Thanksgiving Stay

  • 5 of 5

I can't remember when an owner went so far out of their way to make things right, and better than right. When we decided to rent over the Thanksgiving holiday, I wanted to make sure that the kitchen could accommodate the cooking of a large turkey. When we arrived, we found that the owner had also supplied us with a large turkey platter, carving set, special meat thermometer and extra cooking utensils. Unfortunately, as sometimes happens even in our own homes, the furnace had died. The owner went above and beyond the call of duty and did everything in his power to get the furnace back on line as soon as possible. In addition, he showed up with fresh hot Starbucks coffee in the morning, and then made a special trip to the store get a tea strainer for my non-coffee-drinking spouse. The furnace was repaired in short order and everything went fine for the rest of the stay. Couldn't ask for better.

Owner's Response: Thanks for acknowledging that our place is nice and comfy. We have actually never had anyone complain about our floors being sqeeeky in almost 3 years of renting to guests. Usually when someone takes a sideswipe like this, it means that they were not happy with their stay and they need to divert attention from what is really going on. Perhaps his Thanksgiving plans were not successful and he needed to blame our lovingly restored vintage oak flooring. Suffice it to say that our floors are not overly noisy and this is not a real issue. We brought them a wonderful bouquet of flowers and a poinsettia, but he did not mention that.

Comfortable cottage with vintage touches

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed staying at Cutie's Boulder. It isn't too far from anything, but is probably best for someone with a car. There are a selection of restaurants, shops, and grocery stores within a couple miles. The house has a very comfortable living room, so it's a great place to relax at the end of a day of exploring Portland. The kitchen is small, but very functional. I especially appreciated having some spices and cooking oil supplied so that I only needed to shop for major ingredients to cook at home. The beds have pillow top mattresses. Linens and towels were all nice. In short, it was a really comfortable, homey space. It also retained some original features like the built in medicine cabinet in the bathroom and it had some vintage pieces in the bedrooms. I would definitely stay there again.

Clean character home in a wonderful location.

  • 4 of 5

We loved our stay at Cutie's Boulder in the Alberta Arts area of Portland. The house is within walking distance of many great restaurants and shops, and although 15th Avenue is busy, it quietens down at night. The house itself is small and old, but that was fine for a couple, and everything was very clean. Since I have allergies, I appreciated our hosts' cooperation in using unscented laundry products prior to our stay.

We had a car, so making day trips was easy. However, I would warn future guests to use the driveway for parking as our car was hit overnight when it sat on the street, and the culprit did not leave a note.

This was our first visit to Portland, and we had a marvellous time!

Comfortable House Within a Half Mile of Everything

  • 4 of 5

By far, the best thing about Cutie's Boulder is its location. There are MANY restaurants, bars, grocery, and drug stores within 1/2 mile walk. Definitely try P's and Q's for sandwiches and salads. So good!

The house itself is a little small, but there was plenty of room for our party of 4 adults. It was clean and tidy as well. I saw a couple of ants in the kitchen during our stay, but nothing to get too excited about. I just made sure to wipe the counters after preparing food and they didn't really bother us.

We didn't have much interaction with the owners, but I did talk to Alf a couple of times on the phone and he was pleasant and helpful. I would definitely recommend this rental for a small group!

Unfortunate Events

  • 2 of 5

We are in a dispute with the owners concerning our renting the home. We are in contact with VRBO, and one of the things we were asked to do is write a review. In one of the emails from the owner to us, she said details aren’t important. I don’t agree with her concerning our dispute, but I agree as I write this review. I’d sum up the dispute as miscommunication and missed timing. For those reasons, the owners cancelled are reservation before we had the opportunity to solve the problem. We were so looking forward to staying there because of the great reviews, and the nice things that were said about the owners. You could tell that they care about their guests. We had family that was going to join us, who are now sick and won’t be coming to OR, and because we live in a different state, we were hoping it would be our go to rental. The home looks to be about a mile from where our daughter lives. I give it a one star because of the dispute. I give it another star because I think we would have been very happy staying there. I’m sorry that we couldn’t work things out with the owners.

Owner's Response: These people were given the opportunity to pay for the extra person they wanted to bring. They changed the contract at the last minute. They informed us after we gave them the opportunity to work it out with VRBO, that they would not be staying. They left us with a one week hole in our calendar, for which we still have not been paid. Now, for some amazing reason I cannot comprehend, VRBO has allowed them to review us, even though they did not stay at our place. If you read our reviews, you will see that we are fair and deliver a great place to stay. We don't like it when people try to take advantage and chisel on paying us a fair rate. They knew that we allowed no more than 4 guests and yet waited till the end to inform us that they were bringing a fifth guest, thinking that we would relent because of the late date. We told them we would allow the fifth guest, but that they would have to pay extra for that person. They were inflexible, not us.

About Alfred & Eileen Delia

I am a licensed plumber/professional musician from New York and I have lived in Portland, Oregon from 1978 to 1995 and subsequently from 2003 to the present. My wife and I met October 1st, 2014 and we were married Oct. 1st, 2015. We are enjoying the romance of a lifetime!

Cutie's Boulder is our most fun project and we enjoy constantly improving the amenities there. Eileen is a former ballerina/home restoration entrepreneur and our experience is informed by that and my musical compositions/performances. She has introduced me to the Paleo diet and I have lost weight besides other medical benefits because of it. Sometimes we do plumbing jobs together, and we are happy to get along so well.

If you stay with us at Cutie's Boulder, we will be very attentive if not downright doting, to provide you with a great experience. We believe in caring for others as we would ourselves and that everyone is important. Live long and prosper!
