About Vickie Isom

My siblings and I grew up in Harper, attended the same school as our father (who is now the owner of the Kaiser Haus along with our mother). At that time we had K-12 all under the same roof with just steps to separate the elementary and junior high. We grew up 2 blocks from this home and have many childhood memories. My sister, brother, parents, cousins, Aunts and Uncle's still live in Harper. They continue to have many ties to the Harper community. My sister, dad and I have worked many hours getting this home ready to share with others. The blessing is we have created many new memories. I live in the nearby town of Kerrville married my firefighter husband 30+ years ago. I have a career in the Salon industry. Thank you sis, dad and husband Jeff for a great journey.

Vickie Isom purchased this house in 1952

Why Vickie Isom chose Harper

This 1938 lovely rock home was purchased by my Grandparents Chester and Anita Tatsch in 1952 from William and Theresa Kaiser who were the original owners. Prior to this home there was a 2 story house on this site which was where the first Catholic Church Services were held. The front steps that lead up to the house were once part of a post office in San Antonio. The current laundry room was my grandfather's smokehouse. Not to worry not a hint of smoke can you smell. The meat was stored here through the winter months. It was also a storage area for the canned goods from the gardens and fruit trees. The current grill area was my grandmothers laundry area. She had an electric washer that agitated the clothes however we had to put the clothes through a ringer into a tub of rinse water and back through the ringer. Summer or winter this is where the laundry took place. The corner area is where the water was heated for laundry, baths, cleaning and making lye soap it still remains in this space. My sister and I have fond memories of helping my grandmother with the wash. This space is also where our family made sausage. My grandfather still has his recipe on the wall. Watching the parades from the front porch was a treat and is one of many childhood memories of this home. My father inherited this home from his parents and we feel blessed that this home has remained in our family. My parents decided to update it and list it as a vacation rental. I love going home to our quite community.

What makes this house unique

Harper offers something very unique. A safe, quite place where you can walk to our community park, visit the local Pioneer Memorial Museum, or library, grocery store, the antique store across the street, the Longhorn Cafe, that has been around since I can remember. Wanting to listen to live music check out the our local Headwaters Saloon. Harper also has a number of community churches. The great thing about this house is it's charm, location, and history. It's less than 30 minutes from wine tours, shopping, restaurant's and museum's in the nearby towns of Kerrville and Fredericksburg.

A Great, Historic and Out of the Way House

  • 4 of 5

This house, in Harper, TX is about a 20 minute drive outside of Fredericksburg. Don't let that scare you off. I'll explain later. One of the owners greeted us and showed us the ropes of the land and gave us a tour. The place is very much like home. The 3 bedrooms are suitable for couples or families. The King bed was very comfortable, and my kids slept like babies in the twins. The elder didn't want to sleep alone in the queen in the third bedroom. Each room has it's own private entrance, due to it being the old fire house. The bathroom was more than sufficient with stocked towels. The kitchen has everything you need, including a bottle of wine! The patio is great, where we played cards and looked at the stars.

Now, about the drive. It is probably one of Texas' most scenic stretches of highway. You roll through ranches, scenic vistas, and if you time it right, you are literally "ridin' off into the sunset"! Although the wife scoffed at having to go an extra 20 miles, by the end, she said she enjoyed the rides.

Sweet little house

  • 5 of 5

Three guys riding Harleys touring the hill country in the heat. The air condition was very much appreciated. The house had everything we needed or wanted. It is on our list for a return visit.

Great house, great location and great owners!

  • 5 of 5

This house was perfect for our group. Close to Fredericksburg and the area that we want to ride our motorcycles. It is clean, has a great porch and bbq for grilling. Connie, the owner was great in getting us checked in and giving us the outline of the house and the town. You can't go wrong with this town or house or host.

Great place to get away!

  • 5 of 5

We loved staying at this quaint house out in the country! The owner's rep was very friendly and got us settled in upon arrival. The house was clean and the beds very comfortable. We would definitely stay here again. The only complaint is that the owner had used moth bolls in the house, but once you got used to that smell, everything was great.

Owner's Response: I appreciate your review and apologize for the smell. However we don’t have any in the house or under the house. When remodeling they were used to get rid of skunks under the house. I guess we don’t notice it when cleaning. Hopefully it won’t deter future guest. Maybe we can use something to have a pleasant aroma. Thanks for letting us know. Vickie and Connie.

Loved this 1938 home! Super Clean and very comfortable. We were visiting family, and staying here was perfect! Connie and her family are lovely people, who made sure we were happy and had everything we needed. The home is well stocked with comfortable beds, linens, blankets, and lots of pillows. The kitchen has everything needed to make meals at home. Connie stayed in contact to make sure we were all happy! Thank you again, and we will definitely be back!
