About Alice Torres Sutton
Hi! Our family has owned this property since 1971. My grandparents built it as their retirement home, and now it belongs to us. My mom, Gladys, is on the left in this photo, and that's me, Alice, on the right. Mom passed away in 2014, but her spirit of hospitality continues. I live up in Tampa, and visit the beach every weekend with my husband and family.
Alice Torres Sutton purchased this Cottage in 1983
Why Alice Torres Sutton chose Holmes Beach
Our family chose to purchase the Cottage because there was no way we could resist! The property is huge, and has the most magnificent view of the beach, especially at sunset, and of course, we loved the neighbors (my grandparents). We live in Tampa, but visit the Island every weekend, and it is a quick trip, about an hour. The Island has an unspoiled small-town charm--like Mayberry but with sand and sun! No matter how short your stay on the Island, it will refresh your spirit.
What makes this Cottage unique
Our cottage offers simple peace and quiet, with sunny or shady spots on the patio facing the beach. The patios are nestled in a native Florida meadow, complete with blanket flowers, railroad vine, and sea oats-- it's a trip to the past, when life was much simpler. When families visit, the patio area is a favorite of the older crowd, since it is shielded from the wind and sun, and it has a horseshoe court. The screened porch is a great place for morning coffee and the newspaper, afternoon snacks, or evening refreshments.

Adorable Beachside Cottage
We loved everything about this cottage especially the ocean front location. Alice was wonderful and made sure we had everything we needed. Will definitely be back!!
Really enjoyed this rustic, cozy cottage with the beach just down the path. No roads to cross. It was quiet and felt private even with the road and beach so close. Just what we needed. The owner is hospitable and easy to contact when needed. Thank you, Alice!
This return trip was just as enjoyable as our first. Well equipped, maintained, and located cottage encourages relaxation and conversation. Looking forward to our next peaceful visit.
So happy that you had a peaceful vacation at our place! It is our specialty, and we love to make our guests happy. Come back soon--
WE WILL BE BACK!
The cottage isn't fancy but yet it was perfect! It was very clean and welcoming.....everything you need for the week is there, including some of the most beautiful sunsets you will ever see! Alice is the absolute sweetest and truly went above and beyond for us. If I HAD to come up with a negative comment I think it would have to be the fact that I was terrified of the 2 little lizards that had taken up residence under the front steps to the cottage. But then again, this is Florida and the two pretty much go hand in hand. By the time we left we had made friends with the li'l darlins and even named both of them. :) Needless to say, we loved our little beach vacation at the cottage and will hopefully be able to come back next year with the family.
I’m so glad you came to stay with us, and sorry the lizards gave you a start! They are totally harmless and fun to watch. Please come back any time to stay.
Wish I could mail the sunset to you-
Close to the Beach, Intimate, and Friendly
We really enjoyed our stay in Cottage (1) from August 16th-19th. The cabin had a rustic feel but was really well appointed and had many amenities. Three gals got together for a reunion and they changed the King size bed for two twins which fit the bill with the sofa bed. Everything was clean, linens were fresh. Beautiful location with lots of flowers and a view of the beach which was about 10 feet out the front door. Parking was great and close at hand. It was really hot but the air conditioning was really nice for a respite from the heat. And we really liked the front porch. I have stayed multiple other places on the island and this was among those which I would return to. It also had everything you needed for the beach. They do have laundry on-site but not in the cottage. Close to Publix. We would highly recommend this place. It was reasonable in price and Alice was so great to work with.
Hi and thank you for taking the time to write a review! We loved having you stay with us and are glad that you chose to share your "gal-time" at our place.
Please come back and stay with us again. it's a little cooler in October!
Lovely return to Old Florida!
The collection of cottages at 'Bamboo' are treasures! We stayed in Cottage 1. Classic Florida...knotty pine interiors with all the modern updates...We were very comfortable and had nothing to ever notify the Management of...which I was only sorry about because Alice was so very welcoming and thoughtful and I would have enjoyed learning more of the family history of the place. There are open spaces and Australian pines..right outside the door....it all makes you feel so peaceful! The growth on the island and the condos squished together are very far away in this special place. Very centrally located too...we were so lucky to experience this spot. We made our own contribution to the cottage...a little tub to wash the sand off your feet before you walk in the door!
Thanks for coming to stay and for such a great review! We loved having you as our guests, and appreciate the little tub-- everyone comments on what a great idea it is. I'm going to get a few more for the other units.
When you come next time, I'll bring over our scrap book and show you the historical photos, including one from 1916 when the island was pretty empty.
Hope to see you again soon- have a great spring!
