Things to do in the Frederick Area

Nestled in the rolling foothills of the Blue Ridge and Catoctin Mountains you will be less than one hour from Washington, DC and Baltimore, Maryland and minutes from Gettysburg, Antietam and Harper's Ferry. A trip to the big city isn’t necessary for history buffs. Tour the National Museum of Civil War Medicine or the Revolutionary Hessian Barracks, or the grounds of Monocacy National Battlefield. Travel to nearby Antietam, Gettysburg, Harper’s Ferry, or South Mountain Battlefield.

If nature is more your pleasure, hike or bike the trails of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Catoctin Mountain Park or the C&O Canal or take in the waterfalls at Cunningham Falls State Park. A tour of downtown Frederick’s historic architecture, public arts, the Community Bridge and murals makes a great day trip. Frederick has been named one of “America’s Dozen Distinctive Destinations:,” “Great Places in America,” and a “Preserve America” community.

Performing Arts & Music

The city of Frederick is a recognized Maryland Arts and Entertainment District. Take in a play, concert or dance performance at the Weinberg Center for the Arts. Across the street you’ll find a more intimate experience at the Maryland Ensemble Theater featuring a main stage series of original and contemporary plays, comedies improve troupes, and a family theater series. If a dinner theater is more to your liking visit the Way-Off Broadway Dinner Theater.

Lovers of live music will want to visit downtown Frederick after 9 pm on weekends. Shoppers will love boutiques, specialty shops and antique emporiums in downtown Frederick. It’s a short drive to one of the nearby antique meccas, such as New Market, Mt Airy, Middletown, Emmitsburg and Thurmont. Sample Frederick’s nationally acclaimed wines at wine festivals held throughout the year.

Summers in Frederick are magical with wonderful arts events. The Frederick Festival of the Arts features more than 100 artists and dozens of musical offerings. Frederick also boasts a great Summer Concert Series which launches its annual season of weekly Sunday night concerts in beautiful Baker Park. On Thursday mornings in late June, July and August, Summerfest Family Theater features professionally produced children’s entertainment there as well. On Thursday nights the Carroll Creek Amphitheater heats up with the sounds of live music during Alive @ Five for those over 21.

Visual Arts

Frederick offers fine arts venues such as the Delaplaine Visual Arts Education Center featuring diverse art exhibits in an exciting location. Equally engaging are the many privately-owned galleries and shops specializing in original paintings, pottery, jewelry and artistically executed home accessories. The city landscape provides dozens of public art projects where you will find more than 30 murals and sculptures.

If baseball is your favorite pass-time, take in an evening at the Frederick Keys Stadium. The Class A Minor League farm team of the Baltimore Orioles offers fireworks, kids’ activities and a family friendly environment. Enjoy some of Frederick’s top golf courses including Musket Ridge, Maryland National, Whiskey Creek, Links of Gettysburg, Clustered Spires, P.B. Dye, Worthington Manor, Challedon, and many more.

Specialty Shopping

We are close to the historic downtown shopping district where you will find retail entrepreneurs offering hand selected merchandise. One Hundred stores are located on Market, Patrick and East streets specializing in a diverse array of goods including: clothing, gifts, outdoor gear, toys, jewelry, chocolate, skateboards, furniture, fine home accessories, fresh cut flowers, hosiery, stationery, imports and more. Local restaurants also host daily happy hours and many beer or wine dinners, featuring local wine and craft beers. Live music and open mic nights also contribute to a lively nightlife.

Outdoor Activities

Northern Frederick County is home to Catoctin Mountain National Park, Cunningham Falls State Park and Gambrill State Park. Each offers exciting outdoor experiences and breathtaking scenery. Everything we were looking for a weekend getaway with friends!

  • 5 of 5

Quick backstory; I was throwing a surprise party for my boyfriend that included bringing all his friends from PA (we live in DC) to Frederick for the weekend and going on a chartered brewery tour. We decided to go with Deb's house because of the 4 bedrooms and the great reviews. I am so happy to add another review to this list.

First; the house is incredible. We all thought that at one point it used to be an home office because of the layout, but you'd never know. There is a lot of beautiful pieces (Crystal, China, a cabinet full of breakables, etc) but we moved those to the office just in case (I also went for the $59 property damage as a back up - I said there would be brewery tours, and I wasn't taking chances)

Second; My friend arrived first before I did and went nuts about how Deb had set everything up. She laid out snacks and wine, fresh fruit and a (delicious) danish. It was way above what we expected.

Third; Everyone complimented how comfortable the beds were and Deb did not cut corners on those. So thank you for that!

Fourth: I am always nervous about renting houses from the owners because I am worried about them being "helicopter-moms" and checking in on us, or showing up unexpected. Never once did Deb stop by, but anytime I reached out to her she responded within minutes. She was the most welcoming and kind host I've ever stayed with. The house that we rented looks like their guest house and sits right behind their home. It's close, but we never felt "watched over".

Deb thinks of everything.

A never ending amount of towels, soaps, shampoo, the ironing board with starch spray (seriously, right?) washer and dryer tabs, all the kitchen utensils, paper towels, toilet paper, but it's in the office, so you have to hunt for it, but you are literally walking in without having to stop at a grocery store. It was wonderful.

I can't say enough great things about Deb and her house. We had an incredible weekend and I was so lucky to find this rental. Thank you again for everything.

This was my second stay at the Grove House and it was just as perfect this time around. I will be recommending it to all my friends. Beautifully appointed, an easy to get to location, a charming town a few miles away, and a gracious host all make for an ideal visit.

We are delighted to be able to rate the Grove Guest House, an exceptionally lovely property. We stayed there for a girlfriend’s weekend and everything was just as pictured or better.

We were provided the finest amenities. Everything we could possibly have needed was there for us with many luxurious extras that were unexpected treats. It was such a bonus to be welcomed with wine, cheese, fruit, breakfast items and unlimited coffee.

The beds were wonderfully comfortable, the towels were sumptuous and it's clear that the attention to detail and a designer's eye are meant to make guests feel at home. Nothing was left out. It was quiet and private and a much needed respite from our busy schedule.

We were delighted to meet Deb on our final night and upon meeting her were so impressed with her genuine affection for this property and her guests. She was in contact before and during our stay just to make sure we had everything we needed. If you need accommodations in the Frederick area or D.C. (we found it relatively easy to get to the Shady Grove Metro Station), don’t hesitate to rent this remarkable house. It truly is amazing in every way!

Truly Awesome in Every Way!

  • 5 of 5

Six of us stayed at The Grove House for a weekend December 9-11. It was better than we could have expected. First off the location for our needs was perfect. Really easy to find which is nice, but more importantly the privacy is fantastic. Having ample and secure parking was also a huge benefit. We walked in and our draws dropped. Every detail is considered in this home and it shows. I should also note that the television in the pictures has been replaced by one about 3x the size. It was a great place to congregate in the evening, which is what we wanted versus being cooped up in hotel rooms.

The provisions in the home were second to none. We arrived to a bottle of wine, cheese and crackers, cinnamon rolls, bagels, fresh fruit, and orange juice. WHO DOES THAT? Deb does, that's who! Check-in was a breeze as we had the code to enter upon arrival. We had two cars which fit perfectly, and my father had run out of washer fluid on the drive and had popped his hood. Deb stopped by to make sure everything was ok with the home and with our car. We spent the day Saturday at the Army-Navy football game in Baltimore, a 45-minute drive from the home. Deb sent me a text that day checking to see if everything was ok. I told her we were great, and mentioned how cold we were at the football game. We returned to the home that evening at Deb brought hot chocolate for us. Again, WHO DOES THAT? Deb does, that's who!!

If your travels take you to the Frederick area, do not miss the opportunity to stay in this home. It has everything that you need and even stuff you did not think you would. And just when I thought it couldn't be any better, on the drive home I get a text from Deb with a picture of a pair of boots that one of the guys in our party left behind. She is mailing them back to us. WHO DOES THAT? Deb does, that's who! This property is exactly as it is described in the listing and is very clean and very well-maintained. I would highly recommend a stay here.
