay is a 5 minute walk, so very quick and easy access to the beach, as well as a paved bike path at the driveway that leads all of the way into town. It is close to downtown, but far enough away for rest and relaxation.

Not the Experience We Were Expecting or Hoping For

  • 3 of 5

This house was beautiful and clean and the owners seemed nice. That being said, it was missing some staples and our overall experience was less than ideal. We were there for a short time - 3 nights and 2 days. On our first night there was loud construction noise from one of the adjacent properties until 9 pm, which put a damper on putting our kids to bed and using the hot tub. The heat also wasn't working in one of the bedrooms, and it's pretty chilly in Tofino in March! Lastly, we couldn't find the plastic cups they said they left for hot tub use, the one bundle of firewood they said would be provided, and cleaning items like dish cloths for the kitchen or dishwasher detergent. We spent the next morning texting with the property manager and we organized a time for her to come by with some of these things that were missing. We then noticed that there was no microwave. We reached out to the owner, Katrina, and she said that the microwave broke before our visit and the replacement hadn't arrived yet. We were quite upset by this. If we had known we would have brought our own microwave, or they should have at least left a temporary one until their replacement arrived. We have a baby and a 2 year old and now had no where to conveniently warm their bottles, lunch leftovers, etc. When I texted the property manager she said she wasn't sure what she could do about a missing microwave. She came over later that afternoon and brought several of the missing items as well as a microwave, which was great, but a bit late at this point. The heat in the one bedroom still wasn't working, so she flipped some of the breakers and said that should do the trick. But about an hour after she left she texted and asked us to flip the breakers back because she was mistaken. And the heat still wasn't working in the one bedroom! After a long second night we decided to go home a day early. We've stayed at a lot of VRBOs over the years and this one was a lot of work. A lot of time spent texting the property manager, messaging the owner, and digging through boxes in storage closets to find essential amenities. After we noticed the missing microwave the owner Katrina did apologize for everything and said it was her first time leaving the property for someone else to manage (she herself was out of the country). We understand, but it did make our experience not overly enjoyable. We were expecting more than not having to spend our days on our phone and our nights cold.

Owner's Response: While Danielle was staying at our home, we had a great property manager looking after it. There were instructions clearly laid out who to contact if anything was urgent or they could contact my husband. Danielle contacted me multiple times while I was out of the country at all hours of the night. I tried my best to explain things to her and where things were. Dishcloths, etc were laid out, she just didn’t like what was provided even though I explained why we chose those cloths etc. Upon speaking to me about the heat, I explained what to do and why the heat will not turn on if the house is already at that temperature. We have a propane fireplace that heats the entire house and baseboard heaters in every room. Upon my property manager coming by to drop off some things for Danielle and her family, she noticed the house was sweltering hot. The heater in the upstairs bedroom does work as my husband tested upon their departure. Many efforts were made to make this a very positive stay for Danielle and her family however, she was extremely difficult to deal with, I am speaking personally, and from my property manager and husband who also spoke with her. It would be worth mentioning that they tried to cancel a week ahead of time and I explained that I am sorry I could not refund them as it is very short notice and the reasoning was work was busy etc. She said she understood, however, it does seem that maybe they didn’t want to come and that set the tone for the trip. I did apologize to Danielle for no microwave as it did break right before my departure to Africa, and another one had not yet arrived prior to my departure. Another family stayed prior to Danielle and had no issues with that and used the stove to heat things up, I guess that is just personal preference. I have since taken it off of the listing in VRBO that a microwave is provided and made a special note. We are very sorry that Danielle did not have a pleasant experience at our home, but we did not have a pleasurable experience hosting her either.

Ideal, private, charming home for a Long Beach get-away

  • 5 of 5

Katrina and Jeremy are welcoming hosts and their Tofino hideaway was ideal for our group of five and for introcuding our Swiss friends to this remarkable area. It provided a wonderful, memorable new year's holiday. While a little pricier that we normally go for, it was truly special.

Great Place in Tofino

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Katrina and Jeremy's place for a long weekend and it was perfect. The house was very clean and well decorated. The location is great - near all the great beaches (short walk/jog to Cox Bay) as well as town. We stayed in November when the days are short and nights are long but the place was warm and cozy. Our pup enjoyed snoozing in front of the stove heater. Jessica was around for when we had questions and made us feel completely welcome and at home. Great place and great people! We will be back.
