About Sally Garrett

I am an herbalist, naturalist & photographer. I love being in the country near wildlife & stewarding beautiful properties. I've lived in the Texas hill country for 11 years & the wildlife continues to fascinate me. Ravens nest in the cliff wall of the canyon & often fly overhead, croaking their harsh call. My cabins are a prefect artist's or writer's retreat. The deck is surrounded by Little Blue Stem, a native tall prairie grass. And It's important that my guests feel safe, comfortable & relaxed. The kitchen will be stocked with some basic food items.

Sally Garrett purchased this cabin in 2005

Why Sally Garrett chose Tarpley

I've always enjoyed places off the beaten path, connected to nature. While completing a graduate degree in Environmental Studies, I traveled & worked in Africa back in the 90's, studying hippo communication. It was a dream come true to be immersed in Africa like that. Now, 20 years later, this place in the hill country is the closest I've come to being as close to nature as I was in Africa. No, there are no hippos or crocodiles, but there are white-tailed deer, fox, rabbit, coyote, armadillo & sometimes a gazelle can be seen.

Peaceful Getaway in the Hill Country

  • 5 of 5

Even in the Texas summer heat, this place was like Heaven. It is delightfully decorated, and everything you'd need is supplied. We were a bit skeptical of the outdoor shower, but it turned out to be one of our favorite features! It is completely private, and showering in the beautiful setting was not only refreshing, but inspiring. Our hostess was perfect----there to welcome us and show us around, available if we needed her, but never ever intrusive. The property is blissfully secluded, but close enough to restaurants, a little shopping, and lots of awesome hiking, to make it perfect. Be sure to get outside in the evenings! Once the sun dips below the hills, the temperatures quickly become pleasant. The stargazing is unprecedented, all to the soundtrack of crickets and tree frogs. There is no better way to relax and unplug from life!

An Out of the Way Place for a Quiet Weekend

  • 5 of 5

Sally's cabin is located near a small stream about 5 miles west of Tarpley, TX. The owner's house is about 50 yards from it and partially concealed by trees so it is very private. Everything in the cabin shows great attention to detail. Everything that we might have had questions about had very well written and detailed instructions. The outdoor fireplace had wood in it with extra wood stacked nearby. The bed was very comfortable. One thing that was impressive was how well stocked the kitchen was. Everything that we needed to cook simple meals was available. All in all, this was one of the most pleasant cabins we've rented.

Unique

  • 5 of 5

We love finding great distinctive properties to stay in and this one definitely fits the bill. Sally was a great host. This gem was our base for hiking in Lost Maples. Each night we enjoyed a fire on the deck and a shower under the super moon. We had dinner at the Lost Maples Cafe in Utopia and the pie was yummy as promised. The general store is a must. I asked where I could get a cup of coffee and the clerk guided me to the rear of the store where a few of the locals where gathered to tell some "good bull" and to savor the complementary coffee. We also stopped by the food truck park in the morning to get delicious tacos. An afternoon stroll in the Utopia Park was thoroughly enjoyed.

Just what we needed

  • 5 of 5

Me and my wife went to this awesome spot in the canyons for her birthday weekend. It was beautiful and inspiring. We unplugged and did a lot of talking and relaxing. The hike up the side of the hill to the lookout point to see the canyons almost brought my wife to tears. It is a wonderful place to go to to get away from all of the "noise" of a busy life. The drive out there is very calming and beautiful as well. This is a great getaway for anyone but especially couples in my opinion.

We loved the peace and privacy of this unique place.

My husband and I loved spending our anniversary in this beautiful place. The uniqueness of the outdoor shower and the peaceful hammock up in the tree house were two of our favorite things. Everything was so clean and comfortable. We truly enjoyed it and highly recommend it.
