I am an herbalist, naturalist & photographer. I love being in the country near wildlife & stewarding beautiful properties. I've lived in the Texas hill country for 10 years & the wildlife continues to fascinate me. Ravens nest in the cliff wall of the canyon & often fly overhead, croaking their harsh call. My cabins are a prefect artist's or writer's retreat. The deck is surrounded by Little Blue Stem, a native tall prairie grass. And It's important that my guests feel safe, comfortable & relaxed. The kitchen will be stocked with some basic food items.
Sally Garrett purchased this cabin in 2005
I've always enjoyed places off the beaten path, connected to nature. While completing a graduate degree in Environmental Studies, I traveled & worked in Africa back in the 90's, studying hippo communication. It was a dream come true to be immersed in Africa like that. Now, 20 years later, this place in the hill country is the closest I've come to being as close to nature as I was in Africa. No, there are no hippos or crocodiles, but there are white-tailed deer, fox, rabbit, coyote, armadillo & sometimes a gazelle can be seen.
Optional for an additional cost upon request:
guided plant walks
energy-based body work - Reiki, Therapeutic Touch

We love finding great distinctive properties to stay in and this one definitely fits the bill. Sally was a great host. This gem was our base for hiking in Lost Maples. Each night we enjoyed a fire on the deck and a shower under the super moon. We had dinner at the Lost Maples Cafe in Utopia and the pie was yummy as promised. The general store is a must. I asked where I could get a cup of coffee and the clerk guided me to the rear of the store where a few of the locals where gathered to tell some "good bull" and to savor the complementary coffee. We also stopped by the food truck park in the morning to get delicious tacos. An afternoon stroll in the Utopia Park was thoroughly enjoyed.
Me and my wife went to this awesome spot in the canyons for her birthday weekend. It was beautiful and inspiring. We unplugged and did a lot of talking and relaxing. The hike up the side of the hill to the lookout point to see the canyons almost brought my wife to tears. It is a wonderful place to go to to get away from all of the "noise" of a busy life. The drive out there is very calming and beautiful as well. This is a great getaway for anyone but especially couples in my opinion.
My husband and I loved spending our anniversary in this beautiful place. The uniqueness of the outdoor shower and the peaceful hammock up in the tree house were two of our favorite things. Everything was so clean and comfortable. We truly enjoyed it and highly recommend it.
I initially overlooked this property because it appeared to be more along the lines of a romantic, couples getaway...versus the father-son road trip that I needed it for. My usual hill country rental was unavailable (along with pretty much everything else in the area), so it took some VRBO research by my wife to point me towards this property. My father & I didn't want to share a bed unless we absolutely had to, and VRBO noted there was an optional sleeping cot also available - so that pretty much sealed the deal.
As for our experience - in a nutshell - it was great. We found the owner, Sally, to be an extremely thoughtful host. Upon arrival she pointed out some possible issues re the extra sleeping cot and kindly offered us another sleeping option (which was greatly appreciated). The cabin was already stocked with some simple, yet important, items that I wasn't expecting from a rental property (charcoal for grill, lots of firewood, etc). There was plenty of distance between the main residence & rental cabin - which provided the privacy and space to enjoy some music & evening drinks by the outdoor fire pit, without having to worry about disturbing others on the property. It's also worth noting that the both living spaces were very clean and that the A/C kept both spaces nice and cool.
The restroom & shower areas were also good. The toilet was clean and stocked with toiletries, soap, etc. This wasn't my first experience with a composting toilet and the one on this property was far better than what I'd grown to expect (I bring up the toilet for the benefit of potential renters who may factor their own unfamiliarity with composting toilets into their rental decision-making process). I can report that the toilet was used multiple times over 3 days and that no unpleasant odors were detected during our stay. The outdoor shower was also better than expected. The water pressure & hot water on-tap were more than adequate. My first use of the shower was a neat experience - while bathing I heard some faint screeching from overhead, I looked up to see several hawks high in the sky above, calling out to one another...what an unexpected bonus.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. I look forward to bringing my wife here in the future.
The cabin is well-appointed, stocked with most of the necessary cooking tools as well as plenty of tea and coffee, and very comfortable even in the summer heat. The outdoor shower was one of the highlights (two showerheads!), along with the easily-accessible waterfall and creek. The host Sally is very kind and helpful. Note that the road to the property is a bit rough - you could probably make it in a normal car if you take your time, but we were happy that we had a truck. We fell in love with this little place and will surely be back next year!
I had worked a conference in San Antonio and wanted some time in the Hill Country before heading home. My husband joined me and we were looking for a quiet place to spend time together. Sally's place was perfect and better than I expected. Beautiful; creek, swimming hole, water fall, and tree house for nature time. Everything was clean and unique, I spend enough time in hotels and I needed unique and fun. We had everything we needed to cook our own meal followed by a good night of sleep in the comfy bed. If you are looking for an out of the way place, love nature and quiet time this is the place for you.
