About Helen Alspaugh
Larry & I are both native Miamians who have drifted southwards towards Homestead. This area is more like the place we grew up. We have a grown daughter (27) who lives in Newark, RI, whom we love to visit. We are a couple of avid adventures who love traveling and seeing new lands. We've been all around the world but of course, there's no place like home!
Helen Alspaugh purchased this Apartment in 2003
Why Helen Alspaugh chose Homestead
We feel like we live in Paradise, especially when the rest of the country is shivering. There is an acre of land beside ours with palm trees in the view, so sunsets are amazing. We love to sit in the yard watching the show in the sky in the evenings. If it's cool enough, a campfire completes the evening. With enough yard for our 2 little dogs to run in and enough trees for shading, we love the wide open feel of the south facing houses. Most of the trees were planted by us after moving in. Hurricane Andrew destroyed all the trees on this peaceful acre. In the spring the poincianas bloom bright red and in the summer, mangos and avocados are plentiful. Slowly but surely, it has turned into the garden atmosphere we envisioned when moving to the property. Our street is quiet and safe, away from the main traffic flow. This was a big change from the city life and traffic we were used to. But it's a great change!
What makes this Apartment unique
You will fall in love with the quiet area, roosters and birds singing in the morning, away from city traffic and surrounded by green. The apartment is a separate cozy 1 bedroom with full kitchen, and full windows with a view to the south and the east. Open the windows and let the cool breezes come in. We love dogs and your well behaved pets are welcome to come play with our small and friendly dogs. Don't worry- we keep the yard free of doggie gifts on a daily basis!

The accommodations and host hospitality were above our expectations, and I couldn't think of a single negative if I tried. The house was clean and well stocked, and Helen and Larry were available when we needed them - but gave us our privacy when we didn't. Superb hosts that I will definitely book with again when we visit this area. (They are also Herper friendly, and located half way between the Main Gate of the Park and the Tamiami Trail - making it a convenient spot to rest after late night cruising. Private entry allowed for us to enjoy late nights, while not disturbing them at all as well). I definitely will recommend this to friends and colleagues.
Very quiet and relaxing.
We really enjoyed the big quiet lot of the rental. There was everything there for recreation ( beach chairs, towels and bicycles with all the safety gear) and patio chairs and BBQ. Also a fire pit. Everything for outdoor life. The cottage itself was well equipped and cozy.
Great affordable location for southern FL fun!
Thanks so much for having a piece of "Paradise" available to rent. It was a great size for the 2 of us, so peaceful and quiet. We enjoyed exploring the area; Coral Castle and Fruit and Spice Park were among favorites. Also took a drive up to Coral Gables for a tour of the Biltmore Hotel, and so much more. Thanks again!
Charming, Location, and Serenity.
If you want a place away from the hustle and bustle of the Miami and Ft. Lauderdale area this is the place for you. The cottage is charming with all of the comforts of home. Larry and Helen were fantastic host and have immense knowledge and information on the all the sites to visit. They provided bagels and juice for our first morning along with other snacks including an endless supply of filtered bottled water. The are located in plant nursery district where it is quiet and their yard is a paradise of tropical gardens and orchards. Their cottage is a great jumping off location to the Everglades, the Keys and the beaches on the east coast. Thank you Larry and Helen for making our stay a wonderful experience.
IF you get the chance to stay here-take it!! It’s an amazing place. Larry & Helen are awesome; the house is perfect and being in an agricultural area makes it’s so quite and peaceful. We loved our stay here and everything about it.
Excellent stay. Our hosts were wonderful and gave great recommendations of local places to visit.
The house was great. Perfect for a quick getaway to either Miami or the Keys. Larry and Hellen were incredibly friendly and helpful offering tips and recommendations for the area. Tropical gardens and orchards surround the property with a winery close by. We highly recommend this booking for a quiet, relaxing getaway!
