About the property

Large Secluded Romantic Bungalow, On The Edge Of The Brow With Miles Of Views

New Listing!

Our unique home sits atop the mountain and is built literally on the edge of the undeveloped side of the brow, it is open style with windows throughout both sides and both floors of the entire home, the top floor is a full open loft with 2 separate bedrooms both with their own balconies above the main deck for sipping coffee or a glass of wine while watching the sun set, and both have King beds, one bedroom has its own fireplace and flat screen TV,. True to the open bungalow style the entire house is open air with vaulted wood beam ceilings-but for privacy there are pull curtains to separate individual rooms upstairs. There is one master bath downstairs with shower and tub. There is a great-room downstairs as well with large flat screen TV over the spacious gas fireplace.

There is a large Galley style kitchen with gas stove and large refrigerator and butlers pantry. There are top of the line stainless steel appliances, dishwasher, washer and dryer. The kitchen is fully stocked with everything you will need to cook or entertain. There is a wine refrigerator with controlled temps, ice maker, and dishes/pots and pans etc. We have a spacious front porch with swing, in addition there is a swing on the edge of the brow a short distance through the woods for a romantic stroll. The screened in side porch overlooking the valley has a new 4 person massage therapy hot-tub by Sundance Capri. The back porch sits on the edge of the brow, and runs the entire length of the house. The sun sets in a lake that can be seen several miles away just behind the porch. Sunsets? Good luck finding a better place to watch one as the sky sets itself on fire, watch it from the hot-tub, the balcony or the deck. If you wake up early, watch the fog roll up from the base of the mountain and you will actually think you are sitting in a cloud. We have French Doors opening to the balcony up and down, so feel free to let the breezes flow(as long as you turn off the central heat and air)There is a charcoal grill on the back porch for you to cook your favorite meal with the wine you will be sipping while taking in the view. The great-room is cozy with an oversize couch and chaise lounge built right in, sitting in front of an oversize gas fireplace, with a large mantle, Direct-TV, Large screen flat TV for those that can't miss the Games. DVD Blu-ray and xbox, downstairs, Blu-ray and Direct-TV upstairs. Small TV and dvd in second bedroom upstairs. Great cell service, for data and cell on all networks. Outside- fire pit with cedar chairs and tables, with a natural rock ledge for seating as well for telling of tall tales and short ones. We have a circle gravel drive behind a wooden fence just off of the scenic parkway, so privacy is never an issue, there is no house within half a mile of us. Watch the video, see the pictures, because words cannot do this home justice. Want to ride your bicycle downtown? No problem-its a short ride. Watch the eagles fly? Deer in the front yard? We have it all here at Valhalla. Check out Away From it All 480579 and Fernweh 666662, if this cabin is booked! Beach needs? Sandy Bottoms-vrbo#665401

About Rob Shaffer

Hi! We love Mentone! We have several cabins here that we have built and come as much as we can. We live in Birmingham, and are both in the medical field. As hectic as that is, this place is our place of refuge and refreshing of our minds, relationships and spiritual revival. It is just a magical place. Period. We love sharing our home with respectful people seeking the same rejuvenation. We hope that you will leave better than you came. We always do.

Rob Shaffer purchased this cabin in 2015

Why Rob Shaffer chose Alabama Mountains

We have been coming to Mentone for many years, from Desoto State Park Camping and hiking, to floating the rivers, we can't get enough.

What makes this cabin unique

Spectacular Views, breathtaking sunsets, all the comforts of a home away from home. All so very close to Mentone.

Great relaxing getaway

  • 5 of 5

Really adorable cabin with an amazing view - sunsets cannot be beat. Great secluded location but close to Desoto Falls where we rented a canoe. We also took the scenic road and biked every day we were there - almost no cars and good road conditions. Ventured into Mentone, half day activity at best. Dined at a couple of the restaurants but next time (we will be back!) we decided we'll cook most of our meals and get the shrimp polenta grits and peanut butter pie to go from Wildflower to bring back to the cabin and eat on the porch while watching the sunset. With a glass of wine!

Like the other reviewers mentioned, no bedrooms, one bathroom. I wouldn't bring my young children here with us, but great for our anniversary.

Awesome view, serene, beautifully unique interior; a wonderfully relaxing stay.

  • 4 of 5

This was a weekend getaway for my wife and me, but after the first day, we were wishing we could stay longer. The view is awesome; the surrounding serene. My wife was still discovering the many unique design details of the interior as our stay came to an end. We spent our short stay enjoying nature at a nearby Georgia state park, and browsing the quaint shops of Mentone. The cabin is suitable for a family of four or five; just be prepared to share one bathroom. We would have preferred having wifi, but the cabin does provide satellite tv, a small selection of DVDs, and an Xbox. The hot tub on the screened-in portion of the deck was perfect! We would definitely choose this property again.

One of my favorite places

  • 5 of 5

Glad the drought fires from last summer spared this place. It's very green and lush around now. You can't even tell except for the scorch marks on the base of nearby trees. A couple of hiccups were addressed by the owner/care taker almost immediately upon reporting. Very professional and courteous people to deal with. We had a doe visit us one morning and she stayed around for some time. Hopefully I'll check out some of the other owner's properties one day but for now I'm pretty stuck on this one. Thanks for sharing your place with us!

Peaceful home on top of the world

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I booked this home last minute for my 50th birthday. Overall it was a wonderful location and I'd stay here again for sure. I concur with many of the glowing reviews below, but do have some specific travel suggestions since this is not your average mountain property. These aren't negative comments at all, just informational.

The home is located a little over a mile from the center of tiny (and charming) Mentone. It is squeezed into a small lot on top of Lookout Mountain between Scenic Highway 89 and a rocky overlook. Look at the home from its side and you won't believe they squeezed so much house into this space. While it is close to the road, it's very remote and private - I could count the passing cars on one hand during my 3 day stay.

You can see from the interior photos that this house has unique and quirky decor. It is also designed to be wide open to the breathtaking views from the deck. Some windows don't have curtains at all or the curtains don't fully cover them. Which means in the summer especially, the house is flooded with light very early in the morning. So if you're a sensitive sleeper, bring an eye mask and you'll be fine.

The two bedrooms in the loft have king beds with memory foam (I believe) mattresses and were very comfortable. It was tempting not to get out of bed! But as we were warned about beforehand, there are no doors for the rooms. Instead the rooms are lined up one behind the other and separated by white curtains on rods. Also, the only bathroom is down a steep flight of stairs on the main level, meaning the party in the back bedroom has to walk through the first to use it. So while this place is perfect for couples or close family or friends, anyone craving privacy may want to keep this in mind.

Since the home is so wide open and exposed to the sun, the upstairs got very hot in the summer during the day. We finally discovered the system - there's an exhaust fan you can turn on when the sun goes down and the air cools. This will suck out the hot air and then you can let the ceiling fans do the work. There is no HVAC in the upstairs loft.

For restaurants, I didn't enjoy the Wildflower Cafe as much as others. I would suggest Vintage 1889 (http://www.vintage1889.com/) about 20 minutes down the mountain in Fort Payne. Cool spot!

Trainspotters will love listening to and watching the Fort Payne trains below in the valley. And yes there are very friendly deer around. Enjoy your stay!

Beautiful Views

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at this property! The pictures do not do the home justice. The views are absolutely stunning, and the owner has thought of all the basic needs. The morning we checked out a sweet little deer showed up on the back deck, and stayed for awhile.
