Historic Cabin Newly Renovated With Modern Amenities Sleeps 6 Adults

Enjoy your own rustic cabin close to the Shenandoah National Park and the towns of Washington and Sperryville. We are now taking bookings for the autumn and holiday seasons of 2017. Longer term rentals are welcome. Contact us to find out more.

A historic cabin in Washington, VA completely renovated and updated in 2015 to provide a retreat on the edge of the Shenandoah National Park (a trailhead allowing Park access is about 100 meters away). Less than two hours from Washington, DC, this house combines rustic charm in a 19th century hand-hewn log cabin with modern comforts, including a newly constructed great room and outdoor porch with panoramic views of woods and pond.

Our cabin is about equidistant to Washington and Sperryville (about 5 miles in each direction). It provides a great location to enjoy activities as simple as a walk in the woods, or as elaborate as a special dinner at The Inn at Little Washington. There are other restaurants and pubs in nearby Flint Hill, Sperryville, and Washington. Local communities, breweries, wineries, and farms have activities all year round. Or just relax in a tranquil environment.

The house consists of one master bedroom with a double bed, and a very large fully enclosed loft with a restored fireplace facade that sleeps four. The cabin has a sitting room with a working wood stove. There is a bathroom with large shower and underfloor heating, and another half bath. The great room is the centerpiece of the new renovation, with 18 foot vaulted ceilings and views of the woods and the pond on three sides. It is wrapped by an outdoor covered porch. A full kitchen with gas range, dishwasher, refrigerator and ample counter space invites cooking indoors, or grill outside on the porch. A washer and dryer are available.

This house is very unique and with new renovations is ready to host your special visits to the country. We have tried to include many amenities for your comfort and ours, although the cabin is best appreciated as a retreat from city life. And as beautiful as this space is, please note that an old cabin in the woods may not be for everyone. There is ample space for children and young adults to enjoy themselves and connect with nature. There is much wildlife, including deer, wild turkey, birds, bear and venomous and non-venomous reptiles, that visit the property and can be viewed from the house, or encountered up close. Please be prepared, and take special caution when exploring our frog-filled pond, and to supervise young children in this area. We have internet access via wifi (although high-speed access is limited by the ISP) and mobile phone use is available at the cabin only if your carrier allows coverage via wifi.

Why Heidi Dodd chose Washington

We love old properties and challenges. This neglected log cabin needed our love and...well, come to see if we have risen to the task. The local community is great and the peaceful environment promised a world away, while still allowing us to be close to DC.

What makes this cabin unique

The hand-hewn cabin is a century and half old. This old house allows you to appreciate the craftsmanship, durability, and practicality of rural 19th century construction. It is like walking back in time, while our renovations give the house a modern twist without infringing upon the original structure. We've added modern amenities, like heating, cooling, and internet. The area is full of interesting farms, cultural and outdoor activities, wine tours and more. Make sure you spend time outside during the full moon to appreciate the woods in a new way, or watch the stars on any clear night in an area with very little unnatural light blocking your view.

Wow

What a great place! The cabin was so cool and interesting that we didn't want to leave it. Perfect for a secluded vacation but close enough to the great restaurants, wineries, distilleries, and markets of the area to make things really fun. Recommended if you want to get the kids off of their phones for a bit.

A wilderness gem

  • 5 of 5

Our group of girlfriends stayed at this cabin in February and enjoyed every minute of our stay. We had lots of lounging around time, dinner in town, visits to vineyards, star gazing, and hiking. The cabin feels so homey, comfy and modern all at once. The house information made it easy for us to find nearly everything we needed to know (including safety), and local information made it easy for us to visit nearby businesses and restaurants.

Absolutely wonderful

  • 5 of 5

I love this cabin near Washington, Va. I stayed there in the fall while the leaves were turning and everything was just gorgeous. It is a beautiful place, inside and out. Loving detail went into all the decor and comfort of this getaway. I didn't want to leave. The cabin feels secluded and tucked in the mountain but it's a quick drive to town and there are multiple hiking trails all over the area. The cabin has a beautiful new addition with all the amenities you could want and a charming log section that is cozy and warm. I would recommend this to anyone and will certainly stay there when I return to Virginia , which I do several times a year.

Comfortable Cabin

  • 5 of 5

The cabin is a perfect combination of comfort and charm. All of the modern amenities are available in the new addition, and the authentic log home with a fireplace allows for quiet, cozy evenings. The setting is like a nature preserve or park with views of woods all around, and friendly visitors, such as deer, turkeys, and bears, abound. Be sure to watch for hummingbirds buzzing about, and listen for frogs in the pond. Desmond is a dream host; he is helpful and attentive. We would return in a minute!

Great for fall weekend escape

  • 5 of 5

We spent a November weekend at the Dodd's Washington, VA cabin. Great place for a fall weekend escape. The cabin is completely renovated, while retaining it's old feel and charm. And the new addition, basically a great room with bathroom and utility room, is soaring and light filled. Everything is new and all worked fine. Kitchen is well equipped with everything you need (except a microwave, if you need that); and some basic essentials like spices and cooking oil are there for you as well; not the usual stripped out rental house.

We hiked up a trail just down the road which led up to Shenandoah National Park, with glorious views and beautiful foliage. Lots of other hiking options around with a short car ride as well. The cabin is almost up at the peak of the road, where Gid Brown Hollow road turns into Harris Hollow road, and is the start of the Rush River running down into Washington and the Rapahannock. Beautiful countryside. The cabin is close to the road, as with most old houses, but there was only an occasional car so it's all very remote and tranquil. Good setup for a family with one double bedroom in the log cabin and a sleeping loft with 4 beds upstairs.
