A spectacular vacation compound on the rockbound coast of Maine, only an hour's drive from Boston and only a few miles from Portland, Maine and Portsmouth, NH. This subtle but grand shingle-style home, with its entry Porte Cochere, as a nod to the past, and soaring openness within, compels and enlightens while exemplifying today's open and welcoming style of living.
From a high bluff overlooking the bay of Maine and Pint Cove private beach, it is a truly private setting. The three levels of living space invite entertainment on a grand scale and spectacular views.
The entry level offers two complete suites with sleeping for 12 people while the main level has a master suite for 2 and open living spaces. The walkout entertainment level that includes a theater, and gym for exercise and private yoga, leads to the tennis court, gardens and patio for receptions, parties, and dining and to the pathway to the private beach at Pint Cove. The recently renovated pathways, part of the York Cliffs Recreational Preserve at Pint Cove, enhance the beach and ocean experience. The ocean side natural beauty and protected wetlands, home to many Maine species, are all part of this Preserve.
Arriving guests and friends are greeted by a rotunda soaring three stories to a loft studio that seems to magically float in the space above. The interior space pushes the design envelope in dozens of ways and its enduring custom design and finish by local craftsman are sure to inspire and impress.
Full of pleasant surprises and built on the site of the historic, late 19th century Grand Passaconaway Inn, a destination for generations of East Coast vacationers.
My husband, the architect, and I, designed and built
this home as a compound for our growing family. It has served
the family as the gathering place for summers and holidays since its completion.
Nancy Monks purchased this villa in 1995
This home is located on the historic site of the Passaconaway Inn, circa 1890, which was built as a resort for people looking to escape the heat of the cities. It sits on a high bluff overlooking the Gulf of Maine and it's private beach. It was raised around the
time of the Great Depression when, with the advent of the auto, it was no longer viable. The Cottage at Passaconaway represents our desire to be part of history and by restoring the pathway system originally set up by the developers, we now are proud to offer lovely pathways along the private pebble beach.
We designed our home for our growing family with ample space for all, and opportunities to engage in many outdoor activities during the summer months. The open atmosphere of the main living level encourages gathering of people while the deck off the dining room and the screen porch gives us access to the outside grand ocean views. The main level offers a stunning ocean view along with a wood burning fireplace. The bedroom suites on the entry level offer privacy and space.
The master suite opens through french doors to the screen porch and enables us to listen to the sounds of
buoys, foghorns, and the rustling of beach stones as the
ocean rushes across them on every tide.
The other bedrooms all open onto decks and porches for
an enjoyable morning coffee overlooking the pond and
gardens or late afternoon cocktails.
After a round robin of tennis, enjoy your lobster cooked and enjoyed on the bluestone patio. It is the perfect end
to the perfect day along the coast of Maine at the Cottage.
Our family frequently visits the Maine coast and over the past several years we have looked to rent a home to accommodate our group.
The Cottage at Passaconaway features a beautifully appointed home - we met Nancy upon our arrival and she provided a personal tour showing us the expansive living space and the beautiful manicured garden and grounds. The private tennis court was fully utilized and provided a great convenience.
The views from the home/many decks were stunning - we enjoyed our coffee and watched the sun rise several days during our stay. We also had access to a private beach where the kids and adults alike were able to skip rocks in the ocean.
Dealing with Nancy was a true pleasure - her professional approach and availability were first class. As noted above; we are frequent visitors to Maine and Nancy was kind enough to provide some dining recommendations which we tried and enjoyed.
Would highly recommend this property - our experience was terrific.
