This cottage at 317 Central is both humble (although it can sleep 10) and strategically located. It is right across the street from the Hoover Auditorium where nightly shows and entertainment are scheduled every summer. It is just 2 streets from the lake, the shuffle board courts and the center of Lakeside Town Center. There are 4 bedrooms upstairs all with double beds and 1 bedroom downstairs with 2 twin beds. All the beds have new pillow top mattresses. To keep cool in the summer every room has a ceiling fan and window a/c both upstairs and downstairs. There is a full bath with shower on the 1st floor and half bath on the second. The kitchen offers a new full size refrigerator, electric range, microwave, toaster, coffee pot as well as lots of cooking / eating ware and plenty of storage space in the pantry. Adding to the "family experience" at this cottage is a dinning room table that can seat 8, a living room that is complete with 2 sofa's, a free WIFI network for all guests including Time Warner cable (200+ channnels) that can be viewed on a 40” HD flat screen TV in the living room and smaller TV’s in upstairs bedrooms.
To make you and your family feel comfortable in this summer cottage home - there are many shelves that are overflowing with children's books, family games and lots of stuffed animals. The back yard includes a large brick patio with a table / umbrella and several sets of chairs and shade under a large hickory tree to escape the hot summer sun at Lakeside. The backyard also contains a fire pit and the shed contains a handicap ramp, charcoal grills, sandbox toys for the beach and other yard games for your family to enjoy.
In the front of this traditional Lakeside cottage you will find a full size open porch with a large awning to keep the sun out, plus comfortable twin rocking chairs and a 2 person seat / swing. There is driveway parking for 1 large car or 2 smaller cars. The theme of this cottage is to provide a home that is comfortable, fun and very accessible (including a handicap ramp in the shed). You can sit on the front porch enjoy the sights and sounds of people, children, bicycles, dogs and golf carts roll by from morning until evening. You can cook a nice family meal and eat at the dining table inside or have a picnic in the shady back yard. With only 1 block to walk you can quickly find Lakeside's Main Street commercial / social scenes, take in some recreation and the scenes at the lakefront park - or you can stay at home and read books, play games or pop in a movie. Whatever you and your family might need, this Lakeside cottage has something to offer everyone during your stay. Bed sizes: 4 Doubles and 2 twins.
As 1 of 5 children for Ray and Bonnie Scheerer I grew up in Lakeside during the summer months of my youth. My Mom and Dad owned a house on 3rd street and we would always go to Lakeside every summer. As a kid I always enjoyed swimming and fishing on the pier, putt / putt golf and playing basketball with other kids on the playground. It was at Lakeside that I first learned how to play shuffle board.
As my childhood years slipped into my teenage years my summer time focus turned to working at various jobs to pay for gas money and insurance for my car and motorcycle and attending football camps and playing travel baseball.
However I always found at least 1 week each year to go to Lakeside with Mom and Dad and enjoy the fun. After I went to college my Mom and Dad sold the 3rd street home and bought the cottage at 317 Central. It was a wonderful upgrade for them as they had both worked so hard all their life as school teacher and Principal. As adult kids we were so happy that Mom and Dad enjoyed their retired time together at Lakeside where Dad loved to sit on the front porch in a rocking chair and watch the many, many people walk by the Hoover Auditorium on their way to the lake or Lakeside Town Center. While Dad was reading (or sleeping) on the front porch Mom would love to bake pies and cookies and make home made meals every day and night for her and Dad and any of the children and their friends who would join them.I began to help Mom and Dad a lot to take care of the Lakeside cottage at 317 Central Avenue. To me this was not just a chore but a chance to pay back my Mom and Dad for all they had done for me and to continue to be involved in Lakeside but now I was the caretaker and maintenance guy. Eventually I became the owner of this cottage and I continue now with the legacy of making sure my wife and our three (3) adult children and now two (2) grandchildren get the same experience that I had at Lakeside.
Larry Schottenstein purchased this cottage in 1990
Centrally located across from the Hoover Auditorium which has nightly entertainment every night during the summer. Just a short walk to the center of town and all the activity on the Lakesfront. A classic older cottage for those who love the feel of something older and classic.
Can sleep up to 10 with 5 bedrooms. A great choice if you are looking for something;
- close to the town center
- across the street from Hoover Auditorium
- a cute cottage for that nostalgic feel
Very old. Carpet, kitchen, bathroom (and a sink and toilet in a closet) not touched in over 40 years. Dirty (not the cleaning crews fault--only so much can be accomplished in a place that outdated). Would never recommend.
I reserved the house in Lakeside to meet my parents and brother and his friend for a long weekend. We were a group of two early 60s, two 25 year olds, two 40 year olds, and a 14 and 11 year old. This looked like a good place for the old folks to hang out while the kids went to Cedar Point. The pics online make the cottage look cute and it advertised 5 bedrooms (enough for our group). Unfortunately, there were many unpleasant surprises upon arrival.
I was warned that there was a parking fee to get into the village. I was not told the amount of the fee; I expected it to be $50ish. My parents arrived first around 3 pm on Friday afternoon and were charged $380. We did not arrive until almost midnight on Friday and were leaving early on Monday morning (before 7 am) and so were able to get in with a fee of $67 for our car (in part because the 11 year old is not charged). This info should be posted on the VRBO ad for the home.
The cottage itself is REALLY warn down. My guess is that the online pics are at least 7 years old. The stove drawer was hanging barely open; all the outlets have extension cords coming out of them to power the appliances, the toilet was slow to flush and needed to be plunged 3 times in the course of our 3 night stay, and the 5 bedrooms were really 3 bedrooms plus a two room "suite" with 2 double beds in it. Luckily, my kids are young enough that we were able to take the suite. Again, this should have been posted on the ad.
All of this was still tolerable, but on Saturday morning, the lights started going out. We called the manager, who sent out a handy man. He advised that the electrical box was over-run from using the 3 AC units. This is a summer house advertised as having window AC and we were told we could no longer use all of them at once. In fact, it was recommended we use none and at most only one. THIS IS IN AUGUST. We turned off the AC for the day, hoping to re charge the system. When we came back from the day at the beach, things were still not recharged and when I tried to prepare dinner, discovered that the stove would not heat up (it is electric). Ultimately, we did not get the electrical system dealt with prior to our departure on Monday. I understand that there is an overhaul needed to the electrical wiring (100 amp service won't cut it) and that couldn't be done in a 2 day window. However, after asking twice for a partial refund, I was given less than 1/2 of the cost of one night's stay. Very disappointing.
Located at the shore of Lake Erie and in view of the western Islands. A short drive to Cedar Point and located in the center of the historic Lakeside Chautauqua community.
