great cottage close to downtown

  • 4 of 5

Very comfortable cottage a short walk to the heart on Helena. Clean, well appointed, and comfortable. EXCELLENT LOCATION!

Internet works poor and AC is sub par.

The owner was helpful and kind.

I would stay here again.

Not for Cooks + Locked in the Bathroom

  • 3 of 5

I stayed at this property for a week in June of 2017.

Pros:

* Convenient yet quiet location in the oldest part of historic Helena.

* Comfortably appointed overall.

* Washer and dryer combo worked well.

Cons:

* Since this is a self-catering accommodation, I was surprised and disappointed by the poor quality of the cookware. The few pots and pans provided were very cheap, old and beaten-up -- like rejects from a 1985 garage sale. It was a struggle to cook bacon and eggs with them, let alone anything more complicated. There wasn't even a kettle to boil water for instant coffee or tea. Considering that a new set of serviceable cookware can be had for about $200 at Costco, this is kind of inexcusable.

Also, there needs to be a modern toaster that can toast modern bread. The vintage toaster provided was retro-cute, but I had to cut about 3/4" off my bread slices to fit them in.

The range is electric and is not vented.

* The latch on the bathroom door failed and trapped my friend inside. I was staying by myself, so I never bothered closing the bathroom door. When my friends (a couple) visited, she closed the door and was unable to unlatch it from the inside. Nor could her husband and I from the other side. The handle just spun around. We were finally able to use a table knife to pry the latchbolt back far enough to open the door. I tried to figure out what was wrong with the latch, but couldn't. If I had closed the door when I was there by myself, I supposed I would have had to kick the door open to get out.

* The shower is large, but the heavy caulking around the pan is cracked and unsightly. It seems that water must be going down under the pan. The hot water is SCALDING hot; the temp should probably be turned down for safety.

* Every liquid product provided (hand soap, dish soap, body wash, laundry detergent) were all of the heavily-scented variety. This may not bother some people, but I had to go out and purchase unscented laundry detergent. Luckily, I brought my own unscented shampoo and body soap with me.

Great Helena Homebase

  • 4 of 5

This little cottage is in an awesome location, a short walk to downtown or to the Waterline Trailhead. There's an awesome and extensive trail system so close, and a great map in the cottage for planning hikes. The house is older, but has charm for days with cute decorations. It was very clean and comfortable with relaxing outdoor space and a nice yard. You are close to neighbors, but it's still a quiet area. I highly recommend staying here!

Charming and historic cottage

  • 4 of 5

This cottage like many of the mining era cottages is backed against a slope, and is just out of the historic commercial district -- in fact, an easy walk to the satisfying Mediterranean Restaurant and the equally good cafe/bakery next door (which opens at 7 am weekdays.). The cottage was freshly painted and clean, but the appliances including bath were well worn (and the dishwasher (which we had no occasion to miss) was on the fritz.

The owner was friendly and helpful. Recommend smartphone to navigate, as the streets change names and meander a bit.
