Elegant Cottage on 600 Acre Horse & Cattle Farm

Bedrooms 3
Space 1,200 sq. ft.
Property type cottage

About the property

Horses Surround You. Beautifully Renovated Cottage On 600 Acre Farm.

Wolftrap Farm now features seven vacation rental homes, with the conversion of this 1940's era tenant cottage. Built as on-site housing for a "milker" when the farm was a dairy, this cottage is classic. Our 2015 renovation added a second bath and a screened porch for outdoor dining, with views of three adjoining horse paddocks. Guests have access to our fish-filled ponds, endless woodland trails, a "play barn" with pool, ping-pong, Foosball, corn-hole, etc. Great for young families (bring the dog), girls' getaways, multiple generations, wine touring, visits to Monticello, Montpelier and UVA. (NOTE: vrbo & homeaway classify the Milker's Cottage as 3 bedrooms because of the sleeper sofa in the living room. It in fact has only two proper bedrooms, plus the sleeper sofa in the living room.)

The Milker's Cottage is far from the sounds of traffic, but only a mile off U.S. Highway 15, making for easy excursions for sightseeing and shopping. We are halfway between Gordonsville and Orange, so you have your choice of quaint village or County Seat, each less than 5 miles away. Each has abundant restaurants, quaint shops, museums and all modern amenities.

The drive to Monticello through Keswick and Shadwell is one of the most scenic drives in America. Montpelier is just 15 minutes away, directly across the mountains you see from the front of the farm.

Barboursville, Horton, Keswick and Honna Lee Wineries are all within 20 minutes drive, and Early Mountain is 30 minutes away.

Other Drive Times: Charlottesville (25 minutes); Culpeper (30 minutes); Monticello (35 minutes); Gordonsville or Orange (5 minutes); Montpelier (15 minutes); Richmond (60 minutes); D.C. (100 miles)

But why leave the farm? There is endless hiking on the farm, all the fish you can catch, fire-pit in the back yard (firewood supplied), horses to watch and pet, plenty of peace and quiet, and room for the kids (and the dog) to run.

About Keith Cuthrell

I am the nut flying through the air in the picture, with most of my family in the background. My wife and I have bought and renovated many run-down properties over the years, not the least of which was Wolftrap Farm. We live in Virginia Beach, where I still practice law a little. The farm is a labor of love, and you will see why when you visit. It is glorious to have stewardship of this "little piece of heaven", as so many of our guests have characterized it.

Keith Cuthrell purchased this cottage in 2003

Why Keith Cuthrell chose Gordonsville

In 2003, I was looking for 5 acres and a cabin in the mountains, and I overshot. The farm was a wreck, but the landscape was magnificent. The Charlottesville area is just wonderful.

What makes this cottage unique

The land itself, with the rolling hills, vast pastures, views of the mountains, hardwood forests, vast scale, streams and ponds, and proximity to modern amenities, is what sold us on this farm. Then we discovered that several of the houses and barns pre-dated the Civil War. It has been pure fun to renovate each of the houses and furnish them for our guests.

Great time in the country

  • 5 of 5

This cottage was just as nice as it looked in the pictures. We had everything we needed, even some coffee and filters for the first morning! Katie was very pleasant. We stayed with our two sons who loved the horses and the games in the play barn. Eat at Fabio's if you get a chance, the food was excellent. Monticello was a dream. Lovely vacation, we will be returning

Serene views and beautiful horses

  • 5 of 5

We stayed 2 nights in the cottage after staying in DC for 5 nights. It was such a nice break! We wish we had booked a third night, as we spent a full day out and about at Monticello and felt we could have used a whole day just at the farm to relax and explore. Our kids (6, 5 and 2) completely fell in love with the horses that surround the cottage on 3 sides. The cottage was clean and comfortable. Booking with Keith was easy. We would definitely go back to the farm on a future trip. Enjoy!

We stayed over Valentine's Day weekend and we couldn't of asked for a better stay. We brought our two dogs who always travel with us. The owners were very accomadating. Very good location, about 20 minutes from Charlottesville and about an hour outside the Shenandoah national park. The night we stayed it ended up snowing about 5 inches and when we woke up it was to a winter wonderland. The fresh coating of snow over the farm was one of the most beautiful sights! Our dogs had a blast playing in the endless fields! Will definitely stay again and highly recommended!

Perfect Girl's Night Away!

  • 5 of 5

I cannot begin to say how impressed I am with this house. There were seven women staying overnight and I was initially a bit apprehensive about the amount of space for so many but let me tell you, there was plenty! The sofa couch was actually very comfortable (no weird bar in your back!!) which is not something you will find often. The kitchen seemed to have everything that was needed although we did not cook at all. There was plenty of floor space in the main area to set up an air mattress if you need one (you'll need to bring it). We did not get a chance to explore any other part of the property as we were only there one night, but the horses are right next to the house and it made for nice ambiance. Every single one of my friends said that this is a place they would come for a family getaway with their kids. I think one of the most surprising things I encountered was no list of things to do for checkout. I have stayed in many vacation rentals where the list of things you need to do before checkout was a mile long (sweep, take out the trash, strip beds, etc.) and this place is like a hotel! You just get to pack up and leave. What a little treat! Overall I don't think I could've asked for a better place!

A beautiful and relaxing family getaway

  • 5 of 5

We booked the Milkers Cottage for a 4-day post-Christmas family getaway and it was just what we were hoping for. First, Katie was great with communication and coordinating our arrival and making sure we had everything we needed while we were there. The Wolftrap Farm itself is lovely, surrounded by low rolling hills and forested countryside with horses and cattle all around. Quiet and peaceful. The cottage was perfect. Clean, bright, spacious, comfortable, fully equipped. The side porch is big with great views of the surrounding scenery. The horses are literally right next to the cottage and every day we'd feed them carrots and apples. The "play barn" was great for our family as we could play ping pong, darts, pool and foosball. We were also able to use their fishing gear at the pond. We were also able to bring our dog (which saved us kennel fees) and we could go for long walks along the main farm road and some of the roads adjacent to the property (Recommendation: Bring boots or old sneakers if the forecast calls for rain. The main farm road can get pretty muddy). It's located only a couple of miles outside Gordonsville so we could easily run into town for groceries, coffee, gas, etc. (make sure to go the BBQ Exchange for lunch or dinner. It's excellent). It's also only about 30 minutes from Charlottesville so great for day trips to Monticello or UVA. Other close daytrips include Montpelier (Madison) and Ash Lawn-Highland (Monroe). In short it was perfect for a relaxing getaway in a quiet, pretty setting. Would highly recommend for families or couples. And it's less than a 2-hour drive from the DC area.

Beautiful cottage and scenery, very peaceful

  • 5 of 5

We booked the Mikers cottage during our wine tour with Albemarle limousine. When you drive on to the property at Wolf trap farm you instantly feel relaxed. We fell in love with the Milkers Cottage right away. The furnishings in the house were exceptional and very confortable. Everything in the house was top notch. The porch out back had beautiful scenery with horses roaming around in the field. The horses come right up to the fence where you can pet them. Overall I give this house 5 stars. We will definitely stay here again!!
