What makes this chalet unique

My family has owned property on Emerald Lake since 1960. It's been a great retreat for my six children and grandchildren as well as our friends. Bellingham is minutes away where many activities, shopping and gourmet restaurants add to the wonderful lake setting apart from city life.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you for the wonderful opportunity and beauty that was our Easter away from home (Australia and England). We all had a wonderful time relaxing at your magical chalet and soaking in everything it had to offer. We will always have the memory of BBQs and wine and beer on the deck. Thank you again!

Peaceful getaway

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Chalet! The views were beautiful and watching the fog roll in over the trees and lake incredibly peaceful. The home was cozy and had everything we needed to embrace our weekend of R&R.

Greg, Terri, and Rosetta were all very responsive and helpful in making sure we got settled in okay. We asked about a later check-out and they got back to us quickly and allowed us the later check-out so we could take our time in the morning, which was really nice.

Thanks for opening your home to us; we are grateful!

Owner's Response: Thank you very much for taking the time to review Emerald Lake Chalet. We are so happy that you enjoyed your stay and that we could grant your request for a later check-out. Sometimes there are bookings back to back, so it's not always possible. We appreciate the people who take care of our guests and thank you for letting us know you appreciate them too. Wishing you all the best and hope to see you back again in the future. Sharon (daughter of Rosetta)

Nice, quiet cabin. Remote and difficult to access in winter.

  • 3 of 5

The chalet is located at the bottom of a hill across from a very small lake. We stayed during winter and Bellingham received one of its rare snow falls, which made the scene beautiful but left us stranded for 24 hours when we could not get our vehicle up the hill. Probably the strangest thing about the stay was the lack of contact with the owner. In other VRBO locations, the owner has contacted us to make certain that everything is as expected and in working order. In this case, I left two messages for the owner who never responded (I was able to reach someone else who I think helped as a caretaker of the cabin--mostly to confirm that we did not need to bring laundry detergent, paper products, etc.). When the snow came, I had to find a shovel to clear the many steps up to the cabin, and my wife located some salt. Not a big deal for us (we're in our fifties) but not a responsibility older guests should have to deal with. It would be a fun place for kids in the summer (there is a canoe and paddle boat) but whatever the season I think the owner probably should show a little more interest.

Owner's Response: Hello John Thank you for responding with your comments. All were welcome. We do go out of our way to make your stay as enjoyable as possible. The weather both in Bellingham and B C was very extreme over the holidays.. Here in Abbotsford, it was ice, snow and high winds... My daughter, Sharon does a great job of seeing that the guests arrive to a cozy and clean retreat. Greg, a few blocks from the lake and Terri are persons who would help in Bellingham. Their phone numbers were sent to you prior to your arrival. Please let me know if this was not done. Thank you again for taking the time to reach out. Rosetta

Great retreat for the family

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in early October with our two young children. It was a miserable day the first day, but we were cozy in our cabin on the lake. The fire was nice and the kept the whole place VERY toasty. We enjoyed playing cribbage, yahtzee, drinking hot chocolate and watching movies while we watched the rain come down. The kids loved all of the 'hiding' spots in the loft area and the views were stunning. We were lucky the next day as the weather cleared. We went to nearby Whatcom Lake trail system (5 min drive away) and enjoyed a stunning walk as a family. We came back in the afternoon and enjoyed fishing off the dock (no luck) and toodling around on the canoe and kayaks. It is a peaceful, serene lake and we thoroughly enjoyed it. We even saw a great blue heron fishing on the banks. The proximity to the city is awesome; we didn't feel like cooking on the second night, so we just ordered some take out and we only had a 10 min drive to pick it up. A couple was renting the suite underneath us, but we couldn't hear them at all. We did have to share the kayaks, but we worked out the timing and it was no big deal. I don't know how busy it gets in the summer, but we were the only people on the lake most of the time. I would highly recommend!

Place was very clean and had everything we needed (wood and tools, cookware, towels, blankets, etc). We booked very last minute, but the communication was prompt.

Great weekend, even without perfect weather

  • 5 of 5

It was a bit cold and damp, but there were stacks of firewood and we cooked and admired the views. So much birdsong, it felt like Hawaii. Spotted a bald eagle when we arrived and spent a lazy weekend watching more intrepid types fishing and boating. Next time we come hopefully we will have better weather and can enjoy the outdoors, but it is no show-stopper.

Note, there are quite a few stairs to get to the chalet. The view is worth it, but those stairs are probably not for everyone.

This would be a great place for kids too.

very nice

the house was very nice and we all enjoyed the lake and kayaks. It was sunny and we had so much fun on the lake and taking walks and runs and also had a nice fire down by the lake. I will be back.

Quiet get away.

  • 4 of 5

The chalet was perfect for our family get together. The view was lovely, and it was very quiet yet close to town. Our only complaint would be that we had to purchase firewood. The description said the firewood was provided. When we arrived, which was very late due to a very delayed flight, there were only 3 large pieces of wood. There was no way to build a fire with it. Being it was Jan. The chalet was chilly. We looked for a wood pile and did not find any, and had to purchase wood at the store. If the description had stated that we were responsible for getting wood we could have bought it on the way in.

Other wise it was very lovely and would stay there again.

Owner's Response: Hello and Happy New Year: I'm very sorry the chalet was cold when you arrived and the wood that was there was too large to start a fire. There was additional wood in the lower front storage. Since we had a new staff person that weekend I apologize for not having the chalet cozy and warm when you arrived. Sincerely Rosetta
