From Bethune Beach website: Nestled upon 600 plus acres between the Indian River Lagoon and the Atlantic Ocean, this quiet Volusia County beach community south of New Smyrna Beach features something for everyone. From the no-driving beach with great fishing and surfing, to the family-friendly Mary McLeod Bethune Beach Park, named after the famed African-American educator and founder of Bethune-Cookman College, where you can relax on the beautiful beach, let the kids play at the recently upgraded children’s playground, exercise at the tennis, basketball, and volleyball courts, or fish and crab for your dinner from the riverfront pier while West Indian manatees bask in the nearby lagoon. At the south end of Bethune Beach lies the Apollo Beach entrance to the Canaveral National Seashore’s unspoiled 24 mile barrier island which includes many Timucuan Indian archaeological sites including the highest shell midden in the US, Turtle Mound, a navigational landmark since the early days of Spanish exploration.

I have stayed in numerous VRBO homes around the country and in other countries (Italy and Costa Rica). Until this rental, all of them have been great. I have been coming to New Smyrna Beach for 25 years. We booked based on the description and the photos provided (upstairs unit). What we got was the downstairs unit. The unit downstairs is nothing like the description. No great finishes. No hardwood floors. its really worn and out of the 1980's. There were four roaches, a fridge full of food, clothes, patio furniture for the dining room table, an office chair on the front porch with some attractive duct tape, and several ashtrays, stains on carpet, dirty walls, etc. The place smelled of cigarettes. Stands to reason as there was a carton of cigarettes in the cabinet. The space is very dark and loud with people walking around in the unit above. In our case until 2:00 am. The owner told us that the downstairs unit was finished to the same level as the upstairs. Not so. No refund was offered for these serious downgrade in quality. I asked and was told to pound sand. So just be aware of what you are getting into. It was a horrible place to stay. Another, unrelated issue, is that it is very unsafe to pull out of the driveway. Its very hard to see traffic and traffic is going 45+.
We were in town for 3 nights visiting our son who is in school in Orlando. So we didn't spend much time in NSB or the house.
The unit was very spacious on the inside, and clean. Both bedrooms are spacious, no TV in the master. 5-7 minute walk to the beach, or a short drive to the parking area. Nice deck area for sitting out and enjoying the view or star-gazing. Can't really see the ocean because there are about 3 rows of houses in front. This is on the south end, and there are no restaurants or bars in walking distance. Owner provided easy access to property. The house has two other (separated) living areas so you will most likely encounter others (or hear others) as you come in and out. This wasn't a problem.
The owner called several times on the day of arrival to make sure we had good directions and had what we needed.
