About Debbie Hightower

We are an active family of five. We love to get away to our Casa Hawaga as it is a refuge to decompress. We love coming to Taos and experiencing the art, culture and many outdoor activities. There is something for all of us, each time we come - skiing, mountain climbing, painting, shopping, golfing, white water rafting, hot air ballooning, enjoying spas, sharing the area with friends and making memories. Taos also has festivals year round, some truly an experience and not to be missed!

Debbie Hightower purchased this house in 2007

Why Debbie Hightower chose New Mexico

We purchased Casa Hawaga when we were living overseas and wanted a place to call home in the USA. Both, my husband and I love to ski and the Taos ski area has always been very dear to our hearts. We bought it from an artist who had added her artistic flair to the house. We have always enjoyed skiing in the Taos NM area and believe this is a refuge to us and others who come to the area. Being in Taos provides us the opportunity to slow down, enjoy life and take in the culture.

What makes this house unique

From cold country activities to basking in the sun; from cultural entertainment to relaxing with a glass of wine outdoors, Taos has it for us. You can enjoy the beautiful landscape and the arts of the area, in addition to letting your adventurous spirit run free. The drive to Santa Fe is beautiful for a day of shopping, dining and seeing the sights. Taos has a number of great restaurants and a variety of activities. Each season, we try to do different activities, along with doing some of the same outings we never get tired of doing. Ojo Caliente is a great day spa area and the drive is easy and beautiful, the Rio Grande Gorge is not far away and there are a number of restaurants/bars to stop by and taste the local flavors. The art is amazing, from paintings to outdoor pieces to pottery and more. You will be sure to find that special piece and/or more pieces each time you visit. After a fun-filled day, it is nice to relax inside and/or outside Casa Hawaga. We hope it will be a wonderful refuge for you also!

Amazing week with the family

  • 5 of 5

We had a great week at this pretty house. The ski mountain was amazing and close to the house. The house is very cozy and confortable for traveling with family or friends. The view is beautiful, very quiet and peaceful. The kitchen was perfect for big meals since we were a big group. We would like to go back to Taos and this house will definetly be in our list. Thank you Hightower family!

A place that feels like home, not a rental

  • 5 of 5

What a wonderful place! We just returned from a spring break ski trip. We had two families full of teenage girls. The home accommodated our large crowd well. There was even room for some dancing in the kitchen. The view from the large glass windows the first morning took my breath away. The bedrooms had plenty of space. The kitchen is large , state of the art appliances, large pantry. It is a two story home with the bedrooms upstairs. There is a convient water closet downstairs. The beautiful terra Cotta tiles are heated - there is a family room with a piano , intimate lighting and many games to choose from . The decor is peaceful and not overwhelming. There are pictures of family and friends displayed which makes it a more friendly place - a home not a rental. The grounds are spacious as is the patio. It was a wonderful stay. We can't wait to return!

Great Ski Weekend

  • 5 of 5

Had an excellent weekend at Casa Hawaga. The house was even more beautiful than the pictures. It had plenty of room to host my wife and 8 close friends and was a perfect distance between Taos Ski Valley and Taos. Definitely recommend to anyone looking to get away.

Great Ski Trip

  • 5 of 5

This house is great and spacious! Everyone had plenty of room and more! After a day of skiing, we would cook dinner in the beautiful kitchen and eat together in the dining room. We had fun watching movies in the sunken living room and making up dances in the sun room! Such a beautiful place!

Magical Christmas Vacation

  • 5 of 5

We had the most magical Christmas vacation in this amazing home near Taos. Our family lives in Texas and Arizona, and so my family of four, 2 of my sisters and my brother-in-law met up in New Mexico.

The home, if you can believe it, is even better in person that the photographs show. There are breathtaking views courtesy of the 2-story windows. I felt like the house was worth it just for the view.

There was plenty of room to spare!! All bedrooms were extremely comfortable and beautifully appointed. The bunk room was perfect for my two kids and the owner even had a good selection of toys that my daughter played with for hours. We stayed for several days and cooked every single meal in their glorious kitchen. That might sound dramatic, but it was seriously a pleasure to cook in. It had everthing you could possibly need (bring your own spices though).

One of my favorite parts was the woodburning stove near the windows and the fireplace in the sunken living room. A lot of wonderful conversations were had there! The owners also have a great selection of board games and classic DVDs (we enjoyed watching the Princess Bride!). The outdoor patio is also fantastic- we had a good workout session out there with the mountains as a backdrop. When we were there, there was a lot of snow and so we took advantage of the snow toys and the kids had a blast sledding down a little "hill" on the side of the house.

Debbie, the owner, went out of her way to make sure we were comfortable and that all questions or concerns were answered promptly. She is incredibly kind and thoughtful.

After such a fantastic experience, we were sad to leave, but we talked about all of the memories we'd made on the drive back to Texas, and are hopeful we might return in the future.

Worth every penny- would give it 6 stars if I could!!!

Amazing Christmas at Casa Hawaga

  • 5 of 5

Upon arrival the house was in perfect condition. The furniture, floors, kitchen, linens and towels were all freshly cleaned and ready for use. A fresh snow had just covered the spacious back yard, and there was a cord of split wood ready for the fire place or the wood burning stove. The mountain view from the kitchen and dining room is looking out of two stories of large glass windows. There were at least 10 of us staying at the house, and everyone had plenty of room for sleeping, lounging, dining. Driving through the mountains to the Taos Ski Valley is scenic to say the least, and only takes about 15 minutes from the house. The ski valley provides rental services for all of the equipment needed at the base of the mountain, so you never have to transport equipment. Also, there are snowmobiling tours available that start at the base of the ski valley. On Christmas day our whole family took a snowmobiling trip together, and at 13,000 feet I proposed to my beautiful wife in front of everyone. Our stay at Casa Hawage will always be a treasured memory. If you love snow covered mountains, skiing in fresh powder, eating amazing New Mexican cuisine, or shopping for New Mexico style art and jewelry then this is the perfect place for you and your friends or family.

Immerse yourself in the culture. Enjoy the arts, nature and so much more. A great home in which to relax, and you are only miles away from shopping, skiing, white water rafting, golfing, enjoying spas and so much more. A seasonal spot with many festivals throughout the year. The hot springs are free to the public and the Rio Gorge is an amazing site.

Skiers and riders are now able to access Taos Ski Valley's celebrated Kachina Peak via a new chairlift which was successfully installed during the summer of 2014 and summits at 12,450 feet, making it one of the highest chairlifts in North America. The lift increases the mountain’s advanced and expert lift-serviced terrain by 50 percent.

Be sure to experience it yourself this season!
