About Larry Schottenstein

As 1 of 5 children for Ray and Bonnie Scheerer I grew up in Lakeside during the summer months of my youth. My Mom and Dad owned a house on 3rd street and we would always go to Lakeside every summer. As a kid I always enjoyed swimming and fishing on the pier, putt / putt golf and playing basketball with other kids on the playground. It was at Lakeside that I first learned how to play shuffle board.

As my childhood years slipped into my teenage years my summer time focus turned to working at various jobs to pay for gas money and insurance for my car and motorcycle and attending football camps and playing travel baseball.

However I always found at least 1 week each year to go to Lakeside with Mom and Dad and enjoy the fun. After I went to college my Mom and Dad sold the 3rd street home and bought the cottage at 317 Central. It was a wonderful upgrade for them as they had both worked so hard all their life as school teacher and Principal. As adult kids we were so happy that Mom and Dad enjoyed their retired time together at Lakeside where Dad loved to sit on the front porch in a rocking chair and watch the many, many people walk by the Hoover Auditorium on their way to the lake or Lakeside Town Center. While Dad was reading (or sleeping) on the front porch Mom would love to bake pies and cookies and make home made meals every day and night for her and Dad and any of the children and their friends who would join them.I began to help Mom and Dad a lot to take care of the Lakeside cottage at 317 Central Avenue. To me this was not just a chore but a chance to pay back my Mom and Dad for all they had done for me and to continue to be involved in Lakeside but now I was the caretaker and maintenance guy. Eventually I became the owner of this cottage and I continue now with the legacy of making sure my wife and our three (3) adult children and now two (2) grandchildren get the same experience that I had at Lakeside.

Larry Schottenstein purchased this cottage in 1990

Encompassed the Lakeside atmosphere...very quaint and great location!

Had a great experience with the owner and the property. The kids loved the proximity to town and shuffleboard, and the adults loved the front porch, the back patio with the fire pit, and the location to Hoover. It served our needs very well, and we would definitely recommend this place to others.

Charming. Good location. Nice porch.

We very pretty satisfied with this cottage. Typical charming Lakeside decor. 3 of 4 bedrooms very small but all with charm. 4th bedroom is a walk thru to the fifth bedroom and therefore not private if you use the 5th bedroom. Nice back yard. Our only disappoint, but a fairly significant one, was overall uncleanliness. Certain areas need deep cleaning and there were definite deficits in cleaning between renters before us and our occupancy.

Very old. Carpet, kitchen, bathroom (and a sink and toilet in a closet) not touched in over 40 years. Dirty (not the cleaning crews fault--only so much can be accomplished in a place that outdated). Would never recommend.

Owner's Response: We have the cottage cleaned by a professional cleaner after each stay. I can only guess that this renter was new to Lakeside and didn't have a proper perspective. In this community there are a large number of older historical cottages with the ambiance of this cottage, which has been in use by the same family for multi generations. They want the cottage to feel like it did when they were children for their own children. There are newer cottages for rent which are significantly more expensive if you are looking for a more updated feel.

Left feeling ripped off

  • 2 of 5

I reserved the house in Lakeside to meet my parents and brother and his friend for a long weekend. We were a group of two early 60s, two 25 year olds, two 40 year olds, and a 14 and 11 year old. This looked like a good place for the old folks to hang out while the kids went to Cedar Point. The pics online make the cottage look cute and it advertised 5 bedrooms (enough for our group). Unfortunately, there were many unpleasant surprises upon arrival.

I was warned that there was a parking fee to get into the village. I was not told the amount of the fee; I expected it to be $50ish. My parents arrived first around 3 pm on Friday afternoon and were charged $380. We did not arrive until almost midnight on Friday and were leaving early on Monday morning (before 7 am) and so were able to get in with a fee of $67 for our car (in part because the 11 year old is not charged). This info should be posted on the VRBO ad for the home.

The cottage itself is REALLY warn down. My guess is that the online pics are at least 7 years old. The stove drawer was hanging barely open; all the outlets have extension cords coming out of them to power the appliances, the toilet was slow to flush and needed to be plunged 3 times in the course of our 3 night stay, and the 5 bedrooms were really 3 bedrooms plus a two room "suite" with 2 double beds in it. Luckily, my kids are young enough that we were able to take the suite. Again, this should have been posted on the ad.

All of this was still tolerable, but on Saturday morning, the lights started going out. We called the manager, who sent out a handy man. He advised that the electrical box was over-run from using the 3 AC units. This is a summer house advertised as having window AC and we were told we could no longer use all of them at once. In fact, it was recommended we use none and at most only one. THIS IS IN AUGUST. We turned off the AC for the day, hoping to re charge the system. When we came back from the day at the beach, things were still not recharged and when I tried to prepare dinner, discovered that the stove would not heat up (it is electric). Ultimately, we did not get the electrical system dealt with prior to our departure on Monday. I understand that there is an overhaul needed to the electrical wiring (100 amp service won't cut it) and that couldn't be done in a 2 day window. However, after asking twice for a partial refund, I was given less than 1/2 of the cost of one night's stay. Very disappointing.

Owner's Response: Update on this as of jan 2017. We were able to identify the source of the electrical problem and it is being completely addressed this spring. The service is being upgraded plus new a/c units are being installed. The older electric box was no longer able to take the load of the a/c units and other demands being put compared to what it was originally designed for. I can sympathize with the renter, it was the first time we experienced and electrical problem, sent over a repair man within 30 minutes of being called and there just wasn't a quick solution. We did comp back rent for the inconvenience and it will be addressed now that the season is over. The home has been a long time cottage for the family and this was the first time they experienced any problems with the electric like this. The electric panel is being updated, downstairs there will be a large 7500 BTU A/C unit and 3 of the 4 bedrooms will have new a/c units. I do refer all renters to the Lakeside web site so they can see what the cost are for gate fees, cars, etc. I can appreciate their not understanding the full extent of these fees. For Lakeside, the fees are what protects the community, makes all the options available for everyone to enjoy and keeps the character of the community intact
