Stan and Pam Hegener purchased this house in 2014

The property is exquisite. There are not enough adjectives to describe the beauty. It's timeless.

We stayed for 30 days. The weather was fabulous. There were deer, hawks, hummingbirds, swallows, horses, and maybe a skunk. Views of the mountains and hay fields from every window. I lost my husband in the house a few times. The kitchens were equipped with everything needed, included a good supply of spices. We enjoyed Dave's daily visits and Elizabeth checking in to be sure we wanted for nothing. The leather furniture was more comfortable than ours at home! The location to Gunnison, Crested Butte, and hiking locations was perfect. The stars were incredible at night. You could easily fall asleep outside listening to the wind in the aspens. There was a cattle drive down the road our first week. How awesome is that? Met a few of the neighbors on our nightly walks. If we had brought our horses, we would still be there! Thanks for a great month and for letting us stay in such a beautiful location to escape the Arizona heat.

In 7 years of leasing a property for vacation, this was THE BEST!

  • 5 of 5

The property manager, sweet Elizabeth, was a dream! She met us and showed us around the property and kept in touch with us throughout our stay. The place was amazing! The older cabin was perfectly decorated in period pieces, yet all the comforts of home. The newer part of the cabin was so very well built and attention to detail was amazing. JOB well done.

Just a hop, skip, and a jump west of the cabin we were on BLM land riding trails on our ranger all day. It was fantastic.

THANK YOU THANK YOU

Great location, well appointed and comfortable home for any adventure.

  • 5 of 5

The Wiley Spur Ranch is a perfect location to access every adventure in the Gunnison-Crested Butte area. The house is a combination of a restored miners cabin and a large addition. It is decorated beautifully in a western theme and very comfortable. The views from inside looking outside are spectacular. If you love cooking and gathering outside, this is the perfect place. The large firepit area and cooking shed made our evenings very enjoyable. Grilling outside and roasting marshmallows were our nightly activities. The stars in the sky were breathtaking. Coyotes howling in the distance could be heard. Activities close by included white water rafting, fly fishing, horseback riding, hiking and shopping in Gunnison and Crested Butte areas. We attended the oldest rodeo during Cattlemens Days in Gunnison, (117 years) and were not disappointed. This is the perfect house for those who love to play outdoors but also love coming home to a beautiful and comfortable home.

One for the books!

Sink into some real deliciousness at Wiley Spur Ranch. We sure did. We hope to return. Watch "Buck" in the mornings...he'll ease along the rail then buck -kick his way 3X to the fence corner then canter a bit. He'll repeat his routine at least 3 more rounds in the ring while he takes in the mountains off in the distance. He's a sweet-natured buckskin and always a gentleman. There's a nice walk up the dirt road and 360* of scenic views in a special place near Ohio Creek that we can assure is no disappointment. The home is spacious, comfortable, spotlessly clean and quiet, with smartly appointed decor, furnishings and appliances...anything you need is there in and in well-organized manner. Wiley was a wonderful respite away from the week of activities surrounding our son's strong college finish and commencement ceremony at WSCU. (Phew!!! "He done it!!!" We are grateful). We are light-traveling global middle-aged adventurists and outdoor enthusiasts who appreciate properties well-maintained. Stan called immediately upon our initial inquiry to answer any questions we might have and promptly responded with all our concerns. Elizabeth greeted us upon arrival and gave us a quick and efficient orientation around the home. She was helpful with any questions and was a delightful hostess. We picked the perfect place for our family to relax and get together for our son's special day. my2cents

best yet

  • 5 of 5

My family has been going to Colorado once a year for over 25 years. This is the best cabin we have stayed in yet.

When we first arrived, we all spent the first hour going from room to room in awe.

It's just a remarkable property.

If you are traveling with a family or group of friends, look no farther. It doesn't disappoint. You will feel comfortable here

Wonderful property

  • 5 of 5

This is a unique and well thought out property. To give you an idea of the layout, the "old cabin" is one side of the structure and the "new cabin" is on the other side, connected by the dog trot dining area. Out back is the cook shack and fire pit, out front is a huge parking area and pastures with several horses, including a nice buckskin mare that my 11 year old daughter loved. The old cabin is unbelievably cool. Perfectly restored, it is like a comfortable museum. A very private set up for one couple, worked great for my parents with our family on the new side. I honestly spent a couple hours wandering around it and kept discovering new details, just a wonderful spot in this world. The new cabin is very well done also, big views, with 2 bedrooms both with baths down and a loft that is maybe the nicest room in the house. There are 4 private patio/decks, each with a different view and sun/shade time. The cook shack and firepit are equally wonderful, a great spot for evening pre-dinner cocktails! The entire property is remarkably great. We have stayed in VRBOs throughout Colorado and the country and this is one of the very best. Elizabeth, the caretaker, met us and went through the entire property, her husband helped restore the old cabin. Her enthusiasm for Gunnison and the cabin was infectious. The only (very minor) complaints: The new cabin bedrooms and baths are small and one doesn't have a closet; no shampoo/conditioner provided (every VRBO at this price point provides, but not a big deal); no kindling for the fire pit.

Things to do in the area if you want to see it but maybe have people that can't hike/float/bike: Float/Dine at Garlic Mikes (we had age ranges from 75 to 9 and it was a huge hit...take a cooler with your favorite can drinks, very mild float and short walk to a nice dinner); drive Ohio Creek road to Kebler pass and stop for the Castle Rocks view at the rock slide, easy drive and beautiful views and aspen forest; drive/hike/fish Cement Creek road near Crested Butte, light 4WD recommended, but not bad and really beautiful small creek....just keep going!

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your comments, we really appreciate them and are glad you enjoyed your visit. There is a lot of history in the miners cabin! We appreciate your comment about the shampoo and conditioner, we provided the bars of soap but figured most folks like their own shampoo and conditioner and may not have a use for ours. We can certainly provide some in the Laundry room for those that don't mind a generic brand. Also there are old cedar shingles tucked back behind the wood pile under the aspen, we usually break them up into starter wood, as they light with a match. Maybe they did get used, I will have Dave check this week. I know the horses seem to love the attention from all the guests. Thanks again, hope to see you back! Sincerely, Stan and Pam
