Lübeck is famous for its passageways and courtyards. It is the remains of the medieval town planning. Behind the gable end street stores were in the Middle Ages, the so-called "shacks" erected. There were small, two-storey building, each having only one room on each floor of their ground plan. In these stalls workers, day laborers and carriers of the trade, which was exercised in front Straßenhaus lived.
To reach the corridors and courtyards are usually more or less through a narrow passage. In the corridors there are narrow streets, where are right and left small to tiny houses. The yards wide on the other hand usually around a small square, usually with a tree.
At the end of the 17th century. Century there were more than 180 courses in Lübeck and courtyards. Today, there are still about 90, representing an urban rarity, which has not contributed negligibly to appointment of Lübeck's Old Town a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1987.
The hallways and courtyards wear distinctive name, for example, Dark Green Gang, Brand Weinbrenner Gang, Five Bude transition, Käselausgang or Glockengiesser Hof. Our house is in sable gear and takes its name from a mason who built several buildings in this transition in 1803. The history of this transition is much older and can be traced to the 1307 trace.
Whereas previously the aisle and courtyard houses were only the "poor people" reserved, these houses are now restored most loving and represent desirable residential quarters for people who like to live in the city and love a very special social "habitat" as it only can be found in the corridors and courtyards.
High demands on space and high ceilings one may however not have. Even our house is 20 m² floor space rather tiny and therefore offers sufficient for a maximum of four adults. Therefore, it is with its open beams and brick walls very cozy and atmospheric. Because it is fully restored and modernized, it offers a high comfort despite its age.
