Space 1,000 sq. ft.
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

Fun two bedroom, one bath, 1000 sq ft beach cottage w/ pier & spectacular views!

This is a new listing. SEE VRBO Listing #352993 for reviews of our cottage next door.

The cottage is located on the historic James River with private white sand beach,180 feet of waterfront, kayaks, fishing gear, beach chairs, gas grill, and private pier. On land once owned by John Rolfe, husband of Pocahontas, the cottage has a heated and cooled 38 foot sun porch providing endless views of the river and Jamestown Island. Easy beach access with no steps to get to the beach. There are only two cottages available for vacation rental on the James River with this type of close, level proximity to the beach and river, and we have made both available for vacation rental.

Our cottage is located in a wonderful location to enjoy a beachfront/riverfront escape while being incredibly close to major historic and entertainment sites in every direction including Jamestown, Williamsburg, Yorktown, Busch Gardens, Petersburg, Richmond, Smithfield, Virginia Beach and other locations.

The cottage has been recently renovated to provide top of the line updates and comfortable amenities - all within a 15 minute free ferry ride of Historic Jamestown and Colonial Williamsburg and less than an hour to Historic Old Towne Petersburg - site of the filming of many movies and TV shows including Lincoln, Turn, and Mercy Street.

Our cottage is directly across the river from historic Jamestown Island, a major historic site where the original 1607 fort is under excavation. This is a new listing, so please see listing VRBO 352993 for guest reviews of the owner's other James River cottage.

Our cottage is the perfect get-a-way with a 38 foot long sunporch with three walls of windows to capture views of ships, ferries, tug boats and a menagerie of birds including osprey, eagles, seagulls, cranes, ducks and geese. An occasional dolphin can also be seen if luck is with you. We even provide binoculars for your use.

There are two bedrooms - one with a queen bed and the second with a double size antique maple four poster bed. Each bedroom has reading lamps, an alarm clock, flashlight, terry robes, and luggage rack. Wide open windows provide views of the river or the expansive yard. We provide comfortable mattresses with luxury bed and bath linens, bath toiletries, terry robes, beach towels, bath and kitchen paper products and basic cooking spices.

The sunporch is a favorite hang-out day and night and has a daybed plus chaise lounge for leisurely day time naps or night time sleeping plus a second dining table for dining with a riverfront view. The sun porch day bed (twin bed) is a favorite sleeping spot at night where you can watch the ferry lights gliding back and forth across the river.

Modern design enthusiasts will fall in love with the fully appointed sleek, white IKEA kitchen, original vintage Danish teak furniture, and eye popping fabric throughout the entire cottage. In fact, every single piece of furniture has been recently reupholstered in fabulous vintage inspired designs. Bold color is carried into the bathroom with a European-designed, 50 inch green glass countertop.

We have even extended this mid-century revival through to the lighting. Look up to see funky vintage chrome ball Lightolier track lights that my resourceful daughter found that you will want to take home with you--but please don't! Dine in style with a sputnik, mid-century-inspired chandelier above the Danish teak dining table. From Laurel mushroom lamps in the bedroom to the one-of-a-kind European industrial orange floor lamp in the living room, every light fixture is vintage and chosen with great care to embody the mid-century spirit.

Other high end touches include Waterworks faucet in the kitchen and towel warmer in the bathroom, Hansgrohe bathroom fixtures, Bosch dishwasher, Toto toilet with soft close toilet seat, usb outlets for your electronics, a flat screen TV with DVD player, luxury linens, terry robes, bath toiletries, and basic cooking spices. The central HVAC system provides heat and air conditioning for year round enjoyment.

The kitchen has large windows that look out to both the river and the gardens and offers a built-in oven and microwave, gas cooktop, counter depth refrigerator with ice maker, dishwasher, white granite countertops and small appliances such as a Keurig coffee maker, French Press, coffee grinder, four slot toaster, hand mixer, blender, and crock pot.

Basic cooking spices, oil, vinegar, sugar, tea and coffee are provided as are cooking paper products including plastic wrap, aluminum foil, wax paper, and plastic storage bags. If serious cooking is not on your vacation menu, an endless array of restaurants and take-out deli facilities is available. Information on many "food" and "eating" resources is provided prior to your arrival.

But who wants to stay inside? When you are not sightseeing in Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown, Yorktown, Petersburg, Smithfield, Busch Gardens, or enjoying the 15 minute ferry ride, this cottage comes equipped with a range of outdoor activities -- even if all you want to do is sit on the beach or the pier with a fishing pole and a book. Strolling the water's edge in the early morning searching for shells - with a cup of coffee is a favorite pastime of many guests as is sitting and watching the rhythm of the ferries crossing the river.

Test your skills at finding shark teeth among the shells in the waterline! Included for your enjoyment are two adult size and one child size kayak, life preservers, fishing poles with tackle box basics, water floats, beach towels, sand toys, beach chairs and a weber gas grill. The Weber gas grill on the beach, right outside the sun porch door, provides easy beach-front meal preparation. The 180 foot pier has a great picnic table at one of the end decks over the river for river dining. The sun porch also has a handy beverage frig for easy access to whatever libations suit you.

This is a new listing so please see the guest reviews for our other James River cottage right next door at VRBO 352993. You can expect the same great service, spotless cottage, wonderful amenities and absolutely delightful river front setting.

Come and enjoy!

About Deena Allen

This cottage belonged to my parents who purchased it in 1948. I am fortunate to be its caretaker now along with the cottage next door (vrbo 352993) that was built by my aunt and uncle (literally) from about 1948 to 1950.

Deena Allen purchased this cottage in 1948

Why Deena Allen chose Surry

This cottage was purchased by my parents in 1948 and has been in our family ever since, providing family summertime fun for many years. With modern amenities and fun decor, there is not a better place to spend time on the historic James River. Combine relaxing waterfront living with close proximity to historic sites of Williamsburg, Jamestown, Yorktown, Surry, Smithfield, Petersburg and Richmond.

What makes this cottage unique

One of only five cottages on the James River for short term rental and only one of two (and we have both of them) that are level with the river so all you have to do is walk 10 or 15 feet out your door onto the beach. There is no long flight of steps or high cliff to limit your access to the beach and river. Our cottage combines the best of two vacation worlds: the fun of waterfront living with the fascination of history. Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown, Yorktown, James River Plantations and other historic sites are within a fun 15-30 minute car and/or ferry ride!

Private James River Beach Cottage With Pier Close to Williamsburg
average rating of 5.0 based on 6 reviews

It was perfect! Location, view and owner service was excellent. We all loved it. Thanks

  • 5 of 5

What a lovely lovely place. It was like stepping into a home that the owners had just popped out of.

It was clean, comfortable and well equipped. The bedding and towels were plentiful and of good quality plus thick bath robes - wonderful.

The private pier was a delight constantly inhabited by a variety of sea birds as well as great sunrises and views. Close to the ferry which made trips to Williamsburg etc really easy.

Deena and Linda were great too very helpful and accommodating.

We would definitely recommend this let. Thank you very much

Owner's Response: Dear Wendy and friends, Thank you so much for your kind words about your stay at our beach cottage on the Historic James River in Virginia. We are delighted that you selected our cottage for your visit to America and that you got to see the eclipse in NC. We have many guests from the UK visit this historic area. It is great to hear that you found the location and the 15 minute ferry ride to Jamestown and Williamsburg easy, fun and convenient. Everyone seems to love the private white sand beach, the private pier, the proximity to the river, the kayaks, and the fishing gear is a treat for children and adults. I am glad that you found the fluffy terry robes comfortable. If you or friends travel back to the US, please keep either of our cottages in mind. We would love to see you again. Deena

Beautiful Seclusion yet Proximity to Everything!

  • 5 of 5

This property is well maintained, well stocked, and very clean. The beds and linens are super comfortable. The view is amazing. The fishing gear and kayaks were above and beyond and helped make this trip so memorable for my family. It was wonderful to have a special place to go to without crowds, and yet be so close to any 'touristy' spots we wanted to frequent. We made great family memories here!!! 5 BIG stars!!!

Awesome Host and House

  • 5 of 5

We stayed July 29-Aug 5. Deena is a great host! Answered ALL of our questions. The house is loaded with all of the essentials from q-tips to a salad spinner to beach towels, which is not a very common thing for rentals. Deena even bought a coffeemaker before we arrived because of some questions I was asking about the Keurig (very nice)! The kids swam everyday in the river. There were plenty of catfish to catch, too! The 4 of us stayed comfortably in this house. We would recommend this house to anyone!

Owner's Response: Heather, Thank you for your nice comments about our James River beach cottage. I appreciated your organized approach to your vacation!! I like to get questions ........... then I know you are thinking about the cottage, the trip and the excursions. There are so many places to visit in the area, that only a well planned trip can cover even some of them. We were happy to hear that the children liked swimming and playing in the river. For years and years, children (me, my sister, our friends, our children, etc) have been swimming here, and it is nice to see the experience continue. We hope you will return to either of our beachfront cottages in the future. . Deena

One of our favorite vacation spots!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of five including three teenagers adored this cozy little cottage on the James River, right next to the ferry that takes you across to Jamestown, Yorktown and Colonial Williamsburg. We arrived Sunday afternoon, previewed the historic attractions nearby, bought firewood for the pit out on the private beach, and a few groceries. Thanks to the fully functional kitchen with all of the pots, pans, flatware, utensils and complete variety of cooking equipment just like home, we were able to cook all of our own meals, which was perfect for us because my wife has Celiac disease and it is too risky to dine out. The view of the river from the dining table on the back porch was wonderful. We even made S'mores over the fire pit on the beach to end our first evening, and watched a couple of the classic movies from the owner's collection. On Monday, we tried the three kayaks provided by the owner in the very shallow and calm water near the pier, cooked shish kebabs on the like new Weber gas grill, and went over to Williamsburg for the Ghosts Among Us tour. On Tuesday, we drove the 90 minutes or so to Virginia Beach where we spent hours boogie boarding, bodysurfing and diving through waves. We had a full day at the beach but were back at the cottage in plenty of time to grill steaks, and do some late night fishing off the pier with the rods and tackle provided by the owner, and bait from the convenience store in Surry. I caught (and released) a catfish roughly two hands long, and we spotted dozens of fish leaping right out of the water throughout our stay. Wednesday, we spent touring Jamestown and the Yorktown battlefield, and then we went back to the cottage for some evening kayaking, before having a big meal of various leftovers before doing some initial packing for home. On Thursday we cleared out of the cottage in the morning and spent the day at Colonial Williamsburg, before driving home. One of our best vacations ever! We left rested and refreshed and with a lot of cherished memories. Friends on social media had wonderful things to say about the cottage, the view and all of the amenities from the photos we shared. We would stay here again in a heartbeat!

Much needed retreat on the James River

  • 5 of 5

After the hustle and bustle of Washington DC, a week at this cottage was just what our family was looking for. It was supplied with everything we needed: the kids enjoyed the James River and the kayaks that were available while mom relaxed on the deck, the kitchen was well-appointed for all our meals, and the bathroom was like a spa experience(oh those robes!).

As for location, having the ferry close by was another benefit. We used it almost daily for our trips into Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown. Coming back to the cottage after a long day of touring was like coming home. And to top it all off, Deena and her daughter were full of information on what to do and where to go. They never steered us wrong!

It was a warm week that we stayed but being from Texas the heat didn't phase us. I only wish we lived a little closer so we could visit this cottage more often. Thanks again Deena for pulling those strings back in April that allowed us to stay at your cottage. It was all that we hoped for and everything we needed! All the best, Donna.

Owner's Response: Dear Donna and daughters, It was so nice to have you stay at our cottage on the James River in Virginia. We enjoyed seeing all of you having so much fun in the water and on the beach. We were amply impressed by your organized travel routine, Donna, and your three-week plus history tour around the country. Your girls are delightful. Daphne was happy to hear that you were pleased with her well-designed and well-equipped white IKEA kitchen. She used all design and creative skills at her disposal to include every amenity and storage function that could possibly be incorporated into that relatively small but oh-so-functional space. She did a fabulous design job. While the cottage does not look like it did when we all were younger, the view to the beach and river and the sun porch are similar enough to evoke fond memories from times with my parents and Daphne's grandparents. Daphne's mid century design expertise and sourcing skills made the cottage a delight. Thank you also for leaving the cottage in such nice condition. We look forward to seeing you again. Deena

Perfect holiday retreat!

  • 5 of 5

We are so glad to have found this place for our Christmas trip to Williamsburg! The whole place was sparkling and well laid out, and the view when we walked in and saw the sun porch was just perfect--my cousin actually ended up sleeping on the daybed out there and watching the ferries go by she liked it so much. The beds slept very well: the mattress in the front bedroom (where we slept) was great, and my mother (she was in the back bedroom) swears she's going to buy one for her home! The bathroom also had a huge shower and countertop, which was great so the four of us all had room to put our things. Deena was a wonderful host. She met us at check-in and did a walkthrough to make sure we knew where everything was and was very easy to reach later on when we were after some restaurant recommendations. We also lucked out on the weather, which was warm enough that we could stroll the beach in the afternoon and sit out on the pier. Just a great spot and rental experience -- we look forward to our next visit!
